  1. I like to try and buy a bullion sovereign at least once every two months as a minimum. It gives me the thrill of a purchase (as sad as that sounds) with the bonus of saving my money.

I see a few dealers do a lucky dip - best value coins so thinking about that too, anyone go that route, was wondering do you get different heads etc as it might make the hobby more interesting but keep costs down?.

Ive found that if you buy the “lucky dip” options, 7/10 you’re getting a George V sovereign. I think sovereigns are pretty unique in their semi numismatic properties which does keep it interesting. The variety is just so vast, especially when you start getting down to Queen Vic’s die numbers etc.

I’ll probably be labelled a blasphemer and be cast out of the forum for saying this but I really enjoy buying post 2000 non special year bullion QEII sovereigns and seeing my stack of them grow. Just a nice pile of boring, stackable, cgt free crown gold bought with no numismatic premium.

Whilst compared one on one to a one ounce coin a sovereign may seem lame, they sure look and feel nice when there’s 20 or so stacked up in a tube.

  2. I think a lot of us are guilty of chasing the magical “pf/pr70” grades. These grading companies have collectors by the balls in many respects.

Easier said than done, but if price is an issue perhaps buy the raw coin you like for a decent price and forget the idea of grading it all together.
Save the disappointment of it not coming back as a 70 and enjoy the coin for what it is.

The grading process is subjective and many people will tell you they’ve had 70s come back as 69s and lesser coins come back as 70s. Sometimes it seems it depends on which way the wind is blowing as to what grade a coin achieves. It’s a gamble. If you must have a 70 I personally would just suck it up and pay for an already graded 70.

(full disclosure: I can’t practice what I preach and I’m as guilty as any for chasing 70s).

  3. Sovs at 1% over spot, or perhaps even under spot when you bought it? On a dealers website, on a day when the price has crashed?

I find it hard to believe but congratulations on a very good buy if you did manage it.

Love these! I have them in halves only. Not planning on getting the fulls but am hugely tempted by the doubles!!

Don’t you need the 2016 too?

Hmm not strictly as it’s a special year obverse and I’m only collecting the special reverses. I must say I do think the doubles are the perfect size for showing off the designs really nicely.

Also can’t say I’m a big fan of the 2016 Butler Portrait. That being said, I will no doubt end up picking it up at some point.

Which was better NGC or PCGS? I can only assume NGC given you are looking to change across to them.

    PS. Why a minefield?

@Silverman2U There’s no guarantee that they will crossover at that grade and could come back in the same holders losing the grading fee in the process.

I didn’t grade them, I bought them graded. Going to change them for the simple reason that i really dislike the PCGS holders.
