1887 Jub head half sovereign, nicest condition half sov i have right now

It looks like a I.E.B variety to me, considerably more rare? I'd like some opinions here as i don't yet have Marsh's half sov book, and google returns a little info but more on the Sydney variety of which there are only 3 examples of this

Nice half, aEF IMO. There are several versions of the 1887 and the literature isn't too helpful. Marsh describes them all but doesn't give an indication of rarity or value. Spink gives prices but not for all variations.

Yours is the normal sized JEB with loop of J missing and a high shield, probably one of the most common types. Note the JEB letters not in line, occurs with this type. Also the colon after DEF is slightly slanting inwards, this only occurs in the 1887 but the rarity of different combinations is unclear.

The ones with small JEB are probably the rarest, two types; letters together and spread.

Thanks for this, yes it is hard to find info. Do you have any pics of what an IEB should look like at this kind of resolution? I can only find really bad ones and they just look like mine. I need to take some fully focused on the J/I St some point I think

Regarding the high shield, I thought you said when I posted the others that the high shield was scarcer than the low? Or is that dependant on date

Not sure why you would want a photo, yours is perfectly good. If it's to compare, I can have a search around or it might be better if I dig mine out and photograph them, I've got several.

Dependant on date. Were we talking about the 1892 before? The 1887 is in a league of it's own re: variations.

Just trying to see what an IEB does look like, if you say this is no one :)

Yea the others were 1892. I'll get some books for half's I think

No I'm not saying that, yours is an IEB if that's what you want to call it, although it's not generally referred to as such, but as an imperfect J

Ah with you! Everywhere I googled about the types it was called IEB so just went with it :)

Understandably people type what the letters look like, so maybe that's how new names and vocabulary start.

Nobody really knows whether a I punch was used instead of a J or whether it's the result of a faulty master die or whatever.

Lots of them about though.

Marsh refers to them as "imperfect J" and Spink doesn't differentiate them from "normal JEB large".

Wow, nice coin!

That will look great in your Sovereign collection :)

I don't blame you for not selling it, it's a keeper :)
