Today I Received.....

Message added by ChrisSilver

The Today I received section is for private individuals to share items they have purchased for their collection / as part of their investment.

The Today I received section is not to be used for businesses to promote their business. Trade members and those operating as a business in the eyes of the forum are invited to enquire about a Dealer Sub Forum, where you may start your own Today _____ received topic to post your commercial purchases. E.g. The Today Chards Received..... topic.

Received today, another for the Cabinet, this time an 1845 Victoria Crown.  Quite obviously cleaned at some point but nevertheless, some nice detail can be seen, the Cinquefoil stops and the Wyon inscription 😃
A couple of gaps made ready in the Cabinet tray for nice examples of an 1821 George IV Secundo and the 1893 Victoria when funds permit.

You can start to see which Rabbit hole I have gone down here 🙄

It's a very nice rabbit hole to go down Richard. You are putting together a lovely set there.

Is a great coin. But in such great condition, i'm always afraid of counterfeits. Not really counterfeits, but illegal restrikes, as they are made of the same material. I can't find a really good articel in english, but this explains it better than me, with my elementare school type of english.

They made a lot of them. They did them so good, german experts have really problems to recognize them. Most "experts" won't.

Need to buy then from the right places as with any coin, plus i have handled many ans have 5 other marks sat in my collection so experience comes into it

Gold coins have been fakes for thousands of years lustre, eye appeal are very hard to replicate in hand its easier

If you worry about fakes too much it would stop you buying virtually every gold coin in my opinion, the banks referenced in the article are not experts in numistmatics neither am i, but i reckon i would hold my own against deirdrie the cashier from barclays

Cautious well considered buying from trustworthy sources is the key

If you mean german 20 marks i have 5

It happens you have an 1888 Friedrich, which is special - 1888 was a year that saw three German Emperors: Wilhelm I, Friedrich III, Wilhelm II, who all had their coins minted. So a mini collection within 20 Mark would be to have all three 1888 coins.
