Who here was successful bidding in yesterday’s Heritage Platinum night auction?

Some amazing coins were Auctioned from the Lake County Collection. I failed at all my target coins but I bought one coin only.

1869 proof Florin. This is a proof of record R3 and the only one graded by either PCGS or NGC..

Congratulations! Lots of British Proofs and Patterns and more on Monday.

I didn't get anything I bid on even though I went much higher than I should have ☹️

Two beautiful little sixpences: 1835 and 1837. This completes my collection of William IV sixpences!

The 1937 isn’t brilliant and I will keep looking for better examples, but the 1935 is blowing my mind. It is in such good condition.

    Nice to see some sixpences!

As it is the key date I just wondered what your 1836 coin looks like? I am trying to complete a slabbed set and I know that is going to be the hardest date to fill, I sold mine (nVF) ages ago and now regret it😟

@Gildeon I have just (10 minutes ago) ordered a nice little bit of bedtime reading...all I need to do now is learn to read French! If you would like any information out of it let me know..that said...I have bought it with very little knowledge of what it contains 😂

Very useful guide, also almost the only guide for Monaco coins. The current issue also has the Napoleonic issues from Italy added which is great, pity they are restricted to the gold issues only!

The other French coin price guide is Le Franc, I find it interesting that the mintage numbers are different between the two guides😄

All these notes fit into my wallet I have never had any problems taking 25,000 rupees in or out of India as it is a small amount of currency. I would not want to take anymore though due to limit being 25,000 see advice from Transferwise

    https://transferwise.com/gb/blog/taking-cash-in-or-out-of-india

Sorry I should have mentioned I hold OCI - Overseas resident of India passbook. Even though born in the UK due parents being born in India and I hold British Passport I am still classified an OCI no need for Visa regardless duration of stay. PS this should not matter as money in your wallet and nobody should be allowed to go through contents of your personal wallet unless beeps in the scanner.

That explains things! Interesting that the UK Government advice is different to transferwise.com and I am sure the UK Government is always right😄😄

    https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/india/money

'In November 2016, the Prime Minister announced that old 500 and 1,000 Rupee banknotes would be withdrawn from immediate circulation. It’s no longer possible for non-Indian nationals to exchange these old notes. For more information and advice about how to get access to cash, visit the Reserve Bank of India website

There are restrictions on bringing Indian rupees into India. Visitors, including tourists, are not permitted to bring any amount of Indian currency into the country. If you’re visiting India, you can bring cash or travellers’ cheques (in pounds sterling or another foreign currency) and/or a bank card with you and exchange or withdraw rupees once in India. If you’re resident in India, you can bring up to INR 7,500 into the country.'

Lovely notes but when I see high domination notes in India sometimes get very nervous about hyperinflation :(. These notes I brought back from India 25,500 rupees equivalent £275 or $359 not advisable to land in India without having some local currency.

I thought you couldn't take any local currency into India now - you have to get in there?

Finally, my last educational contribution to the thread for a while!....

HOW DEALERS HAVE CHANGED TACT RECENTLY....not to our advantage!

    This exemplifies it perfectly...

Two 20 Francs Angels were minted - 1848 and 1849. The next wasnt until 1871!

In August 2018, I was able to call BBP, get them to have a sort through their stock, and then purchase what dates I wanted without paying a premium above their listed price. Their customer service I have always found to be brilliant, but this often comes at a price!

So, six months ago I bought my 1849 from them for £220 including postage. A coin in pretty good condition...

    CB83104D-5240-4E0E-863C-1B013E356880.thumb.jpeg.af278f72236b041bacdeb05308a39fbb.jpeg

Wind the clock forward to today..they now sell a lot of their angels by date and charge accordingly.

No idea who came up with this price,as it’s crazy, but look at the 1848 that they currently have for sale...(note: the mintage for the 1848 is higher than my 1849)

    C9B61B6D-FCAB-47A1-8E7B-1E70F02AB84E.thumb.png.343be33bdbe3c67f78ea296d9960d204.png

Don’t think I will be buying this one any time soon..

On top of this, they are getting harder to source as @ilovesilverireallydo mentioned earlier. Six moths ago I could have bought several from Chards, today they have none for sale- even at 25% above spot they have sold out!

Perhaps they are all in Germany 🇩🇪 !@eddi

Some 'bullion' dealers are now having a laugh by selecting dates of all sorts of things and increasing the premium.

A slabbed 1848 in NGC AU55 sold at Heritage on the 20th December 2018 for $264 including premium (many more examples over the last year or so for around this price), I hope the BBP example is a definite MS66:lol:

😮 whoa! The big guns are coming out now..that’s a real Bobby Dazzler! I have no idea how many of those were minted but I can’t imagine many..

According to Gadoury the mintage for ANXI is 226,115 which is one of the highest mintages for the 40 francs and therefore the most common (which is why I have that date😄).

My lowest mintage 20 Francs is the one below with a mintage of only 522!

I am now off to move 1 ton of horse muck onto the potato beds - glamorous life this coin collecting😄

@SilverTanner very nice early coin. I am trying not to like it too much, as I fear collecting Napoleon 1 coins would prove to be both difficult and expensive.

I agree, which is why I only have a few😄 I think a full set of Napoleon 20 and 40 Francs in decent grades would set you back more than £200K! Common dates in bullion grade would be much much less and bulk lots regularly appear at a range of European auctions.

AN12 is the second year of the new monetary system, I don't have a 20 Francs for the first year, although I do have a 40 Francs from the year ANXI (this is the missing olive variety)

Hi, whilst you were all enjoying a nice long snooza, I managed to get the thread name changed with the assistance of @HelpingHands

Decided to ditch the French ! I think we discussed this a while ago but never got round to doing it.

    Regards to all..

    Kook

Many thanks, the LMU has a fascinating history - here is one of my FRENCH 20 Francs

    What a coin.... 🤗😍

1853 Proof, nothing much more to say but wow!

I suspect many don't even know this rarity even exists, very very few in existence now.

Pictures (especially from phone) don't do it any justice, so I will do a 4k video at some point so others can enjoy it

Beautiful! I only have the sixpence from that set😞😄

  11. Another one for the Vrenelli fans is the NGC Registry Set:-

    https://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetListing.aspx?PeopleSetID=169348

Contains some useful info for the high grade rather than bullion collector. I like the comment of 'The 1904,1905, 1906 and 1926 dated coins are the keys to the set and are seldom encountered in any condition' so anyone have these dates bought as 'bullion'??? as I will now be looking out for them :D. I only have Napoleon 20 and 40 francs at the moment.

Delighted to say that I bought this delightful coin.

In 1831 there were 225 of these minted for the Proof Set.

Beautiful coin - you didn't go for the sovereign or double sovereign then?? (or maybe you did:P)

I didn't get the coin I was after, it went for >$10,000 in the end, it wasn't even the key date in the series and I was expecting much much less as they are usually ~$1000! My attempted date-run will now revert to a typeset:lol:

A 1967 set of silver and bronze medals from Rhodesia. Don't know who the person is but I will research it.

Was thinking to send only the silver for grading but now I would feel bad to separate them, so they will be on their way to @Numistacker in the near future. 🧐

    DSC_1565.JPG

I have an interest in British Colonial history and although I collect coins of Southern Rhodesian (George V and George VI) I have not seen that set before - he had a very interesting life! From the certificate you just need to find the gold version:lol:

How did that get all the way to japan then all the way bak home. Thats a well travelled coin!

There seems to be quite a few collectors of top grade British and French coins in Japan, most coins seem to have been bought from the main US auctions at some point - so the shilling is even more well travelled!

As some of you may know from previous posts I have been buying less smaller items and have sold a few things over the last couple of months.

Today I bought this at the Baldwin’s Charles Wander Collection Auction

it is technically a proof of record or VIP proof that was never made for sale in a mint proof set.

    Beautiful coin, congratulations!

I was outbid on the two sixpences I was after - they went for silly money😞
