2022 Sovereign design revealed?

Recommended Posts

Okay so here’s what I learnt…

The design is similar to the old circulating £1 coin.  A picture of it was shared further up in this thread. Here it is again.  I don’t know whether it will have the date 2022 below the Royal Arms design or not.

image.jpeg.8fa7c7bacad4fdd5a96b02eba31d1ca1.jpeg

The release is slated for the second or third week of November (so I’m assuming that means either Nov 8 or Nov 15 since the RM usually does big releases on a Monday?)

Mintages are supposedly very close to the 2017 Sovereign mintages.

This information is from a reputable source, but not 100% confirmed, so please don’t hold me to it.  We shall see in due course. 😀

I suppose it is possible, in order to surprise everyone, the date could be set out as "1952-2022" - just to show that the Mint has put some effort into the design, but maybe not!

Actually how stupid of me…

My own first post in this thread has the description of the reverse as:

Every five-pound piece, two-pound piece, sovereign and half-sovereign shall have for the obverse impression Our effigy with the inscription “· ELIZABETH II ∙ DEI ∙ GRA · REGINA ∙ FID ∙ DEF” and for the reverse a depiction of Our Royal Coat of Arms and the date of the year. The coins shall have a grained edge.’

I don’t think the RM will release mintage figures in advance.  Traditionally they will release individually, the Sovereign and Half Sovereign as well as the pesky Quarter.  And if they replicate recent years there will be SOTD issues and a Bu 5 Sovereign Piece.

In terms of sets- in my opinion, the RM should have never started to strike a Quarter Sovereign and stuck to the trusty old 4 Coin and 3 coin sets- 5 Sov to Half and 2 Sov to Half.

I guess however, that nuisance Quarter Sovereign opened up sales opportunities.  Since 2009 and its inception they have flitted about and deviated several times when issuing Sets- for example- 2010, 2011 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015 they issued 4 different sets (odd they didn’t start this from 2009- first year 1/4):

The four sets were:
5 Sov to 1/4
2 Sov to 1/4
2 Sov to 1/2
Sov to 1/4

In 2016 & 2017 they moved back to the  ‘new normal’ 3 set issues:
5 Sov to 1/4
2 Sov to Half
Sov to 1/4

Then 2018 onwards it’s back to issuing 4 sets!

I guess we won't know if its going to be a 4 or a 3 coin set issues until the release day.

There should be a Half / Full / 3 Coin standard set / 5 coin set /and If they are doing a 4 coin set, they 'normally' keep them all to themselves.

I'm probably in a minority of one, but I don't greatly care what the design turns out to be - apart from a limited interest curiosity about the pure aesthetics of it - because so long as the Mint continues its apparently inflexible policy of using only copper to dilute the gold in a sovereign, and seems not to care about the resulting almost pink look, I will not be buying any more modern sovereigns. I bought two without realising just how unattractive in reality they are compared to a Victorian sovereign or the gold Britannias.

I expect a bit of flak for this statement, but there it is.

Good luck to the rest of you, however.

Hi. Please can you provide more details about your comment about the 4 coin set? Thank you.

I don't own any gold proof coins, but I would seriously consider buying the 2022 proof sovereign and/or a 3 coin set contain a double, full and half sovereign.

Ideally I just want a BU (not proof) 2022 quintuple sovereign and (if it's the same reverse design as the proof) a bullion 2022 full sovereign.

The way I see it is we are witnessing history - this is the first ever Platinum Jubilee of any reigning British monarch. It is history happening in my lifetime.

Personally, I would rather get the 2022 Proof Sovereign than a Queen Victoria Sovereign of the same price.

But that’s just me. 🙂

This post has all but convinced me to buy this sov. Having a piece of history that you can hand to your family in years to come will be something that only a few thousand people can say about these particular sovs. I'm hoping the significance and difference in design make for them being sought after in the future as well.

Any views on whether to get the single sov vs the 3 Coin set? I'm tempted by both tbh and my gut tells me the single sov might be the better option.... Although don't ask me why!

I think if you’re after the Sov, 1/2 Sov, and 1/4 Sov, getting  the 3-coin set may work out to be *slightly* cheaper than getting the 3 coins individually.

No crystal ball. Hope I'm wrong would be nice for her to live at least another few years to get longest reigning monarch in history. She not long lost Phil (hasn't replaced her corgis that I know of) the Palace has lied about hospital stays, her trip to Ireland was cancelled due to health concerns, and the grandkids have been called back.

But back swinging back on topic hope the design is better than the 2012 not a great design imo also hope it's not a privy marked shield but wouldn't put it past rm

I can't see anything about the family being called back. I've only done a quick Google search but nothing immediate comes up. I'd of thought it would in her maj's case though.

Oooo neither can I now 😕 article stated they flew in to Heathrow/Gatwick late afternoon with a pic of them masked up hoping straight into a range rover unless it was meant to be kept quiet

I understand that there's a complete news (including social media blackout) prepared ready for "Operation London Bridge" (the death of the queen). However I'm not sure if this extends to if she's crititally ill, I suspect not, but you never know.

If this were the case, Robda1986 would be privy to very sensitive information.

William and his family were seen departing for a holiday from Heathrow on Thursday, according to newspapers.  🤷‍♂️

I've often wondered about this.

The next year's coin are generally minted in the last months of the current year (as far as I know), but should the monarch die some way short of the turn of year, do they just melt them all down, or issue them posthumously?

The last time to my knowledge any coins were issued posthumously were the small Maundy silver coins of William III dated 1702 - bearing in mind that at the time New Year's Day was celebrated on 25th March, so when William died on 8th March it was still 1701.

When the calendar was changed in 1752 and New Year's Day moved to January 1st, his death date was updated to 1702 (same with Henry VIII - previously 1546, and Charles I - the original date 1648 is inscribed on his coffin).

Anyhow, I hope the Queen perks up and keeps going, I want her to beat her mother's age and out reign Louis XIV's 72 years.

Well said! Unfortunately the RM is not listening.

I did write to the RM about a month ago about the colour, and silver content.

After 3 weeks, I chased them, and received an answer.

There will be no change for the imminent 2022 proof sovereigns release.

I have already posted about my e-mail suggestion elsewhere on TSF, so won't repeat it here.

I did respond to push it further, and will continue to do so.
