This little beauty arrived today, my first foray into older Sovereign's but I couldn't resist... 200 next year!  I need to consider if it's worth grading, part of me says yes, another part prefers capsules?

Sorry for the bad pics, old phone which I refuse to upgrade while it's working 😂

I only started earlier this year but for a numbers of years have always wanted to buy some gold for the kids.

Funnily enough I started with silver brits, their birth years then got a few more then realised I could also afford to buy sovereigns.  It's more a hobby for me, as and when I have some spare money I'll buy a coin.

CaptCaveMan reacted to Lyrinn in EU: Declare how much gold you have got
Guys, we're all missing the golden opportunity to be had here.
Step 1) Open a boating business that will safely transport previous metals.
Step 2) All UK forum members agree to take hold of the precious metals that our fellow EU forum members have in their stacks; transactions to be sent in the post. A small fee, of course.
Step 3) Declare that two, terrible accidents occured to all EU forum members. First, the metal was lost in the post by the Royal Mail (very likely). Second, there was a terrible boating accident (also very likely, it never stops raining in the British Isles and that's just summer); whatever metal wasn't lost in the post was lost in the boating accident. This also included the entire stack that the UK forum member had (we were just trying to be environmentally friendly and ship it all at once to make Greta Thunderbirds-are-go proud!).
Step 4) All EU forum members need to immediately tell their governments about what happened in Step 3. Something like: *Roll eyes* "Sacre bleu, those bloody Brits and their tea sipping ways; at it again, don't you know, Merkel!" All UK forum members need to tell HMRC that the EU is to blame for sending over so much precious metal that it caused the terrible boating accident by capsizing the boats. *Roll eyes* "Sacre bleu, those bloody European mainlanders and their coffee-sipping ways; at it again, don't you know, Boris!"

I bought my first ounce of gold at the peak too. It was the James Bond bullion bar from the royal mint for the high price of £1630. I still have the receipt. Right after I bought my first ounce of gold the spot price of gold dropped. At one point the was the low low price of £1300. I could have saved myself over £300 if I had predicted the drop in spot price or waited. But thats the market for you. Sometimes you buy on a high and sometimes you buy on a low. That’s just how the market goes. I bought more ounces of gold since then not at the peak which has cancelled each other out and bought the cost average price down. I am also of the mindset that you don’t lose money until you sell it. You may of made more money if you had bought something else or got it for cheaper if you times it perfectly. But you are never going to be able to always buy the prefect item or time the buy perfectly. There is no point in worrying about it as there is nothing you can do and you will never get anywhere. It’s a learning experience so you just need to learn from it and move on to your next venture. I am sure in time with both the slow recovery of the economy and high rate of inflation that it will not be long now until the spot price of gold goes back up and surpasses the recent high peak. But until then I have a nice James Bond bullion bar in my collection and I have got my foot in the door of gold stacking. What more can you ask for?

I use to use my own spreadsheet, then one of our members kindly donated his spreadsheet. It's linked to real time prices and other useful bits. I suppose you have to consider security, we are a very private bunch. A little while a go I was trying to get a widget for the front of my phone, wanted it to constantly display the gold to silver ratio. I couldn't find one of them either. I think there is definitely a market for these kind of apps or maybe make a good project.

CaptCaveMan reacted to Zhorro in Suggested amendments to the 2021 edition of Marsh (revised by Hill)
As I stated in my original post, the 2021 edition of Marsh has not added many new Die number discoveries to the half sovereign list (p.187).  So, on Friday (30/4/21) I reviewed eBay’s listing of half sovereigns and I managed to spot eight unrecorded Die numbers.  As I don’t have the copyright for the pictures, I am not showing them, but I have listed the eBay items’ numbers:
    1865 Die 12 (item 313319460272)
    1865 Die 24 (item 164169726902)
    1871 Die 68 (item 223622642371)
    1872 Die 124 (item 153279604923)
    1873 Die 278 (item 324583971493 – listed as 1872)
    1874 Die 10 (item 402328242603)
    1877 Die 40 (item 153797177047)
    1878 Die 50 (item 402636885621)
This shows that discoveries of new half sovereign die numbers can be made and it would be useful to keep a track of them.
As I mentioned in my original post, I have an 1867 Die 2 half sovereign which is unrecorded in the 2021 edition of Marsh, so I am now showing it.
