So I got a few books about coins - the Marsh sovereigns book, and the Schlumberger European Gold Coins book, and now, to go with them, Allen's Standard Guide to Grading British Coins.  This is quite interesting as it goes through all of the standard obverse portraits and reverses of British coinage, and has examples of the designs at various levels of wear with specific pointers about what wears quickly.  It was quite informative right off the bat, as one could look at known designs in various states with some discussion of the wearing process.  Literally took about 10 minutes for the penny to drop, as it were.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

I see what you did there.

The latest edition of Marsh gets a tonne of bad reviews because of inaccuracies.  Is it still worth it?  It's not exactly cheap, as books go.  Especially books that periodically get replaced.

I've not seen any of the older editions, but as I understand the main claim to fame of this one is that it has half, £2 and £5 sovs consolidated into it (did you know they make £5 sovs?).  The new edition was expanded by a chap called Steve Hill.  Can't say much about about the inaccuracies, really, as I don't have any other coherent body to compare it to.

On the plus side, it has pretty decent photographs, which is a win, as the photos in the Schlumberger book are typical late 20th century screened bromide tech and fairly potato quality.  They're also rather better than the Allen grading book in my previous little missive.

As to whether it's worth getting, if you've got your heart set on a £5 sov it might be worth the outlay, but if you've got a previous edition there may or may not be a lot extra to recommend it, as most interesting sovs are largely historical in nature anyway.
