Today I received - some distinguished Charles I (1625- 49) coins-  

          - Five Shillings & Sixpence- 

References as per the coin tickets.

Totally awesome arrivals today... a coin I have desired to own for a couple of years now. A dream coin in fact. An Athenian owl tetradrachm dating to 440-404BC, over 2400 years old! Absolutely exquisite! Amazing relief. 

 

And for a geometry geek this is unbelievably cool. A first millennium 10 dirhem polyhedral weight, I believe used to check against coins. They come in many shapes... I see a new collection in my future....

There was a large hoard of owl tetradrachms found in 2018, which drove prices quite dramatically downwards. They were made in the millions or at least hundreds of thousands, being recognised at the time by people over a vast area of Europe, Africa and Asia, and are still common today, even in good grades like this one, but still valuable and I feel now is still an excellent opportunity to buy one. Maybe a wise investment in that sense but that wasn't my motivation to have one. There is something about the quality of the art and workmanship, that was just astonishing for its time and continues to be. For me there's not much that comes close to it. Some might look at it and say it appears rudimentary, crude, childish even, but I'd say this work is a result of the both the artistic style of its age - the Greeks made astonishing art that has never been surpassed - and the practical  purpose of a trade token that was respected and recognised across Athen's large dominion so had to be mass produced! To have acheived both in the owl tetradrachm is incredible to me. 

There is also something very beautiful in the symbolism in the design.

I just love the history of Greece and Ancient Rome. It’s the cornerstone of so much that we take for granted now and in some ways we’ve progressed and in some ways stepped backwards. 
 

I have a little Socrates bronze bust in my office at home to keep me company, a memento mori skull painting and an Aurelius coin on a bracelet.  The Owl of Minerva would be a decent addition.

Finally got the final pieces to my Black Panther puzzle! As some of you may know I’m a Black Panther fan and I couldn’t decide whether to grade my collection or keep them raw so…I got two of each and did both! The one(s) that evaded me was the 2012 Marvel Civil War coin which is very expensive to obtain in PF70 and very difficult to find raw however my patience paid off and bought them from a guy who wanted to get rid of them as they were a present from his ex 😂😂😂

These will go away and be passed onto my kids and kept in the family.

Always got to give a shoutout to @StBeesSilver for my awesome handmade Black Panther masks. If you want one or anything else like this give him a shout 🫡

Managed to nab the full and half in recent separate auctions. Chuffed as there were no 1977’s minted by RM so figured IOM was as close as I’d get for this year 👍🏼

Today i received a superb win from @CoinsOfTheRealmAuctions. A gold 4 coin 1997 Britannia set. Every coin is in tip top, clean condition just as if they came from the mint today. All excellent candidates for grading but that's something I have to think about. Pairs perfectly with my silver set so keeping up my matching gold and silver collecting habit lol. It also breaks me in to my first 1oz gold coin so I'm chuffed it's such a great one.

I was too slow to the draw on these ones, by the time I had made sure the Mrs wouldn't walk in on me making a purchase they were all gone, nice bar and a great price at the moment if I remember rightly
