Yes, in light of the 20% VAT that dealers have to charge, the best place is here on the forum. You'll have to wait until they come up though or post a wanted ad. I have managed to pick them up for around spot +15~18%. If you do a search for platinum you'll be able to see previous listings. A paid membership would help you to see any deals as they are posted instead of having to wait 3 days.

We have had a bunch recently, all sold VAT free at about 20% over spot price.

I don't have any right now though.

Amazing price, not surprised you don't have any left 😜

I still struggle to see why the premium on secondhand platinum ( and also on new plus 20% VAT on top ) is so much higher than gold.
Ok there is less of a market but maybe that's why ?
I did find the European Mint very competitive for Pt pre-Brexit but when there was a global shortage prices shot up and have never returned to previous levels.

Yes - this forum is probably the best place in the UK right now and I have bought from here in the past.

@HarryKBest to create a wanted post in the UK sale section, I'm sure the someone is going to have a brit at decent price .

@Pete Yes EM had great prices, I remember the 2020 crash when they were selling 1oz for ~ 600 euros (good times) and after that 3 months  of out of stock

March 2020 - a short lived glitch / collapse in price.
I didn't know if it was real but luckily bagged a few coins, Eagles and Brits for around £580 delivered.
Took quite a while to arrive so I started to worry but all came good in the end.
Oh happy days !

Felt I had to own a couple of 1oz Platinum coins just to diversify the old portfolio. However, both are worth less now!

My 1st was the 2007 U.S. Eagle, when Platinum was worth more than gold. This was bought directly from the U.S. Mint. Eleven years later I bought the 1st Platinum 2018 Britannia from  the Royal Mint, grudgingly paying the VAT.

The photo shows how much better looking the 'Eagle' is with its clean matte finish. The Brit. with its reverse proof-like finish looks awful in comparison IMO. Thank goodness I have Gold.🤑

Yes, your Eagle does look much better than your Britannia.

Come on RM!

Where are the best places to buy these coins in the UK?

They are also sometimes in stock at my LCS!

I hear a whisper they will be back in stock next week, and platinum Beasts the week after.

Bad news is the VAT, unless you are happy to buy them for offshore storage in Switzerland.

I am still a bit miffed at the Royal Mint holding minting figures to the vest. Why, oh why, must it be a trade secret as to how many struck. I suppose in retrospect that this sort of thing has never been their forte really. Think about how mintage figures were off in years past in that we did (and even don't) know which dates were struck in the year's mintages or in more modern times with their "special" releases of delicacies like sets of Piefort platinum proofs that are not publicized, etc. (or my private peeve when it comes to foreign proof/specimen sets when the actual number struck and released to collector channels as opposed to the number authorised is either not known or not released).

Lawrence, might you have information as to mintages of the "bullion" issues? I seem to recall that there were authorised mintages of 5,000 each of the 2018 and 2019 Britannia platinum bullion issues....

I have no special relationship with the Royal Mint, so there is not reason for them to share commercial secrets with me when they don't share them anywhere else as a matter of policy.

I only know what gets published, and others often pick up on that before I do, plus what I can guess or work out.

Obviously, because of the VAT, platinum bullion coins are not big sellers in the UK or the EU. Interestingly, The RM had a full page advert in the Daily Telegraph recently (March 2022):

royalmintadvertintelegraph22-3-22crop.thumb.jpg.d925cde2496e5840ebec3f85f704fab3.jpg

I think the rate card for a similar advert is about £20K, so presumably the RM think there is a worthwhile UK market.

Without doubt, most of the RM production of platinum bullion coins must surely come from the USA, and the orient.

Any major European investors would buy and hold it offshore and legally avoid the VAT.

I do happen to know my LCS offers VAT free platinum Britannias and Beasts, loco Switzerland.

Avoiding VAT would pay for more than 30 years of storage fees, and secure storage almost certainly costs less than the insurance premium for storing at home, unless you happen to have a grade 10 vault, plus a similar grade of alarm and security system. Even then, it would probably be more cost effective to store them in a professional specialist vault unless you had more than about £100 million invested.

Your mate Barry might disagree with this statement. He believes you are RM Illuminati! :P

VAT free at about 20% over spot 🤣 . I remember there was some discussion a while back about adding VAT to gold in the UK. Thank goodness it never happened.

It did happen, from 1st April 1973 to 31st December 1999.

Where were you at the time?
