A brand new proof coin should be nigh on flawless. Yes, it would effect value/grade.

A chap at the mint was likely finishing off one of his Benson and Hedges whilst enjoying a cup of PG Tips and a hobnob while reading the racing post.
A bit of fag ash or hobnob was probably swept into the press as he perused the runners and riders at the 2:15 at Chepstow.
In all seriousness, it is one to send back - quite how this passed Kwality Kontrol, is not surprising but disappointing.

This isn’t so much a ‘today I received’ post but it’s close enough.
Whilst going through some very old Victorian family photos from my late grandparents house, I found these at the bottom of the box.
I’m intrigued where the 1907, sadly drilled dime came from. I’ll never know.
The 1887 shilling has a nice finish to it.
They put a smile on my face, they wouldn’t grade well but I think they were my great grandfathers.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, now I know where I get it from. 😊

The details in Victorian era coins are amazing. I'm often amazed at how a talented artist can pull detail and dimension out of a small essentially two dimensional medium.

Buying bullion coins is buying precious metal - buying proof coins is buying collectible coins. The higher premium you pay the higher quality we may expect. Buying QB bullion coins and expecting no milk spots and other imperfections is like buying Fiat 500 (which I like) and expecting quality of Mini Cooper. The seller's offer was fair - I would accept it.

It's your decision to pay extra premium for bullion. They come loose in tubes, so you have to live with scratches. Very fair from your dealer, offering a exchange because of spots and scratches on bullion coins. If you want better quality coins, you should buy at least encapsuled coins. Propably not from the RM. And to be 100% sure your coins don't start milkspots, buy gold. Everything else is always a gamble.

CosmikDebris reacted to dangelo in Auction warning
I agree on the buyer beware warning 100% ...
There is a specific auction in the UK I see on saleroom online that is doing this for sure - I see coins go up to way past their bullion and numismatic value in the bid amount alone, so adding fees whould be stupid prices.  But, then in the next auction - the same coins are there again!  Either the house or seller is bidding them up, then they are "selling" but in fact no one is paying those stupid prices and the same coins appear in the next sale again.  Sometimes this lasts over several sales until one idiot who is a real bidder puts a bid on and wins, then the coin is finally sold.  I've seen this happen on a variety of coins over and over again.  But it's not widespread - it seems to be the same few auction houses doing this - what I would call a fraud and scam to be honest.
Examples - generic canadian maples & US silver eagles - "selling" for 40.00 each and terrible condition britannias (covered in milkspots which should be only worth spot price) "selling" for 40.00.
Something else I see is coins "selling" at GOOD prices - hammer goes down "SOLD" at maybe -20% under the market prices BUT next auction - the same coin is on sale again!  If it's not made the reserve it should hammer down as "PASSED" not "SOLD"!  But I think these cases are fake bids, house bids or seller bids who are winning by mistake and then the coin has to go back in the next auction looking for a victim.
I think it's a good idea to watch a few auctions for each auction house before you decide to trust them, at least you will get an idea of what the selling prices are like and you can see any trends in coins re-appearing over and over again and of course on the live videos - you can see some of the dishonest auctioneers inventing phantom bids "I can go straight in at X pounds!"  and also hesitating for so long before bringing the hammer down if it's a fake bid... sometimes pausing for a minute or two and almost begging someone real to put the final bid on and speaking all kinds of cr*p like "very rare one this"  "last chance"  "is that it?"  "only this price for this"  "you could get double this price at the market" and all the other desperate and dishonest phrases you could think of...  the best one i heard is an auctioneer shouting how RARE coins are that have mintages of 1 to 3 million and only a couple of years old and how you will "not find another one"... etc...

Sublime rare 1882 H newfoundland 2 dollar graded NGC AU58
The Newfoundland 2-dollar coin was issued in intermittent years between 1865 and 1888. It was the only circulation gold coin issued by a British colony. Although few coins were issued, it was broadly used in Newfoundland and eastern Canada. The coin became scarce in 1894 because of hoarding following the collapse of Newfoundland's banks and monetary system.

To update this thread, in terms of @Stuntman's suggestions of what Crowns to collect.
I clearly haven't the resources to purchase an example of a William IV Crown, and the Victoria Gothic Crown is one that I will need to dig deep for at some point in the future. I haven't decided if I want to backdate further, but I have started to piece together modern Crowns in terms of Coronation Anniversary and Jubilee issues.
Its been quite satisfying (and expensive) getting this far.  I have essentially bought the best within my budget- the minimum grade being EF/ GEF- but all with nice eye appeal and there are some Uncirculated Grades, including some lovely Proofs- 1902 Matte; 1927 Wreath; 1951, 1972 & 1977.  I have also 'duplicated' the 1937 in terms of having the Proof and an Uncirculated example.  I might well do this with other year dates.
The 1820 George III and the 1821 George IV along with the 1902 Edward VII Matte Proof, the 1927 George V Wreath and the 1960 Elizabeth II Prooflike are my top 5.

Here's where I am with the collection so far:

Capsule is shot so I’m after a new one if anyone has a spare one (wanted ad going up later)
