We are getting boiled on every level now, nobody seems to be bothered, noone seems to care.

I feel like I'm a visitor now in the reality I used to enjoy in my 20s :(

Keep me away from the ' general public' and newspapers, tv, radio, bookface, social media

    switch off and drop out

think for yourself. Ignore all you're told. Question

it's a mad mad mad world

    I agree Paul wholeheartedly.

When you realise everything you thought was true is a lie, at least this is the conclusion I came to sometime ago.

Although the past four years have been a huge eye opener even for me.

Central bank digital currencies (programmable) and we are screwed.

It was my 2017 Proof Sovereign which got a weird sort of tarnishing / bloom. Once again I had got it direct from the Royal Mint and never fiddled with it. I just went back to see it a couple years later, and that was its state.

I have seen numerous 2017 Proof Sovereign online that have the same issue. If people haven’t seen theirs for a few years, they may be in for a surprise.

I think there was another recent coin which also got the orange tarnish, but I forget which one.

    Very interesting thread!

Yep, I have the same problem with one of my 2017 Proof Sovereigns (in safety deposit box, so can not take photo). I had assumed it was copper toning/tarnishing.

It does beg the questioned, If you have a coin which has been graded, and then this happens over time?

Can you post a photo please? This could be mint error and worth a lot of money.

Perhaps poor choice of words on my part! There were a couple of bits of frosting missing on the nose and eye area of Charles II - very noticeable, in a prominent area.

I can assure you it would not be classed as a mint error!

Unfortunately I did not take any photos, but thanks for your comments.

Hopefully I get a good replacement set.

Noticed you have ordered a set. They really are  lovely coins, hope yours is a good one!

  4. Received my 2 ounce silver yesterday.

Agree, I think they are beautiful coins in hand!

Only had time to have a brief look, unfortunately they need to be returned, large section of frosting missing on one of the coins, clearly visible (and I mean clearly)  without a loupe. Hope I can get a good replacement.

Really disappointing!  With the exception of this series, stopped purchasing silver proof coins from the mint last year because of poor quality control.

    Hi Guys,  anyone know?

I've got a 5 coin set but the COA does not specify the maximum mintage of each coin which is very strange, for comparison is my COA for the 2022 jubilee 5 coin set and the individual mintages are listed.  The LEP is 1200 and there's likely to be more (trial of the pyx etc)  but I don't know how many.

I don't know if this is a mistake by the Royal Mint they just forgot or are they leaving it open to mint more?  It's unlikely and I'm betting they just forgot to put it on the COA........

Likewise I noticed this when I received my set. I sure hope it is a mistake and they have missed it off!

Banks seem to be getting worse, I actually left Barclays for this reason. I turned up to buy a car once, paid ove a few grand and the guy didn't receive it for 5 hours. Tried to phone Barclays and the phone lines were closed at weekends. He thought I was trying to rob him and I thought he was  conning me. Very stressful, it's almost like someone should invent a decentralised payment system where there is no middle man.

    Yep, it's called Bitcoin!

I have had my safety deposit box for over 5 years never had insurance. If you have contents such as Jewellery that you intend to take out and wear on special occasions then specialist insurance for safety deposit box maybe worthwhile.

    Many thanks!

In terms of off-site storage (eg. bank vault, private vaulting services), be aware of counter-party risk.   Never assume that your PM stored in these vaults are safe.  Banks may fail, fraud may occur.  Be aware of the potential risks.  There are always pros and cons of storage, whether it is at home or in a vault.

    Thanks for your comments.

Yep, I am fully aware there are risks involved, nothing is risk free!

I am based in Manchester and my advice biased on my location. Safety deposit box I would choose is Saint James Safe deposit (locations Leeds/Manchester) Offer with Saint James safety deposit boxes pay for 4 years in advance and receive the 5th free.

Dealer I would choose Chards main office is in Blackpool. I would buy a full tube + plus three additional coins of 2022 Britannia 1 oz Gold Bullion. I would not pay for postage but would arrange for collection from the Dealer when the coins available.

Spread right now on 1 oz Gold Britannia 3.75% buying 10+ and Chards buying back 1 oz Gold Britannia's for just under spot but sure they would price match Atkinson needed to sell physical gold all in one transaction.

    Buy dealer

    £19,885.58 buy 13 1oz Gold Britannia

    Sell dealer

    £19157.32 sell 13 1oz Gold Britannia

Before buy anything always investigate how much money would I lose if I needed to immediately liquidate my position. Obviously 3.75% spread could be reduced if both buying and selling was done on the Silver Forum / Facebook Groups but this would entail a slower accumulation time but the benefits would be building up reliable reputation that would be required when you need to sell the physical Gold and want to obtain better than dealer buy back prices. I would not buy bars. It may also be bit more fun to buy from private sellers (obviously you will have to do your own due-diligence) and could turn into a hobby.

Also I want to mention if you are buying full tube 1 oz Gold coins then look for the cheapest price Coininvest at the time of writing and phone your local UK dealer and ask them to price match.

Presently looking at a Safe Deposit Box for storage, and likewise I am based in Manchester, so will look at St James. Thanks for the info!

Do you think it is wise to also take out Safe Deposit Box insurance? On their website they refer to a specialist company dealing in such insurance - Ellerton Knight?

A few years ago, we had a surplus stock of those, in capsules, but without the book / certificate, possibly about 500 of them.

At one stage, we were asking customers if they would wished to accept some as "our choice bullion", and quite a few people declined.

Needless to say, I like them.

    😎

Yep, as you say Lawrence, at the time you were charging a little over bullion (if I remember correctly). I purchased one, very nice coin.

Wish I had got more of them at those prices!!

No email, but I do have it showing in my open orders. Might be different as I ordered over the phone though.

You do not receive an email if the order was placed over the phone. Hope that helps!

I like the coin, but like many, with the odd exception I am giving the RM modern proof coins a miss.

For the quality issues, I think it's one (or both) of two things:

    1. Gold coins getting gentler treatment, more time to pack and generally better QA. Also delivered by DHL/UPS due to value, which appear to have gentler hands

    2. Silver coins - many more to ship of lower value, undoubtedly a different team. Less time to pack, less QA and delivered mostly by Royal Mail. Some areas have postmen that juggle parcels etc..

Just my assumption, also the reason I stay away from silver proofs, as just not worth the time it takes to get perfect coins and then having to worry about milk spots over the years.

I think you are correct in what you say!

Other than this series, I no longer buy silver proof coins. As I had no chance (like most) of purchasing the gold at retail price from the mint, I am prepared to take a chance with these in silver.

Received my 2 ounce silver today, and it seems good to me. Think I have been lucky compared to some!

Your two gold coins look great, congratulations!

Congrats! Gutted that I didn't get one of these

I was lucky this time and picked up one of these beauties, amazing coin, can't wait for the set to be completed in March!

I know how you feel. I missed out on the 3 graces in Feb. As much as you feel happy for everyone else, it does not help.

Also, I was one of those who had to accept a refund on the Queens Beasts 2 oz silver proof 10 coin set, very disappointing!

However, you just have to move on quickly, part of being a collector. It is as it is!!
