Sovereign Photo Thread...

(Should really post this in the photo technique section, rather than here.  Maybe move it, or ask a mod?)

The contrast ratio on that thing is insane.  You may want to start exporting as PNG instead of JPG, to show it off even more.

I would just under expose a tiny smidgen, as it's almost too bright.  Shows the surface texture really well.

As for the lighting, humans are used to perceiving light coming from above, whereas you have shadows on the top.  This makes it looks like the coins are concave.

Imaging edge gives me the option of JPEG or TIFF.  I've found a raw to DNG converter that might let me get the images into photoshop.  And, yes, I think the images look like they're a bit over exposed, but the histograms don't seem to reflect that.  Still trying to make sense of the software, although I have managed to calibrate it on a grey card and lock the colour balance settings.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

No, it doesn't look like you are clipping.  But there needs to be a natural balance of lighter to darker, and I think these are heavily towards the lighter end.

Yes, Adobe RAW should do it, if you don't have Lightroom.  Once you have it in PS, you may as well just use PSD as your storage format.

That's the beauty of LR.  You can keep things in Raw, and make adjustments that are reversible.  Once they hit PS, there's no going back.

It is a lot easier to get decent photos with this.

That's why they call it a camera.

And now bringing in some extra lighting to bring up the coin's lustre.  This is so much easier than with the phone camera.

A bit more exposure this time - 1958 Gillick taken with the ring light and incident lighting from about 10:30.  Also images saved at medium quality 800x800 pixels to save space - the files are less than 1/10 the size of the high quality ones.  This does a fairly good job of picking up the detail in Elizabeth's hair and wreath, something that isn't the easiest thing to do with Gillicks.
