  1. I started because i have always been interested in metals and history. I combined the two in the world of coins. It intrigues me that I can buy and hold a coin that has been minted a couple hundred years ago without any problem. Premiums of bullion coins are just a small price to pay for the historic value the coin holds imo. I came across some of @BackyardBullion's video's about coins, investment and also his own silver pouring. After joining the forum and ordering BYB's forumbars he was also kind enough to pour my own design on commission. On arrival of the poured bars i remember that that was the exact moment i was hooked on PM's and coins. I did buy some silver coins, but those were not the historic coins I set out to find, and the premium on silver kinda killed the deal on them so i decided to skip silver for now and focus on gold.

I started buying full gold sovereigns thanks to @SVcollector. It still amazes me that someone in 1842 bought and held the exact coin I bought and hold now. They still are my most precious coins I own, even the rotten dirty bullion ones with dark black marker pen on them.

Sovereigns are small, so I decided also to compensated that by buying more chunky gold coins like the Mexican 50 pesos and the Peruvian 100 Soles. Those are just investment to be honest, and I would have never bought them if I wasn't offered to buy one to be honest. I am glad that I did, the weight of those coins are just amazing. And you can play and fumble around with them, just like the bullion sovereigns. The design of the 50 Pesos (Centenario) let me right in the arms of the Winged Victoria on the 1oz gold Libertad. It was just love on first sight! I soon welcomed some Libertad in my life and even bought the ridiculously expensive 1oz gold 2018, 2019 and 2020 Reverse proofs from my main (and only) Libertad dealer @muenzdachs. (Out with my low premium intentions!)

That transformed me from a bullion stacker to a collector I guess. Now I like to find beautiful coins with a good story behind them. Like 8 reales silver pillar dollars or Dutch 14 gulden gouden rijders. But don't get me wrong, it is sovereigns for me always and ever!

History and precious metals combined, who can say no to that?

And that's where I am at right now.

    Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say hello - pretty much a brand new starter to the world of precious metals.

Found this place thanks to watching a few videos from the YouTube channel Backyard Bullion.

Picked up my first 1oz silver coin just before this weekend and looking to continue the adventure from there 😊

    Thanks,

    Taf

Welcome to the Silverforum! I think we all love BYB's video's :)

    Hello everyone,

    I'm Eddy from the Netherlands.

I only recently started to stack silver since the beginning of this year.

My main reason to invest in this precious metal is to save up for my retirement.

But along the way a got amazed by the beautiful designs and shapes that are available.

Its like I discovered a new form of fine art.

I cant help but wanting to collect the many beautiful designs that come out.

So I decided to join this forum to educate myself and to have the opportunity to come in contact with people who also love this shiny beautiful precious metal.

    Greeting from The Netherlands,

Hi Eddy, Welkom op het forum! Goed om weer een Nederlander op het Silverforum te zien!

Hi Eddy, Welcome to the forum! Always good to see another Ducthy on the Silverforum!

    Good evening everybody,

I would like to take a minute and introduce myself.

I am a new stacker as well as an "old" stacker 😉.

I started buying some silver (and a minuscule amount of gold) in 2014 and was all into it. Watching videos on You Tube. Reading a lot, etc.

Due to some personal crisis I wasn't able to buy anymore. Also my wife didn't appreciate my small collection as much as I did, so this made it also difficult.

Years went by and I still was interested into coins, silver and gold, but didn't buy anything.

Recently I picked up this "hobby" and am all back into it 😀

Hope to enjoy everybody's thoughts, comments and videos.

All the best from The Netherlands and keep safe!

Hi, I'm Jerry - new to the community, long time collector.

My passion is coin photography and I'm looking forward to spreading some joy with some nice photos that I've been taking recently. Really looking forward to connecting with anyone else who appreciates beautiful coin craftmanship as much as I do :)

Hi Jerry, welcome to the forum. I would love to know how to photograph coins as I struggle with light and reflections (obviously in PM).

    Cheers!

Hi all, my name's Matt and I'm new here. Previously bought some silver on eBay like a pleb, but hey ho, gotta grow up some day! Excited to buy some gold and silver on here as prices here look decent. Want to accumulate enough precious metal overtime so that I can masquerade as a nuanced investor to my family, when I'm secretly only doing it for the aesthetically-pleasing shiny stack that I hope to create over time like a deranged magpie-pirate

With all due seriousness though, if anyone is selling 10g, 20g, 50g, or half an ounce of gold (or a 1 kg of silver) at basically spot price, then please gimme a shout - I'm happy to drive over to you if not too far, or discuss how best to deliver if not (I'm based in Poole, Dorset)

Look forward to speaking to you all

    All the best

    Matt

    Hi Guys

I've been stacking silver for years, but since Brexit and no VAT free way of legally acquiring I've stopped (apart from a kilo Queens Beast which I couldn't resist).

I now have some money burning a hole, so thinking a few ounces of gold. What gold though? Thinking Krugers (as everybody knows what they are so are easily sellable), I do like the Maple - it looks real pretty, also thinking Queens Beast as coin collectors might drive prices up down the line? Or should I go Sovs?

CGT isn't a consideration as far as I'm concerned, running rings around HMRC is a specialist subject of mine!

So what shiny stuff would you steer a gold newbie to?

    Thanks in advance!

Def Sovs, there is so much to learn about them. Tons of books and info on them. And best of all, the sovereigns can be bought fairly cheap with low premiums like @dicker already posted. In other words: You can collect and stack them for many many many years to come. And they are easy to sell.

I also collect dutch gold guilders for the reasons @KevinFlynn mentioned.

And I just like the design of guilders and sovs and their smooth shiny glow. ;)

    Plus perhaps another 30 raw.

These are mostly Mostly Queen Elizabeth II 1957-1970s plus a dozen Queen Victoria old heads...

Welcome to the forum! And a good stack to begin stacking with if you ask me :)

0:57. The ping tester, what a job. Making sure there's no flaws by putting rim dings in the coins 🤯

Is it fair to say that sovereigns without rim dings are not properly tested and therefor can be potentially fakes? ;)

Hi Guys. I am a new member from the UK looking to stack silver for the future and diversify my savings. lets face it fiat is trash...... and I'm not just talking about the cars :)

Welcome to the forum! Happy stacking!

Edit: And remember, silver is the gateway metal to gold!

Thanks seems way to much hassle and not beneficial for the buyer to buy from the uk.  Free trade is getting harder!

Indeed, since Brexit shipping from UK to Europe (and vice versa) is ridiculous. But i always take the risk shipping without insurance and it never failed. I wouldn't recommend it though, that is just my personal choice.

    Hi

i am looking to send 35oz of silver from the uk to netherlands via PO and have never posted to the EU.  does anyone know whether you can insure up to 1k, postage cost and if the other person would have to pay vat, i imagine this would depend on their local rules?

    thanks

    @Auggie

They wil examine all packages from the UK. So be ready for the importcharges plus tax. They charge me every time I import gold sovereigns and it takes ages to get my import tax refunded. In case of silver you have to pay importcharges and tax though. The dutch customs are relentless. Royal Mail wil hand over they package to dutch mail and they won't insure PM's. You can take the risk (I done that many times) But your best bet is to go with a courier imo. Read the fine print on their T&C's though many exclude PM's. I even was sent gold from abroad (within the EU) by a courier and on examining the package at customs they sent the package straight back to the sender and charging him for the cost because they wouldn't carry PM's.
