These Archangel Michael coins are pretty hard to come by. Still can't believe I was able to get the 1 oz gold 2018 (1500 minted) straight from the Ukrainian National Bank.

These are beautiful coins, being Ukrainian, it is a special coin to me. Despite the 20 years I have lived in Canada, it is still where my soul belongs. After the war is over, I am getting as many of those as I can and sharing it with the SF members that want to get one. Thank you for your support UK, it is thanks to you in many regards that we keep on fighting.

The sov got a PF64 Cameo and the half sov a PF63 - I knew they had a few minor things but these grades feel harsh. The only positive is they did better than the silver part of the set which again just underlines the inconsistency with 1911 proof sets being graded. The 1850 sovereign I was too scared to grade as I thought a scratch on it would make it a details grade got a AU58 so not all a disappointment.

I saw this Sovereign when you posted it several weeks ago, presumably when you first acquired it raw, and I thought it was an Ultra Cameo example all day long.  Don’t be disappointed with the grade, It’s a fantastic Sovereign, I think NGC has been extremely harsh.

To be honest, it could have been far worse but PF64 cam was the lowest grade I expected it could get. Was expecting 65 or maybe 66 with an outside chance of the UC on it. The grades on the 8 silver coins from the same set are shocking to be honest, nearly all PF62 (6 out the 8 ) but in-hand I’d expected a 64-66 on them. If I get chance, I’ll compare 3 different 1911 sets and I’ll be honest the inconsistency in grading to me is plain to see. I am no grader but on most coins I’m not far off but 1911 proofs make no sense (to me).

edit: I have added the photos from NGC which never done a coin just and the half is showing a few marks and I’ve seen many like that have a cameo attribution so I suspect it was close. The sovereign does have a small blemish near St George’s head which can be the only explanation as to the eye it’s a very nice example and under a loupe has minimal hairlines and marks.

I agree with what you say, I think there is something about the 1911 year date that sets it apart in terms of grade predictability as opposed to other year dates- your Silver coins from the same set at 62’s is alarming, there’s usually some uniformity between the coins within a set.

Importantly your Sovereign got a Cameo designation- I would always prefer the Cameo rather than a higher numerical grade, but I acknowledge a higher number coupled with a Cameo designation would be preferable.

I think I was extremely fortunate with my 1911 Sovereign at PF64 UC, there’s only 9 designated UC including mine below- but I would say your Sovereign looks comparable to mine- my Half achieved a PF64* the Reverse clearly let it down.

Totally agree with everything you say, having the cam is the most important part and with it being on the sovereign it means the value is still with the chased coin in the set. Your examples are absolutely beautiful by the way, fantastic examples. I would love to sit down with the NGC graders to understand what they are looking at when grading and what they are not likening about the 1911 coins. Their is something about this set they consistently don’t like but sometimes grade any absolute shocking example a 65 - 67 especially with the silvers. I know the 1902 mattes also have this issue but at least I can put that down to the matte finish.

I think for the money we pay to grade older coins, NGC should exemplify/ justify the decision in writing- a sentence or a paragraph would be sufficient.

My take on the graders decision making, is them knowing the grades that were achieved on the preceding graded coins for a particular year date- and slotting the grade in accordingly- the 1902’s appear to be particularly difficult for them to assess.
