  1. The releases of the Jubilee series, the Memorial series and the Coronation series have hit collectors hard in our pockets as we all know. Likewise the cost of living crisis.

I wasn’t too sure about stretching to a third quintuple purchase after the first 2 special releases. In the end, I decided to give the Coronation quintuple a miss, simply basing my decision on the fact that the Jubilee and Memorial special designs appear on the front of my slabs, whereas crowned Charles would only appear on the back.

The 2016 sov with the one-off effigy of the Queen suffered the same fate.

  2. Hi Stefan. I’d like to purchase one of these please. I’ll PM you tomorrow to check that there’s no change to your bank details since I bought the quintuple Memorial.

I recently bought my son his first bullion sov and I’d like to buy him a top graded proof for Christmas so he can compare both versions side by side. Cheers.

    Hi all,

I've been a collector of gold and silver coins for the last 10+ years.  I've stumbled across the forum while searching for info on a new release from The Royal Mint exclusive to platinum and platinum+ account holders only, that is being offered on Tues 29th Aug.

As a platinum+ account holder my account manager called me to say I will be able to buy the release on Tuesday as my set/s have been secured, but I know nothing of them other than max mintage of 75 in gold and silver and has nothing to do with the British Monarchs collection which is also being released on Tuesday.

Does anybody have any additional info?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, welcome to the forum. Was it a case of not hearing what the release is, or your account manager perhaps forgetting to tell you, do you think?

@Paul might know, because he usually gets those calls too.

Mate, I live in Australia and the state government is actually putting up a bronze statue to the Australian team…………… that came 4th. Nothing surprises me anymore

Shocking. I wonder just how many Aussie cricketers and swimming gold medalists have missed out on that over the years?

Basically the coins worth collecting and most likely to appreciate in value nowadays are those of which the general consensus is that they are of exceptional design and/ or have extremely low mintages. Plus they better be in pristine condition, or else they are just bullion, worth no more than their weight in gold and unlikely to appreciate in value unless the collector pool increases proportionally to supply. But I doubt that’s the case.

Am I wrong? Is my logic flawed? I’m interested to hear from the knowledgeable members on this forum. Please share your thoughts on the subject.

Hi @Ignorant. Some of us collect, some of us stack and some of us do both, as we’re all aware. But when it comes to precious metal coins then we all invest. Some of us look to sell our investments on at a profit. Some of us like to hold onto our investments and ultimately gift them to sons, daughters or whoever.  So when you suggest  “some coins are just bullion, worth no more than their weight in gold and unlikely to appreciate in value”  I would add that the value of bullion fluctuates in line with its constantly changing price on the precious metal markets.

Simply buy your bullion when market prices are down and sell when the market is up and there’s your profit. Personally I wouldn’t refer to it as “just bullion”. After all, it’s still precious.

My Second super summer gold sale looks like it's  incoming soon next weekend to pay for todays impulse purchases ! :(

never give a stacker fiat cash he'll only re spend it back on gold

Impulse purchases maybe, but they should set your own pulse racing when you’ve got the coins in your hand. I bought the same coin in the First Release label from Mr T back in May, but you’ must have acquired these beauties at a truly rock bottom price.

Good to know I'm not the only one who dwells on these things!

If I did end up buying one I would keep it intact, I don't think my OCD would ever recover from me breaking up such a set, although it would make sense - as you say the double is the one worth having.

    Hmm.

Decisions, decisions. Not so easy when there’s thousands of pounds at stake. When I mentioned that I tend to dwell on decisions until I’m happy with whatever I decide, I failed to mention that they’re not always right in the longer run but they seemed right at the time!

Knowing I couldn’t afford a £5 proof Memorial in a box set I took the plunge on the raw £5 BU. When the opportunity came to buy a PF70 £5 sov off a TSF member then I upgraded to that. The Bank of Wife had to help me out with that one. So now I’m dwelling on the future of the BU coin. I’ve still not got around to the Coronation sov yet but I “think” I know my plan. It would be very handy to have a 2nd wife though!

TBH box sets are not my thing. Hopefully the monarchy will settle down for a while now, I can settle my IOU and then think about obtaining a first ever SOTD myself (raw though, so I could admire its plain edge).

I'm debating a 4 coin set, they are still available, and I'd need to sell some shiny to afford it, but - it's only going to be all the returns and total shockers that are left now surely?

And I'm not even convinced that I really, really want one. I have the SotD, maybe I should just be happy with that - that was my plan after all.

But I can't shake the thought that maybe I should take a punt...Jeez this game is agony sometimes!

I tend to dwell on such decisions for a considerable time before I arrive at the conclusion I’m happy with. I share your concerns regarding what you could end up with from the Mint.

You did really well to get a SOTD and, maybe you could wait and see what comes up on the secondary market?  Bearing in mind the high mintage of the sov as well as the low mintage of your SOTD, perhaps you could forego acquiring everything in the 4 coin set and just go for the £2 proof instead?  Or is it more the prestige of owning the 4 coin set itself?

DIfference between the 4 coin and 5 coin set was £3200 with Memorial.

All depends on peoples gut feeling on how well it will do.

The memorial 5 sovs alone on open market have dried up a fair bit tbh - maybe we should have all got a few pf70's when everyone was panicking.

Gut feelings are one thing but I struggle with the FOMO personally!

Just doing some basic maths for the 5 set

If RRP is £5725 that gets you a 5 2 1 half and quarter or 8.75 sovereigns

So each sovereign is factored to 654.28 each, so times 5, a five sovereign you'll be in for £3271 at launch

    Coronation £5 70s are around £3300 to £3800 currently

I'll just hang around and wait I think

Just FYI Paul I did the same calculations for the 5 coin Memorial box set when I bought a PF70 Quintuple off a TSF member. A raw Memorial Quintuple equated to £3197 on release, or £74 less than your estimate for this one.

Hi. If the 1907 Melbourne AUNC sov pictured immediately above is still available then I’d like to buy it please. I take it BT would be acceptable?

  12. In general it’’s easy to criticise the RM. I like the occasional moan about them (quite rightly about the lack of any QC in particular). However, we complain about some mintages in general because they’re just too high, hence this topic of debate whether the long term value makes them a good investment or not. Yet other mintages are just too low and we complain that they sell out in a flash and we just can’t get hold of them. It can’t be easy to strike a balance and please everybody, collectors and flippers or both alike.

The skill in spotting a winning coin release is based on more than factors beyond something that’s just a special release perhaps?

Credit where it's due, for all the criticism of their quality control, over 95% of the census achieving a 70 shows a high production standard, but makes them not really any more valuable on the secondary market.

That would be over 95% achieving a 70 out of those sovereigns considered worthy of grading. Others (particularly in box sets) have been returned straight back to the RM as being unsatisfactory.
