I think it may have had something to do with the fact the Coronation saw the biggest take up of the television in the nation's history. Everyone who could watched the broadcast, so the Coronation (and Crown) took on an extra significance in the minds of the public. Also the first queen since Victoria, so as you say there's a certain symmetry there.
<edit> Also very important, politically there was the Empire to consider.

Usually for UK portraits the monarch has been uncrowned since the 1662 move to machine made coinage. The only exceptions are Victoria and Elizabeth. Quite who decides though I have no idea.
Crowned portraits were usually reserved for colonial coinages.

I was lucky enough to obtain one of the pattern piedfort sovereign sets and it is beautiful. Shame that it has to sit in my bank safe deposit box due to the value.

They'll probably make it look like he's been beheaded, can't see a crowned portrait to be honest.

Yes, he put a warning on this coin, always worth keeping an eye on his site and/or asking him what a certain release is like, if in doubt

I bought the piedfort. Really excited about this coin! I am a sucker for anything piedfort. If the Mint were to indicate that Anne Jessop is piedfort, I'd buy her too!

Tried two more times to checkout with the 5 sov, seems to be having a wobble, wondering if they have sold out but the front end has not updated for some reason
I was kind of 50/50 on this anyway so will take that as a sign

It’s not bullion though. It’s essentially a matte proof.

As we are about to celebrate the Queen's Platinum (70th) Jubilee, I thought we should look at a few coins from 1952:
1952 South Africa Gold Half Pond
Obverse of 1952 George VI Cupro-Nickel Sixpence
Obverse of 1952 Eire Penny
Reverse of 1952 Eire Penny
Eire 8 Coin Circulation Set Pre-Decimal Reverse Designs
What else has anyone got from 1952?
😎

They will have to find a new Sovereign reverse design, as he surely won't want St George riding his wife on it...

I find the privy marks don't show up as well on sovereigns as other coins, purely because the coins are tiny in the first place and I have to really squint my eyes to see them.
Even though I'm not a big fan of the Royal Mint churning out a marginally different proof sovereign design each year I can easily see the intrinsic gold value going up so much in the next 10 years that it would comfortably pay off any premiums the Royal Mint is currently placing on them.

Charles doesn't deserve to get his face on the full sov, 1/2 sov at best cos he ain't the full quid.....😛

Not sure if it will affect many things monetarily, but it will certainly be a moment of historic significance. I'm currently looking to collect a set of 10oz silver Tudor Beasts so it's quite likely the set will have a change of monarch in the middle of it. It could well be that this makes the set more collectible to others in the future as it captures this transition.

You are totally right there is next to no perceivable difference between some 69's and a 70's.
