I have suggested to the RM that to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the death of Julius Richard Petri in 1921 they should issue a 10oz silver coin. The reverse would be left blank except for a circle near the edge to represent a Petri dish. 

 

I postulated that before long the inevitable outbreak of milk spots would enable the RM to claim the first mintage of a "living coin".

At that point their official title seems to have been the "1st Middlesex and 6th (St George's) Rifle Volunteer Corps." Later to become part of the Territorial Force. The Rifle Volunteers are an interesting thing.

Now my oldest sovereign in the collection. Figured if there is ever a gold confiscation, chances are that rare 19th century coins might be exempt. They look fabulous! I've graded modern double sovereigns (not proof) in case I will ever sell them. Graded = more trust = premium on top. Depends on what your plans are I suppose.

So after my disappointment at being told I was getting a refund instead of a replacement, I had a mystery delivery number sent to me from the royal mail.... It turned out to be this absolutely pristine, completely defect free piedfort sovereign directly from the royal mint. I had it come a couple days ago but I wanted a couple days to make sure it was as clean and as sharp as it seemed at 1st, 2nd and 3rd look. I'm over the freakin moon needless to say. Now I have to decide if I want to grade it or keep it "pure"
