    …..BREAKING NEWS…..

In an unprecedented step, the Welsh First Minister has just announced that all clocks in Wales (especially SheepStacker’s) are to be turned back by 1 hour tonight for reasons not yet specified. Apple will automatically adjust its own devices as usual. The sole exception to this ruling will be the Royal Mint as I’ve just remembered it’s in Wales too 😁

Could be both the version of 2022 sovereign in one box?

That thought did quickly cross my mind, but the Platinum Jubilee sovereign was a sell-out. Perhaps they could always strike some more for a 2 box set but I don’t think that would be fair play to everyone who had to pay significantly more for them on the secondary market. I guess we’ll find out soon.

Clearly the next smart move by the mint would be to make a Harry Potter sovereign.

Suggest that to Hattons Of London. They stick the word “sovereign” on the end of a lot of their gold coin releases (presumably to attract unsuspecting first time buyers who think they’re getting Royal Mint sovereigns). They have a Her Majesty’s Graces sovereign series. Maybe the engravers initials are TAT.

I don't think you can compare the sovereign to a Harry Potter collector coin...... there is just no comparison full stop. These new sovereigns will be a hot win for the mint and if there's anything left after 24hrs I'll eat my hat.

I hope it tastes like chocolate 😁

The Potter coins transends numistica. Traditional coincollectors may not be a fan and some might sight see its gimmicky but not the fans. Listing here does not represent the wider population. We are small pool of people really.

Totally disagree. Your argument should be that the Potter book series has a vast worldwide fan base larger than the amount of people who collect coins. The Potter coins do not transcend anything as the sales figures you quoted prove. What you imply suggests an ignorance of numismatics in my opinion.

I'm pretty confident the sovereign with 17,000 edition size won't get sold out for weeks if everyone is restricted to 3 per household and allocation to dealers are very limited. The Harry Potter 15,000 colour proofs are a lot more affordable and its popularity transends numismatic but still not sold out after 3 weeks. The Royal Mint probably has a record of how many buyers of their coins and coin types and constantly adjust its mintage figures to  maximise profits. I would guess there is a hardcore but small community that would buy all, then another bigger group that buys the odd ones. In the wider world our hobby would be met with a bit of amusement and as an extravagence by the average Joe.

So the Harry Potter coins are still not sold out after 3 weeks?  That only tells me that the majority of Harry Potter fans prefer books to coins. You cannot make sales comparisons between a novelty coin minted in a blip of time in Royal Mint history and the Sovereign which was introduced in 1489. Would a similar sales scenario be the case in book stores if JK Rowling brought out another Harry Potter book? Absolutely not.

My daughter was such an avid Harry Potter book  reader that she was annoyed after seeing the first film and seeing what content was cut out of the book. I don’t think she watched many more. She owns 2 first edition books yet when she saw the coins she laughed. Kiddy fodder. That says it all in my opinion.

If the design is correct I agree with others that it is much better than the Platinum Jubilee one. I wasn’t over keen on that design but love this one.

I wasn’t keen on the first 2022 sov design either and decided not to participate. First impression was it resembled a design on one of the old pound coins. I only revisited it very recently and I changed my mind about the design and took the plunge - albeit with the leftovers, but happy to pay more for a top pop graded coin.

Thank you i had missed that bit as i saw it after the event. Like i say they're beautiful coins and if that design is correct it will look even better that size.

I couldn’t agree more, Si. Having just bought the first 2022 BU one it’s good to add another big gold coin to my collection. My previous 2 purchases were about 18 months apart - the 1887 and 1893 proof half sovereigns, both PF64 Ultra Cameo. Big money out of my pocket yet tiny coins in return.

I'm the other way on this; I can't stand the RM modern matte finished coins. I much prefered the BU finish of the 2017 £5 and SOTD sov.

Mate have you had a 2022 £5 BU in hand?   The finish when they get it right is stunning, the newer mattes have almost a pearlescent finish.

don’t get me wrong I’ve had more issues with matte sovereigns than almost anything else.

I agree with you both. My ungraded 2017 quintuple DPL is stunning and comparable to the proof on the reverse in my opinion. I’ve got a PF70 proof to compare it with, and it would be unjust if the DPL didn’t achieve MS70.

But having also poo poo’ed matte finishes in the past I bought the (now first) 2022 quintuple BU last Saturday, and, although not the proof version, it’s still a stunner. Ironically my coin (as per the NGC number) is still advertised for sale on the website yet they also increased the price by almost 10% after it was bought and paid for. You can imagine how concerned I was until the coin was safely in my hands.

Only problem with the 5 BU sovereign is I think you will get it cheaper later in the year. A 2022 sold on the coinery last month for £1.95k plus 16% fees. Lovely coins though

I think potential buyers of the coin were put off by the large scratch on the rim near the word “Dieu” on the reverse and plenty of spots on the obverse. The price obtained merely reflects the condition of the ungraded coin.

Appreciate that, thanks. Can I get any views on buying the 5 Sov BU piece in terms of it appreciating in the future. I normally stick to proofs, but the low mintage has tempted me. I'm just trying to sense check my thinking from more seasoned buyers.

I didn’t start collecting gold coins until about a year after the launch of the 2017 special year design sovs. The quintuple DPL reverse/BU obverse originally retailed for around £1875 as far as I know and I picked one up from a dealer for not a great deal more in 2018. I’ve recently seen 2 or 3 dealers asking for well over £3K for MS70 graded ones. Moral of the story is if you have a special year design of any denomination just put it in your safe for several years and watch the prices climb on the secondary market.

  12. I have a tiny few 19th century gold coins in my collection including the 1887 proof half sov in an attractive PF64 grade. I love the coin more than my larger and more modern PF seventies. Whereas the higher denomination golds have the George and Dragon reverse, it’s nice to have something different on the reverse of the half sov, as depicted on the top right coin on your first photo Lawrence. Thank you.

So… currently on heritage, pre-bidding for the platinum nights in a few weeks, what am I missing? 🤯

I thought you were missing absolutely nothing Mike, until my spot the difference skills from childhood mags and comics spotted the black mark on the rim of the lower coin near the 7 o’clock position. I hope it wasn’t on the actual coin though.

Will it do well in the future I am not sure but if you do own it and decide to move it on the best time to strike and sell would probably be when the next coin in the series starts getting hyped up early next year.

The next release will get hyped up for sure yet it won’t need it in the slightest.

@SilverDrum it was a very long time to wait. What I have realised about submitting to NGC is that if you are lucky enough to catch the shipment (ie the one from the UK office to the US) just as it's about to leave you have a shorter time to wait, however if you are unlucky and submit when they are at the beginning of a shipment then you wait until that shipment goes from the UK. This can be 2-3 weeks. When coins are sent to us, we process and send off to the UK office within a few days of receiving. Though it really has no bearing to how long those items will take to be graded. Unfortunately I am not privy to the knowledge of when they are at the end of their shipment ie about to send off to the US.

Now I am aware of this because when your coin was back from grading (yours was submitted on March 16th to them) the May submissions came back at the same time as the few March submissions. Hopefully this is making sense. lol

Anyway, I hope this helps people to understand that we in no way have control of when these are returned or how long they take.

I am glad you got a Top Pop! Grade anyway. At least it was worth the wait.

    Best regards

    Louise

This answers the questions I intended to ask once I could afford the printer ink to print off the NGC submission form!  I’ll be visiting the vault early next month at the latest to select what I’d like graded first. I might pop the printer ink in the vault as well.
