Can’t see the vat problem being as draconian as talked about.   At the moment we don’t pay vat on items under £15 odd from rest of world so why would it start from the eu now.... if it does will also be levied on the rest of the world.     Also if anyone goes on holiday they in theory would have to pay vat on everything they buy while on holiday that they bring home.   Just can’t see that happening.
Plenty of other things to worry about before this

No email,  still in process on website no response.     They used to be worth the poor service because they were a lot cheaper.  Not the case now as fair few places that are cheaper and the €100 minimum order isn’t any good for small orders

Arms stocks will get a boost when Biden takes over. Judging by his transition team a certain country will get their wars which Trump wouldn’t start.

Arms stocks are where I draw the line because if I’m doing well then villages in Yemen and Syria won’t be.

There is a joke that an investor is just a successful speculator. The joke can only be true if you confuse gambling with investing, in which case, jokes on you. Say you put £10,000 into opening a business in a product you are sure will do well, that business goes on to make £20,000 - was it a successful gamble? Or was it an investment? Which best describes it. The same process is happening when you buy into a company on the stock market for the same reasons, the share price is the price of entry. Do you want to pay more to set up the business/position due to a high share price? Or would you rather pay less to set up? Keep the ideas about gambling and investing separate, as they are not the same thing. If you are trading solely on a share price movement then you can say you are speculating/gambling, because as we have seen over 2020 the short term movement of share prices often have little to do with either the long or short term realities and prospects of the business or the economy.
You are right to lose faith in commentators, just use them for information and then you don't need to work out what angle they are working because its then irrelevant to you. Personally I share what I am doing here and elsewhere to hold myself to account and test my ideas out. I think perhaps some of the commentators I follow do that as well, but who cares, I am only listening not really following despite the social media terminology. Perhaps there isn't much difference.
Parts of the market, especially the US market are overvalued by many metrics, other markets such as the FTSE are not. Look at the difference between what is in the NASDAQ and what is in the FTSE 100 as an example of where the money is going. FTSE 100 is heavy into materials, mining, oil, etc. US markets have trimmed oil and gas in some cases (was it the DOW that cut oil and gas? I forget). We may get a crash like March, we might instead get a rotation into value and materials, we may get the big one like 2007 or 2000. Who knows. There are a lot of people in on the reflation trade right now from what I am reading, it is quite possible we will see a good shake out of the weak hands before things turn around next year. In the case of the oil price, the lower it goes now, the higher it goes later.

Personally I think you made a good investment, with the correct coins you just sold them badly.      When you see them on Atkinson’s (that’s if they down already have a buyer lined up) you will see this.
cant remember members name but he was after 10 of each queens beasts and was paying very good money for them.      Rather than coming on here saying that it was a mistake buying after you sold, you should have come on before you sold and asked advice

Cornishfarmer reacted to silenceissilver in Sigma Metalytics - the one test to rule them all?
    1) No
    2) I have bought the pro version because it measures all the way through the coins (small bars), the non pro version only so deep, I can't remember, maybe a quarter mm?
    3) It is, however I managed to overlook the attached calibration disc (for the calibration of thickness) for a long time. Sometimes I'm annoyed it does work properly only with one of the two sensors, depending on the size of the coin. Thus, small coins don't always work properly under the bigger sensor but mostly that was due to the fact that I didn't have it calibrated for too long, I guess. Why does this matter? With the pro, there are two sensors at each sensor, one internal one and one above the coin, building a bridge around it, and the space for the smaller sensor is not big enough for capsules or holders.
    4) Yes. The smallest coin I have is just over a tenth of an ounce,  a 10 Corona coin, the biggest ones one ounce (gold)/two ounces (silver), both work. The one ounce coins under the bigger sensor, the rest under the smaller one.
    5) Yes
    6) I only have the Sigma, so I can't compare it from own experience but there is gold analytics. Also see this thread about it:
I'm in the UK too, I had it imported from the US. It was sitting at customs for several weeks, that was quite annoying but it can also go through much quicker. It's a lottery with customs.
There is also a Slovenian site, selling it, too. As far as I know that's it for Europe, unless you buy a used one privately on Ebay or wherever. Personally, I try and avoid second hand electronics.
What else? There is a so-called bridge, a kind af attached very big sensor, for big bars. I don't need it, I have not bought it. Even for my silver, my biggest piece is two ounces, I'm not a PM bar guy.
Would I buy it again? Yes, no question
Why did I buy it in the first place? My very first gold coin was a fake (plated), I found out before I bought the Sigma, but it was a pain in the butt, specific gravity test, no certainty because of a lack of reference at the time, etc. Also I got tired of doing a specific gravity test for every new sovereign or other coin. Plus by now I have acutally once tried a specific gravity test again and it very much seems my cheap scale would need to be recalibrated but as it's cheap, you can't do it properly, just pushing a button on zeroing it doesn't seem to do the job properly.
Upper bar: The outer layer (you only have this one a the non pro version)
Lower bar: Measured all the way through.
    Green: No fake
Orange: Questionable (you don't really get this, it's green or red in practice)
    Red: Fake
What else: Measuring the dimensions - I have never bothered to do this with the Sigma

I don’t see why the royal mint have gone down the route of 999 silver.     If they went back to sterling they wouldn’t spot and would be harder and not mark so easily.    All they would have to do is buy different blanks

Wait for £1 on eBay, but on for £1500.   See how it goes.   If no takers go coin cabinet.   I didn’t go for the Una because was worried about a great coin spotting.   If I was holding a pf70 I’d be selling because one spot could knock £600 off.    And being royal mint it probably will arrive sooner or later

The so called 'price' is the paper price. The paper price can go anywhere - it is created inside computers - not dug out of a mine and poured in a refinery like real silver is.
So the paper price falls - supposedly because buyers don't want silver, except in the real world when price takes a dive, real people are all over gold and silver like a bad rash. Physical buying goes up.
Dealers in the face of increased orders and quite likely stock on their books at a higher price, they don't drop their prices the amount you might expect. Then with this virus thing we have had closures of mines, mints and refineries. This means production all but stops so the dealers run out at the very time demand goes through the roof. This is all a recipe for high premiums and waiting lists - exactly what we have seen.
What i have noticed on the forum and especially in gold, is that when the price of gold went up before the virus thing kicked off, i see the premiums fall - you would see members selling at or just above spot in gold. Premiums in silver were lower and certainly much lower than we see on the forum and at dealers at the moment. From a percentage point of view i would expect gold and silver to be better value the higher the spot prices rise.
Consider this (forgetting taxes) - the amount it costs to design and make dies, to mint coins, to pack and distribute them - it won't be any different between a £2800 2 oz gold coin and the average 2 oz silver Queen's Beast - so as a percentage of the total cost of the coins, the cost of creating a silver coin is much higher - similarly the dealer's mark up will likely be in percentage terms higher. If silver is $16 spot, coin might be $20 ex-VAT (25% above spot), if silver went up to $50 an ounce the ex-VAT might be $55 (10% above spot). If silver went to $500, the ex-VAT might be $510. The higher the price, the lower the premium.
