Different lighting From a pic that I got by happenstance last year, right at the beginning of my experiments, I've figured out how to get the same lighting by design.  These make the sovs look the most like gold, and really show off the lustre.  What's going on here is panel lights reflected from below onto a sort of umbrella reflector I made from cardboard and aluminium foil.  There's light from the sides as well as more or less axial.  I also put some squares of black paper in the middle to make a dark spot that reflects off the coin, which shows off the lustre a bit more. This works best when the original finish is still intact on most of the coin, as the more worn young vic at the bottom right shows. Click on the photos to zoom in.

Lovely coins and photos... A photo of the setup might be a good idea if it's different to what you've shown in the past? 🤔

The camera shoots through the hole in the reflector, and I've taped a bit of black paper to make a bigger dark patch to reflect on the coins - this does emphasize the lustre and the lighting can be too flat without it.  The stage is just a bit of black paper taped to a coin tube and the whole lot is propped up on my high tech stand made from copies of Marsh and Spink.  These were selected as hard cover books lie flatter than paperbacks.

The reflector is just made from aluminium foil glued to cardboard and held together with sellotape and PVA glue.

Out of the frame is a Neewer reflector clamp (really designed for much bigger reflectors) and a tripod.

Think of an operating theatre in Chicago medical ( TV show) then multiply by 10 😆

It's just foil glued onto cardboard and taped and glued together.  Not exactly high tech, really kiddie arts-and-crafts level.  What it does achieve is to get some light coming in from the sides of the coin and highlighting the lustre of the finish.  Even with worn sovs it does make the gold look like gold.

I have just looked more carefully, it is quite small. I thought it was massive. If it was, that silver bar would be spectacular 🌞

And now, substituting in some spots to get more specular reflection, which does an even better job of bringing out the lustre.

This one is - it's really just a rig to take pics of small sov-sized coins.  At some point I'll make up a bigger one and do another shot of a pile of sovs like I did the other day.  The silver bar is just a 100g pocket piece.  Maybe I'll get some 1kg bars at some point.

Here's a pic of the reflector by itself.  You can see the little squares of black paper to break up the light and make for a bit of variation in the background.  This helps with contrast - the detail in the Gillick portrait's hair comes out much better with these.
