1952 - The Queen's Accession Year - Coin Examples

Recommended Posts

As we are about to celebrate the Queen's Platinum (70th) Jubilee, I thought we should look at a few coins from 1952:

1371?

What's that doing here?

Morocco uses an Islamic Hijri calendar system, so the date 1371 corresponds to 1952 in the western Gregorian calendar.

Although, if I am correct, 1971 started on the 2nd October 1951, and ran until 20th September 1952.

Let me know if I got it wrong!

@LawrenceChardYou might be a year out Lawrence.  I have a similar coin in my penny box to that one although it's not Morrocan.  I'm not altogether sure which Arab country it's from in fact, but it has the dating system based on both calenders and shows 1960 to correspond to 1380, so following the logic your coin would be a 1951 coin (I think)...🤔

Although....if the Hijri calendar year starts in October, you might well be correct depending on which month the coin was minted...😬

Your coin is a Tunisian 100 Millièmes.

The coin I showed has a 75% approximately chance of being 1952, and also corresponds more closely with 1952 than with 1951, athough there could be an argument for calling it 1951, as that was the start date.

Yes I realised that when I noted that the calendar starts in October, so there's a higher probability that it is indeed a 1952 vintage rather than a 1951...

BTW, do you know which year they switched over from Francs to Dirhams in Morrocco?   All I can add to that is that it must have been pre 1983 as that was the year I paid my one and only visit to that country and they had Dirhams then...

Wikipedia is often a good source for quick information, although it is not always right:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moroccan_dirham

When most of Morocco became a French protectorate in 1912 it switched to the Moroccan franc. The dirham was reintroduced on 16 October 1960. It replaced the franc as the major unit of currency but, until 1974, the franc continued to circulate, with 1 dirham = 100 francs. In 1974, the centime replaced the franc.

So there is a choice of answers:

Before 1912

1960

1974

Take your pick!

Oh, and here is a roll of the 1371 / 1952 Moroccan 50 Francs:

All nice and minty!

* Mints often used to roll coins, and these look like they were hand-rolled (sounds like a tobacco product).

No plastic tubes in those days!

Some secondary market boxed coins and sets we buy in smell very strongly of tobacco smoke. We used to story the worst ones in a separate room until the worst of the small faded, which could take 6 months or longer.

After the first few times, we started paying less for smoky coins.

These were OK.😎

I bought a gold Albert chain a few years ago that stunk to high heaven of damp and stale tobacco. I have to say, I gave it a wash in soap and water soon after opening the package.

Whilst washing is acceptable for jewellery, can't do this for coins though, without destroying the value completely.

Some coins can be cleaned, with care. An ultrasonic tank is good.

Superb sets from LC and Roy. Reminded me of the days when Bob Ilsley of Dolphln Coins used to deal in sets like this, especially  from the S.A.M.

OK, Second poorest then!   I am now saving up for a 1/10th oz Britannia, but can probably stretch to some 2nd hand clothes for your scarecrow…😎
