Received a bunch of coins on Friday. Firstly two small world gold coins, a 1985 1/20 gold Panda 🐼 (am putting together a date run) and a tiny 1913 1/5th Libra from Peru. This coin has a tiny 15mm diameter so although it has a 60,000 coin mintage it’s thought that about 75% of them have been lost behind sofa cushions throughout Peru 🇵🇪. Next a group of coins to add to my world silver collection. - China 🇨🇳 Kwangtung 1890 20 Fen, lovely EF condition. - a very cool German East Africa 1910J 1/4 Rupee (Vg/fine). Great helmet, if I had one of these I would never take it off. - 1812 one Rouble from Russia 🇷🇺 (fine). Minted the year of the invasion by Napoleon. - 1953 circulation commemorative coin (100th year anniversary of the birth of Cecil Rhodes) from Southern Rhodesia. - lovely 1931 5 Latis (EF) from Latvia 🇱🇻.37 points -

Here's a Gold coin I recently acquired to add to my collection. The coin is from the Eastern Roman Empire dated AD 457-474 from the Constantinople Mint. The obverse depicts Roman Emperor Leo I and the reverse portrays Victoria who was the Goddess Of Victory in both war and peace. This Solidus was a highly pure solid 24k Gold coin issued in the later Roman Empire weighing in at 4.45 grams and 20mm in diameter. The solidus was the main gold coin of commerce during late Roman times and this particular coin was also handed out by the late Emperor to Roman soldiers for 1 months pay as well. The meaning of SOLIDUS is an ancient Roman gold coin introduced by Constantine (4th century) and used to the fall of the Byzantine Empire (15th century). This is my first Gold coin purchased and imo, for myself I couldn't of picked a better one to start off my Gold coin collection.32 points -

🏴 England Gold Angel 'Touch Piece' 1660-1685 – Charles II A very pleasing example of this rare and desirable ceremonial medallic issue. Holed as issued with comparatively fewer distractions versus many previously sold counterparts. The example on offer has been lightly cleaned but has not been mounted, bent, or soldered. This is the larger issue with a diameter of approximately 22 mm and a weight of around 3.70 grams. More worn examples tend to fall south of 3.5 grams with those in better states of preservation being north of this. Compare with some previously auctioned pieces (including relevant fees and buyer's premium)... £3,075 ($3,840) – 2023 October 22 - 23 Spotlight: Great Britain World Coins Showcase Auction #61344 / Lot #25065: https://coins.ha.com/itm/great-britain/great-britain-charles-ii-gold-touch-piece-medal-nd-1661-vf-details-holed-ngc-/a/61344-25065.s?ic4=ListView-ShortDescription-071515 £1,935 – Auction: 22106 - Spink Numismatic e-Circular 18 - British and World Coins, Medals and Tokens - e-Auction Lot: 1507 (hammer of £1,500 Subject to 5% tax on Hammer Price in addition to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium): https://www.spink.com/lot/22106001507 £1,612 – Auction: 21004 - The Sir Rodney Sweetnam KCVO CBE Collection of English Gold Coins and Other Properties - Conducted behind closed doors Lot: 35 (hammer of £1,300 Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium): https://spink.com/lot/21004000035 £1,320 ($1,650) – Research Coins: The Coin Shop CNG: https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=298838# There is a deep and significant history behind these gold 'touch pieces' stemming back to the age-old belief that monarchs exhibited Christ-like healing abilities and that those touched by the monarch could be healed. The Stuart Restoration of 1660 seen the reintroduction of the ceremonial practice of 'touching for the King's evil' by Charles II. 'The King's evil' was a colloquial name used to refer to an illness known as scrofula, a tuberculous swelling of the lymph glands. The ceremony consisted of King Charles II laying his hand on the afflicted prior to them being presented with a pre-holed gold token to be worn around the neck with a ribbon. This showed that they had been healed by the King. The obverse depicts Saint Michael slaying Satan in the form of a dragon and the reverse boasts a ship at sea with legend around. These gold angel 'touch pieces' were produced at The Royal Mint at Tower Hill, London. 🏷️ Price is £2,200 GBP / €2,570 / $2,745 USD Price includes fully-insured worldwide shipping.
