I really can't imagine them pulling off a con job by pretending damaged returned coins had gone through the trial.

I agree a lot of the coins are a bit overpriced. But it's always nice to have one as a novelty?

This time round however, I think there were some really smart buys to be had, with qualities like:

    • never released to the public (so these will be the only 8/9/10 coins around (for a while? forever?!))
    • very special/for a non-repeatable event (e.g. certain platinum jubilee ones)
    • probably mispriced by RM. e.g. one of the offerings was a 1oz gold bullion maid marian coin for only £1850 or thereabouts. I regret not getting that one 🤣

Some of them really were worth snapping up imho. Other things that have stood out in the past are non-coloured versions of silver coins that were otherwise only available in colour, thus guaranteeing there will only ever be 10 of them in existence. A couple of the silver coins in the trial pieces auction (not the trial of the pyx) were one-of-a-kinds as they were the single only non-coloured versions of a coin (even though they aren't actually coins of course).

Very well reasoned but then you have the shenanigans of facsimile signatures on slabs instead of the advertised handwritten ones, plus single figure amounts of Brilliant Proofs (whatever they are) which just seems to be pushing the boundaries of advertising such as you find with other coin marketing companies. To each their own when it comes to collecting I suppose.

The G&D sold out as did their other BU quarter sovereign on the sovereign anniversary.

My point wasn't however about the design but that particular company was also issuing gold coins not far away from spot rather than just the inflated price proofs.

Of course it was. I wasn’t disagreeing with you, but just making an observation.

Problem is that there are a number of TV adverts for coin souvenirs, sold at what many of us might regard as inflated prices, for military events. Some of them are even backed by veterans associations. Even though they say they are not sold as an investment some buyers still think that they are and end up being disappointed when they sell them at a fraction of the price later.

Interestingly though the London Mint Office seem to be taking a different tact and are selling some of their coins in BU grade and at a price around spot (£108 for quarter sovereign).

    https://www.londonmintoffice.org/shop/winston-churchill-bu-quarter-sovereign

I clicked on the link and noticed that the advertised quarter “sovereign” was just Gibraltar tat with a Winston Churchill design on the reverse instead of the traditional G+D. London Mint at its best.

I'd be fuming as well - this may be of help in your plight mate as that is outrageous.

I received an email yesterday from RM telling me about more TOTP coins being available. Searched gold standard and there it is one ounce Gold standard....... odd to tell you its not available and then send this comms message out.

(apologies for chopping up list - its massive)

I wonder why so many 2022 Trial of the Pyx coins are on the above list. Wouldn’t they have been submitted by 2023 at the latest? Why are they trying to flog them in 2024?

The Trial of the Pyx is such a cash cow for the RM that it wouldn’t surprise me if poorly handled coins being sent out on initial release to customers, or being rejected by one or more customers, are just lobbed in the pile seemingly being submitted for the trial. A lot of collectors are drawn to these but it just seems a con to me.

Adding 2.5oz is great. 'Own it and love it' ❤️ This should be your signature on here! Yes be good! The charts usually creep down in the summer, so I'm told! Some members balance small amounts, more frequently. You can catch some really good deals on here from @James32 @Tn21 @kneehow2018 @Auronumto name a few

Thank you my friend. Your top grade 2012 double sov is a great coin as well by the way and your pics do it great justice. But it would be an injustice if you had to sell it for a daylight robbery price so I wish you the best of luck if you still have it and put it up for sale again in the future. I didn’t think the coin and price were the problem - it just seems to be about getting the timing right in this difficult market and perhaps a bit of luck.

Oh I’ve just noticed it’s back on, or still for sale. Good luck Chris.

I remember you buying the archery coin for your son, I thought it was brilliant🏹

I wonder if you will be frugal in May……… 😆

Thank you young lady. I’m not sure if the RM still put “Treasure For Life” on their coin boxes, but hopefully my son will treasure that Robin Hood coin.

Yeah, May is going to be a long month. But what the hell. March and April were golden.

  7. When @Paul started this topic in November I didn’t feel the need to participate as I didn’t see me adding to my gold this year. I keep meaning to put some graded proofs up for sale first.

I managed to get to the very last day in January when @Fenlander1 tempted me with a generously priced 1oz bullion Robin Hood coin. Technically I didn’t add to MY gold as it’s going to be a present for my archery daft son.

I then went daft myself in March. Nothing to do with archery - just mad about gold coins. Started off March by adding to my small sovereign bullion stack with a big 1oz for myself this time - the Lion of England, courtesy of @9x883, followed by a George V sov from @Foster88 and a Gillick sov from @James32

I’m retired now so no longer earning a wage therefore April was going to be frugal. To hell with frugal though. @9x883 tempted me once again, this time with a lovely 1oz Oriental Brit. That’s what happens when I read the Buy and Sell topics last thing of a night and I’m too tired to resist a cheeky purchase. Memo to self - don’t read that topic last thing of a night (especially when you need the cash for new car tyres and car insurance).

So I’m being good in May (I need to be) but I’ve added approx 2.5 ounces to the stack in 2024. Not really saving anything for a Christmas gold treat though, but happy with what I’ve unexpectedly achieved in a few short months though. Gold could be more expensive by Christmas or it could be cheaper. Why worry? Take the plunge and buy it if you can when you can. Own it and love it.

So my sincere thanks to the above Forum stalwarts for my 2024 purchases, along with an apology to @9x883 for not keeping him rolling in cash for a third consecutive month 😊

  8. I’ve made several gold purchases in the past from Mark Osborne who runs the ukgoldcoins website. The last item being the matte quintuple Memorial sovereign upon release, so I (rightly or wrongly) assumed at the time that he was an official RM distributor.

I don’t doubt the underhand experiences suffered by a couple of the posters above, but I can say that he provided me with a very good service. That’s not to say I wouldn’t approach buying from him with caution if there’s a next time though.

Well Done ! 1kg is a nice milestone to achieve

Aside, myself as a bit of a Dull Mans Club OCD freak who likes logic, order, tidiness, familiarity, minimalism and clutter free life, i much approve your arrangement and storage method. Maximising safe deposit real estate space, is all the more pleasing so you don't over pay for a larger safe deposit locker you don't need

I agree with a lot of this, Paul, especially your last comment. I’m guessing (perhaps wrongly) that you haven’t paid off a mortgage though and hold the deeds to your property? For peace of mind I decided to splash out on a 10 inch wide safe deposit box to store my deeds rather than filing them somewhere inconspicuous in the house.

Plenty of room for the slabs etc now in my larger box and some spare room if you want me to store some of your nice 2oz gold pieces there?  😁

I got this graded last year which I purchased from you. Annoyingly they took it out of the packaging when told not to & assigned it a PF63UCAM. I had a whinge which it then came back a Brilliant Proof which I think was the 1st to be described as such. I have just aquired another of the same coin but I will be keeping that in the packaging for grading.

Hi Shawy.  I’m none the wiser with the Brilliant Proof description. Is your coin the Deep Proof Like reverse with the BU obverse, or is it the full proof, i.e. both obverse and reverse sides?  The back of the slab is the obvious difference between each version. Thanks.

It's recently come to my attention though, that all of my pairs of socks have got at least one hole, or significant wear - so I shall have to divert some funds, to replenish what has been banished from the ol' sock draw 😩. But that shall never stop me! 😁.

I came home once and told my wife that I’d spent £100 on socks. She told me I was mad. But the £100 was a deposit on my new car with its registration including the letters SO**KS.

Your application for membership of The Dull Men’s Club has now been received.

If the holes in your socks are in different places then just wear 2 pairs per day.

There’s no need to divert funds away from gold. Just be resourceful.

Begs the question at what point will it top collectors out of the market?

Let alone the SOTD, the price of standard proof sovs is also on the march, so much so that collectors must be turning to more affordable proof half sovs.

Supply versus demand. What’s the chances of the Mint holding or slightly dropping proof sov prices if/when demand drops? Will they mint fewer?

Off topic Monarch series wise, but just joining in the recent conversation.

  14. Lovely looking coin thanks to great photos. I don’t see the RM holographic security logo on it. Much prefer Brits without it in all honesty.

If you can confirm that my blurry eyes aren’t deceiving me this time of night and there is indeed no hologram on it then I’ll take it please.

Please PM me accordingly and I’ll get back to you in the daytime. I expect your bank details won’t have changed since my recent Lion of England purchase?

Probably my fault - someone asked about this company (by its new name) somewhere so I linked to this thread...

Correct. Your fault, but my stupidity. I clicked on your link before nipping out of the room and losing the plot.

This is primarily a safe deposit company from the ROI which has been branching out around the UK for quite a few years. I was a customer in one location but then switched to a more convenient one when it opened. I know of several TSF members who use them in other locations in the UK. Their prices are uncompetitive when compared to the top bullion dealers. End of story.

What happened?  One minute I was on the gold monitoring thread, nipped out for a second and ended up here on this ancient thread. Anyone seen my marbles?
