Got these back from grade and absolutely over the moon. All stunning in their own right but the Tetradrachm is something else, all that history ...

1915 Perth Ms64. The rarest (?) Perth date in an excellent grade

Following on from my post on 1916 Melbourne, an unappreciated rarity, this post continues in the same theme but via George V Perth mint. There are those who exalt other Perth George V dates as being rare or scarce. 1926/1930 according to Marsh as rare dates or 1916/17/25/27/28/29/31 as scarcer dates. However on current data in Pcgs population report, 1915 has the fewest graded examples. The 1915-P below was one I hadn’t sought out but ‘found’ by accident, a rare year and 2nd highest grade, I think I picked up a bargain. I’d be interested amongst the Australian collectors if they were able to give me a sense of where the market price on this Perth full sovereign might be, as I haven’t come across this year & grade going through sales.

Thanks for reading & for any comments.

Very nice coin, the last few at this grade look like they went for ~500CHF with MS62/MS63 going for a bit less (350-450).

Heritage did have two this year at MS64 which went for $1200-$1400 but looking at all the other prices these buyers seem to have overpaid! I guess they wanted one in a PCGS holder.

  3. Finally managed to get my hands on the book covering the proof and patterns for the Napoleonic coinage in Italy. It also includes the auction history for some of the issues which I have not seen in a book before so that makes my life much easier. :D

The quality of some of these issues also supports my thoughts that the Italian mints were a complete shambles compared to the French, Spanish, Dutch and German mints:lol:

  4. Finally picked up a bit of silver :D MS62 Spanish 1808 SCN 8 reales - one of the more common dates but it is from the Napoleonic period. There are just a few in higher grades but these are often marked, have pronounced die cracks and the strike on the hair is much weaker so I think this a nicer coin so more than happy.

The piece of Napoleonic copper that I was after had an estimate of 150 went for 950:o and I won't even mention the Napoleon 1812W gold 20 francs

As a collector of colonial coins this sale is always full of spectacular top grade pieces so when the catalogue arrives I always go out and buy a Euromillions ticket and pray, god must be self-isolating

I was hoping for 4k to be honest but some bugger in the room kept going for it. Its the single finest between NGC & PCGS so I went for it.

I watched about 300 of the lots & nearly all went for minimum 4x the estimate & alot by even more. Good luck with any you are after.

Prices are mad - just lost out on another - one little bit of copper so far and two other people wanted that:lol:

Auctions are going crazy high at the moment but had to get this. Told the misses it was 2k instead of the 5.8k. It was being sold in Swiss Francs so said that was the exchange rate.

Congratulations - I watched that go through - stunning coin.

I have one coin so far in this sale as the ~20 I picked out have all gone for 7 to 12x estimate which was far too high. :o I have a few lots of interest left to go - at this rate it is not looking good!

Agreed - sixpences ran from 1551 until 1970 with numerous varieties and about 600 die numbers (1864 to 1879) - then there is Australia, South Africa, British West Africa, New Zealand ....

Just writing that has made me think typesets are a great idea:lol:

Very interesting, thank you for sharing.

The markers seem minuscule. On most counterfeit sovereigns there are easy-to-see points that give away the fakes... but a tiny positive dot (which can also be on genuine items) or a tiny dent on the Swiss coat of arms.... seems quite difficult to detect. Apparently the stars on the rim are the easiest way to detect a fake at least on the 1922 Vreneli. 🤔

I thought that - some of the fakes look to be better struck than the real ones

Had quite a busy morning... :) and a few interesting bits

THE nicest toned Morgan I've ever seen- I bought this to sell but fell in love with it! The camera makes it look terrible but this has the nicest natural rainbow toning.

What I presume is a trench art engraved 3d young head victoria. This has such amazing detail and never seen one quite like it! If anyone has any informaiton on it including the likely story behind it, values etc I'd love to hear it as apart from the hobo nickels in the states, I've never really seen engraved coins with this much detail.

A nice selection of world silver including Philippines (50c and 10c) when it was a US territory, a relavitvely hard to find Lithuanian 5 litai, Swedish 2 Kr and Polish 2 Zloty as well as some Aussia, Barber dimes, old 6 pence and other bits :)

Nice coins, the 1836 sixpence is a difficult coin to find in any grade!

  11. Lots of LMU coins at the Caranett Collection Part III - Gold Coins of Western Europe being sold at Heritage on October 11. Complete date runs anyone??

I got the same problem with types in american coins, capped bust, ok, seated liberty ok, draped bust, getting harder, flowing hair?, cheaper to buy a car...lol.

The Napoleonic coinage of Italy is full of varieties, overdates, recut dies between mints etc, plus the reference books generally do not agree with one another or use the same terminology!

Like an idiot I thought I would try and sort it all out and just keep finding more and more unrecorded varieties, and mint state coins are not common either which makes things even more difficult. The mints at Bologna, Milan and Venice must have been a complete shambles compared to the French mints. A retirement project I think 😄
