Premise; i myself bought the Jubilee, Memorial and Coronation proof, along with the Sotd Coronation sovereign, and the 5 coins coronation set. I am a collector and i will not miss anything i like, as long as i can afford (and to be honest i reached my limit, like many others in the last couple years).
As a collector i buy with the clear intention not to re sell in a (near) future, nor i bother checking if a specific coin appreciates or doesn’t. Once is in the collection is in the collection.
But since the Memorial emission, and after all the comments i read here on the forum, i confess i started checking how these late sovereigns were performing on auctions, on dealers’ webistes etc etc etc.
Straight to the point; Memorial was just a wrong idea. It was something that was “forced” and screwed completely this delicate equilibrium; can you all imagine a world without the Memorial emission?
    Jubilee 2022
Coronation 2023 (with all sets, Sotd etc)
    St George 2024.
    Easy.
Now squeeze Memorial into that, and voilà, disaster. And i honestly dont understand when i read comments like “it will perform in the future, just hold and see etc etc”. No it will not. Where is the problem in admitting it is a failure of a coin, and up to now it has just been an economic loss? We cant predict future, but we can analyze past and present. The market is SATURATED by this coin. (i also dont personally like the adjusted version of the Coats of Army, but thats another story)
First big problem; there are thousands of PF70s. And thousands more will come as people will keep sending them to NGC or PCGS. Total population (considering also sets) is around 20k. Ok RM QC issues, but we are still talking about thousands and thousands of PF70 coins. What creates price is scarcity, and the Memorial will never be a scarce coin to find in highest grade (as well as Jubilee and Coronation for sure but, as said, its been the memorial that created this coin jam…)
Second big problem; people are just getting mad with this slab mania. Certification is not really something profitable (i mean, it is profitable indeed for those who make the slab) when applied to modern coins. One thing is (just to give an idea) having a Ms64 18whatever year sovereign. Another thing is holding a PF70 2020 or 2022 sovereign with other thousand people. On this forum, as in other fora i visit, people buy a coin and send it to slab even before receiving it! Or they receive it and check every single millimeter to find the smallest imperfection and then claim a substitution…. The collector in me cries…what about enjoying the coin first??
Too many coins, too many top pop slabs. How can you honestly think prices stay up?

I think the real problem is RM's release policy, and pricing policy.
We were surprised by the Memorial sovereign, but many bought it because it was the first KCIII portrait on a sovereign.  But then after buying the proof, the bullion version was released - so this detracted from the novelty of the proof version.
People rushed to buy the Coronation SOTD (understandably), but then the novelty of this release was immediately undermined with the proof Coronation version (with a massive mintage), and this was immediately undermined with the bullion release.
And this brings us onto the potential of a KCIII 75th Birthday SOTD sovereign - I will not be buying it even if the mintage is a fraction of that of the Coronation SOTD.  Within a month or two of such a release we will be due the 2024 proof sovereign.  And again I will not be buying it - a bullion 2024 sovereign will be enough for me.
When I started collecting 5 years ago, a proof sovereign was about £410 (2019 proof - and at the time this seemed expensive!).  We then had the leap to £800 for the Brexit SOTD, and the 2021 proof sovereign went up to £570.  The Memorial proof was about £695 and the Coronation SOTD was a record of £850.
So not only are we getting more releases but the prices have increased massively - at a time of a cost of living crisis.  As many collectors already have the coins they want from the last few years, the only way to move something on, is by being aggressive on price.

It's a big gamble, for those that are hoping Charles coins become more sought after in the future/after his death. I don't see it myself - he's currently at the height of his popularity from how I see it, absolutely not something I'd take a risk on.
Instead, I'll be buying as much bullion as I can (as I simply love stacking gold). The bullion coins I'll purchase will also have crowns on them too, making that feature common and undistinguished.

I regularly bid in auctions, but never bid live, always just leave an absentee bid for maximum I'm happy to pay, with fees factored in. I maybe only win 1 in 20,but I'm happy with that. 😁

When you list on eBay you can exclude this type of account by limiting the listing to users with a certain amount of positive feedback, I usually go for 50.  This seems to limit the chancers you get bidding.

what to me is really not acceptable is that RM keeps on hold buyers (like me) that bought directly to the RM itself on the very same release day, while other suppliers (like chards) got it back on stock now and (i guess) ready for IMMEDIATE delivery.
    (and 15 gbp cheaper)
for not talking about (this really matters to me) the totally screwed prioriry order. I ll get one of the last proofs, when i bought mine amongst the first
honestly what is the point in buying from the RM? more expensive and getting a random product, most probably minted amongst the last ones

I wonder whether the RM found itself contractually obliged to fulfil all its orders from its authorised distributors first, before it fulfils its direct orders from individuals like you and me.
Meaning that if you and I had ordered it from the likes of Chards, BBP etc - with a discount as well - we may well have received our coins some time ago.
It's really poor whichever way you look at it, especially since you can get the Memorial Bullion Sovereign coins before they have delivered all the proof and BU versions.
    Shame on them.

Yeah read your post, thought i'd chase up my single sov that i orders on November 15th. Got a auto response straight away.  Ridiculous that 83 days later i still don't have my order. They really have took advantage of the occasion when they had no ability to deliver on time, with the already backlogged production they have.
Thought i was put off buying proofs from the mint after the Gothic Portrait and Arms, this is really putting me off any future purchases.

I think you may be missing the point somewhat it is not the word free that is the issue.
If you stated a price that was the delivered to door price it would be faster and easier for your customers to quickly cross check against other dealers and if your prices were consistently a cpl of quid cheaper overall then the sale would be yours in most cases condition dependent.
Stop thinking about the word free we all know what it means in reality think of it more as:-
    Delivered To Door.
And maybe not use terms like suckers in a public forum that is solely used by your potential customers.

January not quite over yet and so far I've walked out of 2 shops and taken my trade else where and made one cashier take cash, Having refused to pay with a card.
The first shop was the local co-op. Not that busy a morning I grabbed a jug of milk, got to the till. only the new self-service tills operating. On my way back to the chiller to replace the milk The only member of staff asked if I was ok. Perfectly, I said. I'm just putting this milk back. With a puzzled look she asked why. I don't use the self-service tills. Oh she said, they are very easy to use. do you need me to show you. No thanks, I'll get it from the Spar across the road. Still with a puzzled look she asked me why. So I said. Two weeks ago when these were being fitted. Every one was told they were to help out at peak times. Today, your here on your own. Unable to man the tills. Its quite early and nowhere near a peak time. So there are reducing hours now for the staff here. Not only that but dear Mrs Jones that lives on her own can't have a chat now whilst being served. It may have been the only person she got to speak to today. Also I prefer to use cash. The Spar are quite happy to keep two members of staff on at all times and they don't continue to thrust the card machine in my face. I think I'll support them from now on.
Use cash at every opportunity you can and expect to be served. Use it or loose it.
