The postie came with 2 coins today, both Young head halves. One is graded AU Details (first time  I bought a graded details coin), the other ungraded, both are obverse 3.

I bought the details coin for the lack of wear, and because I believed at least some of the “surface hairlines” might be die cracks/wear. To be fair, it has quite a few scratches, under a magnifier.

Although you can see the scratches on the AU details coin it is still a really nice coin. I was looking at that one too, very nice pick up.

I kept going back for a look, before finally caving in.

Lol same coin same seller nice one

I think this one will have to grow on me in terms of design,.  I'm 5 coins into the series and starting to question continuing with the remainder, we'll see.  In any case, it's gold, it's shiny and hopefully the premium paid for these little coins will hold up in the future.

Having served in the second Gulf War with our coalition partners, this latest arrival has great meaning...the “Behind Enemy Lines” Gulf War Gold Full Sovereign Coin Medal Set.

The set includes a 1980 Gold Sovereign, one of 16,289 Sovereigns that were issued to British Military personnel taking part in Operation GRANBY as part of the Coalition Forces during the Gulf War 17 January to 26 February 1991.

Sovereigns were provided by the Ministry of Defence and carried by any servicemen who, it was thought, might find themselves isolated and in need of bargaining power if confronted by unfriendly forces.

Several Sovereigns were used during the War, mainly by Royal Air Force crews shot down over enemy territory and SAS, but all the uncaptured coins were returned to the Ministry of Defence at the conclusion of the conflict, having served their purpose.

The Ministry of Defence confirms that this sovereign is one of the coins returned during the Gulf War by military personnel on completion of their missions into enemy territory.

I wasn't aware of this set, also has meaning for me - though 1st time around!

I still carry a few sovereigns when overseas just in with my normal coins - ruins their grade though?

Nice set @CadmiumGreen but what is the medal on the right ? I also served in op granby ( desert storm) but that medal does not look like my liberation medals that I received off the Saudis or Kuwaitis .

Daz, thank you...the medal on the right is the Liberation of Kuwait Medal, 3rd Class. There were five Liberation of Kuwait medal types, intended for differing grades of rank.

Really ? I never knew that mine must be a class 5 then , assuming that's the lowest

Fifth Class was intended for non-commissioned personnel. Fourth and Third Class were intended for Warrant and Officer grades. Second and First Class were intended for one to four star grades.
