Today I Received.....

Message added by ChrisSilver

The Today I received section is for private individuals to share items they have purchased for their collection / as part of their investment.

The Today I received section is not to be used for businesses to promote their business. Trade members and those operating as a business in the eyes of the forum are invited to enquire about a Dealer Sub Forum, where you may start your own Today _____ received topic to post your commercial purchases. E.g. The Today Chards Received..... topic.

Yes, the lighting was a bit c**p, they do look coppery in real life though. Wish they had that golden yellow look like the old ones.

There are a couple of guides in the photography section that would help.  See links in my sig.

Today I’ve received the chance of an 1885m Sovereign, I’ve looked at the mintage figures but I noticed there are two different ones the Geo and dragon and the shield, the one I’ve been offered is a shield.

Anyone know the quantities of each before I take the plunge??

Marsh book doesn't give a break down of the 2.9mil which covers both reverse designs.

In terms of rating in the same book it gets 'N' for normal, making it one of the more common Melbourne shield dates to come across.

Condition Vs price is most important to a collector I'd say

It appears from below link that the Melbourne shield is quite rare 🤔

https://www.chards.co.uk/1885-gold-sovereign-victoria-young-head-shield-sydney/6108

"1885 Victoria young head shield reverse gold sovereigns were minted at Melbourne and Sydney. The Melbourne Mint issue is distinctly rare."

The one on sale at Chards is from the Sydney Mint, presumably the rarer Melbourne Shield version would demand a greater price.

The Sydney one looks rarer according to the mintage figures on https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces24198.html (or am I looking at the wrong thing?)

The different densities show a different colour on the screens. Put a tube of gold in your hand luggage and watch the staff suddenly wake up and start paying attention when your bag goes through

Two parents, two teenagers, each with 4 or 5 gold coins mixed in with a handful of other loose pocket change that's dropped into the saucer along with keys etc before going through the metal detector, and I suspect more often the staff will carry on snoozing :)

You're right that the mintage figure is more for the Melbourne mint & therefore more common & that's reflected in the prices, however what it fails to mention is the Melbourne shield back version which appears to be extremely rare, unfortunately can't seem to locate how rare 😕

Those mintage figure are for the shield back version aren't they?

The george and dragon mintage figures are on https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces9310.html

The mintage figures for the Melbourne mint doesn't differentiate between the shied and George & Dragon, not that I can see anyway 😕, maybe Lawrence Chard could give us a bit more info if he sees this post, he just mentions that it is much rarer 😁

Yes, indeed!

Photo tip.  If it’s not in focus don’t post it!
If it can’t be helped, then let the viewer have the information by text eg ‘This is a 1/10th oz nugget called ‘ Little Hero 1890’

Fortunately your obverse was in focus, so was able to find out that info.

1987 had a different nugget for each size, so you may want to collect the whole set!  Here’s my 1oz called the Welcome Stranger 1869 …..

🤔😮you’re not wrong! I do have a small collection… 1/10ths only though!🤔😮 cheers
