2020 Una and the Lion

My next question is does anyone know anyone who has sold a coin for more than list price?

@ShaolinStacker did the gold Una & Lion sale go through and the buyer pay for you OK for it ??

@Paul @sovereignsteve

Yes, sale went through. I ended up canceling the Ebay auction and flying to Munich Germany to deliver the coin for cash. After thoroughly reading the ebay and paypal policies. Neither of us felt safe going through either of them. Turns out the buyer is a member here on the forum, and was reading this thread as we were discussing it. Transaction went well... Other than upon landing in Munich. The buyer messaged me saying that "his partner backed out of the deal and he could only pay me $24,000 and a 2018 Netherlands Gold Lion dollar($2000 in my Estimate) $26,000 total(19,950 Pounds)" instead of the agreed $29000(22,255 Pounds). I was really upset, and felt taken advantage of a bit. As he promised me multiple times he already had the money. After travelling half way across the world I decided to give him the coin at the price. After Flight, Hotel, food, and 3 days missed work I ended up taking home about $23,000. Before leaving Germany I converted the $$ to 4x 100G gold bars and 7 Victoria Jubilee sovereigns. Came home and sold 1- 100 gram bar to pay the CC from purchasing the coin. All, and all worked out pretty well other than the last minute stiff on a few thousand. I figure that with the $750 I would have paid Ebay and the 4% I would have paid Paypal kinda broke even.(I'm guessing thats what the buyer was counting on as well)

Special thanks to @Paul @sovereignsteve @Oldun and all others for the advice. I've been selling on Ebay since 2004 and never new about the Paypal rules regarding buyer and seller protection on gold.

One lesson I think really needs to highlighted to all members here on the forum is that PAYPAL OFFERS NO PROTECTION TO BUYERS OR SELLERS FOR ANYTHING MADE OUT OF GOLD. Buyers obviously still have the ability to perform a charge back on their credit card, but I will be extremely careful in the future about selling anything Gold on Ebay. Something to think about.

Assuming there is a spider in the matchbox, we can talk a trade 😂

As for the big boy Una, that's a side of coin collecting that I'd rather stay away from.

Looking at his feedback none has been left as yet for the Una & Lion, despite all these sales through ebay, i can still only find one verified feedback and confirmed genuine feedback for a sale that a sale has gone through

What about compared to other sales of gold coins, like sovereigns? Is it usually different? Do they usually leave public feedback on the sales, have you checked to compare?

Given recent evidence (Una, Queen, SOTD & Brexit 50p) then I guess it’s possible to become an ‘accidental hero’ nowadays.

Pick up a Premium RM release-just because you like it- and then get caught up in this kind of shenanigans.

Not sure ratio of feedback that gets left these days, just picking out Una and lion, specifically as it coroborates and kind of certifies the deal was genuine and went through especially with our uncertainty of genuine bids, not shill bids. As so few have came to market, any genuine info is good info

Hhhmmmmm........ thats a bit cheeky in my opinion, especially only finding out once you landed/paid for flights etc.

Not the end of the the world i suppose, though since an agreeable deal was made but you arm is kind of forced by then to accept or you are out of pocket a few $1000 for flights/hotel etc no sale and still have coin

Word is your bond kind of a thing when you agree to a deal, well at least that is how I am .

Still a good postive sale, and good news a sale was made and money exchanged. A nice profit and some extra gold for your stack @ShaolinStacker

Nice as well, the forum has been useful in facilitating or maybe even influencing a deal, and international cross border deal at that !

Yeah it really pissed me off because I demanded $1000 up front to cover plane tickets in case he tried some thing like this. He swore and swore that there wouldn't be any issue. I land after a 14 hour flight to him saying "his partner backed out" even though  there was no mention of any partner up to this point.

But as you said not the end of the world, and still over all positive. He was a nice guy and all. So not going to out him by name or anything. Munich was a pretty awesome place to visit for the first time. I took a few days to explore. So got a nice mini vacation out of it.

Although you sold in the end, a deal was a deal and they buyer is 5k short.

Not impressed at all with the buyer especially after assuring you no problems will arise. Whether he was genuine about this 'partner' (personally I think BS) only he will know.

Still made good money but business is business and 5k is a lot of money. Glad you got the sale and shared this story. The lesson I have taken from here when selling anything would be to get a deposit in order to use as collateral.

Nice guy and all - gets you no where.

It's cut throat out there and it's every man for themselves.

Congrats on the sale and also I like the fact the sale was international and a trip was made out of it.

He did also end up throwing in a 2018 1oz gold proof Netherlands Lion Dollar (with a mintage of 200). Pretty rare coin with recent sales around the $2000 range not graded. So ended up about $3k short ( Still a nice chunk of change) but as you said lesson learned. Hopefully after grading the Lion will be worth 3-4k$ Range and even out a little bit more.

Oh slight damage limitation there, maybe my words are a bit harsh initially.

He should have been crystal clear before you made the flight saying I got X and Y will this do as a deal.

Waiting till you land in Munich and then giving you the news = punk.

Agree with Paul (safety) and that your safety and well-being is the most important aspect of this transaction. It's a good result.

Nah You were spot on. Speaking of safety he asked to meet me at my hotel. Instead of the agreed upon Major Bank Branch Lobby. I refused and changed my Whatsapp photo from a happy family picture. To one that shows that I'm a 6'1 250 pound (17.8 stone) Black Belt World Championship Level Judoka for team USA. Everything was smooth after that :) :) :) .
