What a fantastic moustache, I was only looking at one of these coins (20 kroner I believe) in Atkinson's yesterday. The portraits are amazing but told myself I mustn't open up a whole new collecting rabbit hole for myself!

I see I've misidentified the coin but it's the same moustache lol!

Umberto 20 lire you were probaly looking at belting moustache

Thank You for the info, I've noticed so many gold kroner/krona coins from late nineteenth early twentieth century from Norway, Sweden, Netherlands Denmark and so on with fantastic portraits and as a major bonus many have superb shieldback designs. It's a whole new rabbit hole for me but I must resist... I tell you... I must resist...  the prices look good... No I must resist!

A nice original 1809 Eight Reals with Ferdinand VII on the obverse. Minted at the Mexico City mint. Picked this up yesterday.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

Tolkien gold proof, silver proof and silver piedfort

Very attractive coins, direct from RM.  Unfortunately, of the three only the silver proof is good enough to keep.  The others will be returned.

Here are some microscope photos.

1. With the gold proof, it looks like KCIII has been assassinated.

2. And the piedfort has some fairly obvious scratches near the glyph.

3. Nothing seriously wrong with the silver proof.  So I've included a photograph showing the 'gold' overlay around the edge, for those curious about it.

please excuse poor photos

The second one was alright - decent lighting and in focus.

I think these are fibres or swarf struck-through, rather than scratches. Some of my annual set proofs had similar looking things.

You may be right. I'll have another look with the microscope. They ain't coming off though.
