I saw that today.  It was a nice little freebie.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

Scary when we used to have these in change as kids.

Yes indeed, I don't recall ever handling any, but have a vague recall from when very young of the 'Golden Hind pre decimal half penny !!

I think their production was ended in 19667 and no longer legal tender a couple of years later, maybe apart from some special sets maybe.

Hard to fathom only 50 years later we then had a coin for 1/480th of a £GBP under the pre decimalisation Carolingian monetary system;

but a fantastic reminder how Gold has done its job during the same time period - I didn't have any of course, but think gold would have been under £70/oz in those early 1970's.

A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.

Is a 'sample' anything different from a regular penny? It doesn't look different to me?!

As I understand It's a sample coin in a case.  The coin itself is just an ordinary coin.

£1 used to be quite a lot of money in the 19th century - a sovereign was legal tender for £1 and the bullion value of the metal was less than that.  In 1900 a typical house in London cost about £250-300.  It wasn't until WWI, where inflation saw the pound reduced to about a third of its pre-war value, that the bullion value of the gold first exceeded the face value of a sov.  They were never put back into circulation after that.

In 1962, I "earned" sixpence a week at primary school clearing the lunchtime dinner tables. That was 2.5p.

Sound money is not a guarantee of a free society, but a free society is impossible without sound money. We are currently a society enslaved by debt.

well when they stopped being legal tender my granny of all people somehow knew that the ciggy vending machines mistook the old pennies for 50p and sent us around the pubs and we made out like bandits....she was quite a character :)
