JJH got a reaction from Chrisplym in MATTE? PROOF?
Haha, I started my coin collection in the past two years. I don’t have a lot of gb coins. I have a set of 2017 britannia positive and negative refined silver coins(😢However, due to the severe wear and tear of many FORST parts, I really rarely show them for viewing.
). I started directly with 1989😂. At present, I put 5sov somewhere else and sealed it and only have 2sov in my hand, but the phone is not great. I got 1/2sov from another place last month, but I haven’t got it yet. I’m planning to use it later. Exchange matte and the rest is Japanese gold coins and nothing else
I also hope that more people will share what they understand has enabled me to go deeper

Let's keep this thread alive and as speculation increases we can track here. I'd love just best guesses at this point... who's the next best engraver after Mr. Wyon?

JJH reacted to dicker in 1989 half sov
It’s a horses for courses thing. I used to like 1989 Sovs but personally, I would much much rather have a high “grade”Shield Sovereign or Type II Sydney Sovereign.
I think the 1989’s are a solid buy, but I don’t buy graded coins, and see the real gems in Sovereign minted in the Victorian era or earlier.

JJH reacted to Britannia47 in 1989 half sov
Found some interesting figures for the 1989 mintage/cost figures on a visit to the RM in 1998. The '89 half sov. was selling for £79.95 ex 10,000. By 1998 the price was £84.00 ex 7,500 a very small increase over 9 years. Full Sovereigns, including the 1989 were selling for £149 from 1983 to 1998 (15 years!) My first proof sovereign in 1997 was also £149 but to me that seemed expensive compared to £50 for a bullion sovereign and about £75 for a shield back. I believe the gold price had been very stable over this period at about $325 or so. Lastly, the full set was selling at £1150 with a mintage of 5000. However the secondary market was much lower. I paid £850 for the 4 coin set in 1997 which was the going price apparently. Lucky me perhaps! What is unusual, as already noted, is that the 1989 full sovereign is now more valuable than the double sovereign! Anyway here's a photo of the 4 coin set for reference.....

JJH reacted to SidS in Q.V. Reverse Shield or George V sovereign?
Victorian shield sovereigns all the way for me.
Regarding withdrawal of sovereigns, I don't think there is a definitive answer. The facts I know:
1) The government stopped paying them out after August 1914 and issued Treasury notes instead.
2) The government began the propaganda campaign to donate sovereigns for the war effort, using posters etc.
3) I assume banks would collect in any sovereigns paid in and send them back to the treasury. Banks would no longer pay out gold coins.
4) Theoretically gold coins could still circulate freely amongst the population, and shops could still accept them, but if paid into the bank they'd disappear from circulation.
5) At some point in around early 30s gold companies/jewellers were offering more than face value for sovereigns... Which is strongly indicative that they were not current.
6) In Australia, sovereigns and halves remained in circulation until around 1931/2 - as evidenced by their banknotes stating that they were redeemable for gold (much like US gold certs).
7) South Africa may have seen gold until around 1932 as well, not sure how prevalent though.

JJH reacted to richatthecroft in 2022 Sovereign design revealed?
I realise the herd has moved on to the Gothic release- but for anyone who continues to follow the beloved Sovereign here's something that you might be interested in:
I did this exercise initially on the 20/11/2021 and last on the 29/11/2021 (results below at the very bottom of this post) and updated today Saturday 11/12/2022, I've repeated it - so you don't have to!
Using the search term '2022 Sovereign' on eBay on Saturday 11/12/2021:
Significantly- there are still surprisingly few, in terms of the amount of 2022 Sovereign issues for sale (all denominations and sets). The figure of live sales on eBay has doubled since I last completed the exercise there are currently 83 sales posts (Previously 41) using the search term described above.
5 Coin set- 5 Sales ranging between £5795 through £6995- Average sale price- £6348- NO FURTHER SALES
4 Coin Set- 2 Sales ranging between £3250 through £3750- Average sale price- £3500- NO FURTHER SALES
3 Coin set- 4 further Sales- (previously 7 Sales) ranging between £1249 through £1500- Average sale price on 4 sales is down- £1337 (previous average £1391 on 7 sales)
Sovereign- 17 further Sales- (previously 27) ranging between £675 through £799- Average sale price on 17 sales is down- £737- (previous average £762 27 on 17 sales)
Half Sovereign- 11 further Sales- (previously 13) ranging between £369 through £424- Average sale price on 11 sales slightly down to - £408 (previously average £416 on 13 sales)
Sovereign/ Half Sovereign combo- 1 Sale at £1300 NO FURTHER SALES
Not a scientific or absolutely accurate view of how the 2022 Sovereign is progressing, but I'm sure those invested in them will be encouraged by this Special Release's performance.
Previous data 29/11/2021:

JJH reacted to westminstrel in 2022 Strike on the Day Sovereign information
King George VI died on February 6 1952 and therefore that was the day of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. So 2022 is the Platinum Jubilee Year of Accession.
The Coronation was a year later on June 2 1953. So 2023 will be the Platinum Jubilee Year of Coronation.

JJH reacted to LawrenceChard in Red v Yellow Colour Gold Sovereigns - Silver v Copper Alloy Content
I don't remember that particular post, so if you come across it I will take another look.
In case you missed it, I posted a 1968 sovereign test a few days ago, with 4 ppt of silver:
I see you are Taiwan, so English might not be your first language, but coins are stamped (struck) using dies not molds.
The Royal Mint make some gold proof versions of commemorative coins, gold sovereigns with multiples and fractions, gold Britannias, and other gold bullion coins in various weights. We can presume that production continues throughout the year, so blanks will be made or sourced in various batches through the year, which makes it very likely that the exact alloy content may vary, apart from the fact that some of the coins are fine gold rather than 22ct.
I am currently writing a new article about the colour of gold coins, including gold sovereigns.

JJH reacted to SilverStorm in NGC Graded Coins in Registry Sets
One function is to recognize the legitimacy of a slabbed coin. For example, fraudsters pump out slabbed coins with fake NGC registration numbers. By going online and checking the NGC registry, you will be able to determine if the slabbed coin you bought is legitimate or fake. if the slabbed sticker matches the description on the registry, you will have peace of mind that all is well.
On a side note, I have 2 slabs on NGC registry (one of which I have posted on the silver sub-forum regarding my 2021 super incuse silver maple leaf).

JJH reacted to Jers in 1989 5sovereign or 4coin set
Hi
Just a comment. The 5 coin sets did not really start until the quarter sovereign was produced in 2009. Not sure about the "70" grading as the coins in the set are proof and in my case not touched by anyone except the person who put them in the set at the Royal Mint. As far as 2017 is concerned, the 5 coin set sold out in 2 hours and will probably cost more than the 1989 set. Another low mintage
Hope that helps
Regards
Jers

i cant agree more, always has the "final" Fortunately, I bought a similar design before, but it was designed and issued by the British Isles, but the guardian beast is the symbol of British royal power rather than the queen. After all, the monarch will change over time, but the royal symbol will not change.

Ok ebay just sell one set for 5225GBP it describe only a slight tarnish on the half sovereign .i think it can be a new price location
-
JJH reacted to GoodAsGold in 1989 5sovereign or 4coin set
That was my viewpoint when I started collecting coins, but I can see both arguments. I think I will get any gold coins (that I go on to sell) graded first. That removes any potential dispute between buyer and seller as to the condition of the coin, because it’s already been graded by a professional company.
I know you buy and sell a lot of coins, including graded ones, so I guess that your business is purely business and nothing to do with your personal opinion. Would it be fair to say that your graded coins sell for more money than raw ones, or is it solely down to what coin you’re selling (graded or raw) and the price being right of course?

JJH reacted to GoodAsGold in 1989 5sovereign or 4coin set
Good condition ones must be hard to find then? That’s why they sell for a lot of money I suppose, when they come up for sale.

JJH reacted to GoodAsGold in 1989 5sovereign or 4coin set
Thanks for letting me know the prices. It gives me a baseline to go on should I grade mine. I’m not sure how much the bullion price would have on special design year numismatic coins, but I think 69 grades at best must be normal for proofs over 30 years old. I would pay extra for conservation in the hope of achieving a 70 with one of them.

JJH reacted to Gypsy in 1989 5sovereign or 4coin set
Iv had many coins graded but ultimately I feel raw coins have a different presence about them. I think there is to much hype around graded coins. Best to keep them raw and boxed.
