Today I Received.....

Message added by ChrisSilver

The Today I received section is for private individuals to share items they have purchased for their collection / as part of their investment.

The Today I received section is not to be used for businesses to promote their business. Trade members and those operating as a business in the eyes of the forum are invited to enquire about a Dealer Sub Forum, where you may start your own Today _____ received topic to post your commercial purchases. E.g. The Today Chards Received..... topic.

@BackyardBullion i have a question. when you make these bars do you have a mould where you pour a load at a time? or do you have painstakingly have to pour each one individually?

If its a trade secret - no need to answer I was intrigued  how you manage to knock out so many!

One at a time, in a single mould, yes. I pour them by eye as well, so some end up being under 100g and therefore unusable and others end up over about 106g which is where I pop them back in for remelting as that's just a little too much free silver to give away 😉

All told, to pour 175 good looking bars with the right weight range it takes about 250 bars poured I recon, maybe more. I don't keep count 😉

Wow I admire your tenacity in doing so!  Good effort mate. It must get frustrating at times but the practice must keep you in shape!

Just received a 1872 young head shield sovereign, a very interesting one!

There's something on the Queen Victoria's face and it looks like an acne.... might be a mint error.

Also an error message 'invalid cert number' showed when I tried to verify the coin by reading the NFC tag in the PCGS slab. I have inspected the coin under a microscope and pretty sure it's genuine. Already contacted PCGS and waiting for their reply.

Thank you for your reply.

The grade is AU58.

Yes I realized the two marks on the bun.... Do you think they are just dent marks or mint error?

That looks like a nice coin, it would also have been good to see a photo of the reverse.

Raised pimples are often a warning sign to look closer for fakes, but this coin looks beyond doubt.

It could possibly be a small air bubble just below the surface.

I can't see the marks on the bun, but I don't think it relevant to try to call them mint errors. These sovereigns were mass produced for circulation, and nobody should expect perfection. As we all know, even modern proof coins don't always achieve perfection, despite claims by the Royal Mint in particular to produce coins to the very highest quality (or words to that effect).

Did you notice what appears to be a small crack or scratch running around the top left of the head? I would be taking a longer, closer, look at it, but in a positive way, because it is one of many interesting features which can sometimes be seen on Victoria shield sovereigns, and other coins from that period.
