So these Portuguese silvers arrived today. Not my usual kind of thing buy by my criteria I have to collect them (any world coin containing silver, from 1800 onwards, designated as circulating commemorative or standard circulation on numista).

These coins were clearly not designated for circulation and have never been spent or used other than by collectors for collecting. There are also loads more I need to get too.

Thinking of changing my criteria as I don't really have an interest in collecting modern commem coins (aka tat). Any suggestions appreciated.

Some of them are quite pretty so I've shared those. :) 😕

    2003 Silver Proof 1oz $1 Kangaroo - "Jirrah-Watty"

Featuring a design by acclaimed Aboriginal artist Ray Thomas of the Gunnai people in Gippsland, Victoria, the coin depicts "Jirrah-Watty" – the Big Kangaroo – in full flight. With bold muscular line-work underscoring the animal’s power and predominance, a delicate finish applied to the background envelopes the horizon in a shimmering heat haze, along with the distant silhouettes of another stalwart of the outback, the grass tree. Ray Thomas spent many years researching his Gunnai people’s myths, legends, designs and body marks. The patterned line-work and motifs are characteristic of the indigenous peoples throughout South-East Australia.

The corresponding "frostie" has a raised polished image with frosted background and was crafted by Vladimir Gottwald, Engraver at the Royal Australian Mint

This proof kangaroo is, in my opinion, the clear number one of the entire Skippy collection. A truly and outstandingly beautiful coin - I hope it goes some way towards mitigation regarding my previous post.

What about the Rolf 'Pedo' Harris one they brought out, do you have that in your collection :P

I do like the one above in 'aboriginal' style.

  3. This is my recent pickup, an Australian 1943 dated Sixpence, minted from .925 silver at the Denver mint in the USA, featuring King George VI on the obverse and the Australian coat of arms of a kangaroo and emu.
Australia minted all their silver coins from the high grade of .925 until 1946 when it dropped to .500, silver still being used until 1963 when they stopped using the UK £ and went to the AUS $, the high grade of silver might account why its hard to find unworn coins from the pre 1945 era with them being quite soft.
Three mints manufactured these coins every year from 1938 to 1945, these were, Melbourne in Australia (no mint mark), Denver in the USA (D mint mark) and San Francisco in the USA (S mint mark).
The production figures for the two (Australia didn't make any this year) mints in 1943 alone were,

    1943 D,  8,000,000
    1943 S,  4,000,000

Had quite a busy morning... :) and a few interesting bits

THE nicest toned Morgan I've ever seen- I bought this to sell but fell in love with it! The camera makes it look terrible but this has the nicest natural rainbow toning.

What I presume is a trench art engraved 3d young head victoria. This has such amazing detail and never seen one quite like it! If anyone has any informaiton on it including the likely story behind it, values etc I'd love to hear it as apart from the hobo nickels in the states, I've never really seen engraved coins with this much detail.

A nice selection of world silver including Philippines (50c and 10c) when it was a US territory, a relavitvely hard to find Lithuanian 5 litai, Swedish 2 Kr and Polish 2 Zloty as well as some Aussia, Barber dimes, old 6 pence and other bits :)

Yeah I been 'fighting with the light' trying to get decent pictures showing lustre on coins, nothing seems as good as the human eye though.

2010 RAM 1oz Silver BU Kangaroo at Sunset

My collection of all twelve 1oz silver Proof and BU Sunset and Outback Kangaroos is completed with this flawless argentine example, the details adroitly captured in some of his finest work by photographic aficionado @CadmiumGreen.

I am still enthralled by the timeless beauty and simplicity of the design by engraver Wojciech Pietranik, whose monogram can be seen above the Fabulous 15 Privy mark.

Few more for the folder. Love the Fiji coins although they're only .500 and the Australian crown is a serious bit of silver to circulate in 1937!

    Only 3 coins this time

1960 Belgian 50 francs wedding of king Boudewijn and Fabiola de Mora y Aragon.

Soviet union 1 Ruble 1924 and another 100.000 Lei from Romania

Well if you ONLY going to have three coins they might as well be superb, historic, interesting and beautiful ones.
