The reason for this is it was a commissioned mintage from a RM client (mailed the RM but they wouldn't tell me who) overseas where many/some have already been put into pendants and are being sold online for up to £1,300  and the coin is a proof. I would love to know what kind of people are buying it like that and invite them over to tea ! The boxed coa coins are still pricey (forget spot prices if you buy this) but less expensive than the pendanted (is that a word?) versions being marketed.

One small mistake in my original post is that the proof coin is 9999 not 999 and the coin is an unbelievable perfect fit in its capsule. Not a hint of a noise....at least, not the one I received.

I bought half a dozen a couple of weeks ago (well you have to have some, don't you?). I quite like the reverse, it's looks like light radiating from behind miss Britannia, but I hate the background effect on the obverse. What on earth possessed them? I'd be surprised if HM would like it.

That was a nice touch!  A real reward for all the effort you put in.  Well done!

Mintage 5000 and launch price £475?

How did it get to be at HGM for £250?

I'd send that to NGC, PF70 looks to be a good investment. Even an MS69 would increase the value of the coin! Especially being as rare as it is... If you don't have 4 other gold coins to send, have@Numistacker it for you.

Not to be picky, but what are the 2 spots under the 20 on the REV? Also a large one on the OBV directly across from Krugers forehead

I am happy with it.

I just commented on Facebook that the 1/2 sovereign has a large scratch running through the OBV of the coin

Yes it does unfortunately which is why I clearly showed the condition in the pics?

No, but generally imperfections are also described, so when you call it a beautiful set thats what would be expected, not a beautiful set with one coin scratched and as you hadn't described the scratch i perhaps thought you maybe forgot to point it out in the auction description...........You may want to hop back into bed and get back out on the correct side

Don't be disingenuous- you know full well and beyond any doubt that i changed my post because I realised I moderated my language yet you chose to reply using the original language!

I sometimes think you just like argument and controversy. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me it is very definitely a beautiful set and correctly described. Buyers are welcome to go through the very detailed pictures of the obverse and reverse of every single coin that I have posted and are also within the listing and make up their own minds as to whether the set is something they would like to bid for.

Die numbers?

There are quite a lot of die number collectors out there - me included! Although it will be no surprise I started collecting the sixpences rather than the other denominations and as far as I know no one has managed to get them all for each denomination although I know someone who is very close to the full set for florins, shillings and sixpences. There are ~800 basic ones for the sixpences and I started to get regularly outbid for rare numbers and/or high grade examples which meant after 20 years I have almost given up - last time I checked we do have all the sixpence die numbers between my collection and a couple of others. It does mean lots of lower grade coins though?and a slabbed full set would be of immense numismatic importance - if it wasn't for the cost I could send at least another ~600 to Numi for grading??

The recent Bentley collection of sovereigns significantly updated the list of known die numbers for these.

I could go through all the possible reasons proposed for die numbers on coins from 1864-1879 but that's a longer story?

So are you the one in the recent video with the sixpences? They look stunning. very nice collection if it is!

I saw the descriptions and all the photos (including any marks like that one unfortunate scratch) and feel it's a stunning set and I'd be happy to own it.

Guilty, my coins although I guess my name probably gives it away!

I have been sending a few to Numi each grading, now slowly running out of ones that I think will benefit from slabbing, I probably don't need 15 MS slabbed 1866's although it might make it easier to sell the extra ones if I decide to abandon the high grade die number goal?
