Carry a torch with you, shine it in the camera when paying. Fun-times for whoever watches the security feed.

Last comment from me about self service checkouts so as not to derail the thread - they now have cameras directly in your face with a big screen as though to say "we can see you up close, don't steal anything". I don't like security cameras as it is and I just about tolerate them, but having it right in your face is beyond rude. What I did yesterday is cover the lens with my hand while I scanned my stuff. Yes I know the other cameras can see me but it's the principle. I'll keep doing this, expecting a store worker to eventually ask me why I'm covering the camera. I will tell them why. These are the grossest thing I've ever experienced in a supermarket. I will keep covering them until they hopefully one day get removed.

I was at Tesco Express an hour ago and there wasn't a cashier in sight. It's often the case that these machines are the only way to pay for your goods. I covered the camera again. Bloody cheek of them.

ID must be resisted as hard as resisting a cashless society because it boils down to the same concepts. We on a forum like this all know why companies are doing it and we all know why we shouldn't let them. I really don't have sympathy for reps who cite legislation for their reasons for demanding ID. It's just not true (at least for <£7500).

It's like those new self service checkouts at Tesco which are card only, even though their previous machines could process cash just fine. It's "nudging", to use a coined phrase these days.

Vote with your wallet and take your business away from them. I'm glad there are still some dealers who play nice regarding ID, we must encourage those ones to carry on like that.

@LawrenceChard - the HMRC webpage says
You must take reasonable steps to make sure that your customer has given you correct information. In order to do this, you must ask for and examine at least one document from each of the following lists: - [List of ID documents.]
This is in section 7 of the webpage - this section does not make mention of the thresholds of £5000 for a single purchase - £10000 total of all purchases in the year, however section 7 talks about invoices and since elsewhere it states there is no obligation to issue an invoice if a purchase(s) do not breach the thresholds, then section 7 only applies to these larger purchases.
It appears to me that there is no obligation on dealers to ask for ID for purchases under the thresholds. Perhaps Bairds are capturing all customers for their convenience in preparation for if they go over the annual limit.

I don't think the rise in GBP will start proper until the USD manipulation dam trying to hold back the floods finally breaks.

We are in strange times where business now are refusing cash payments, there is no legal right to say business have to accept it, many businesses now don't want it and you get the 3rd degree trying to pay it back into the bank.   For me I'll keep on off loading in the petrol stations and super markets but it's only a matter of time before some large chains will stop taking it.   I like cash so I'll just have to keep flipping it all until they all have Charles III on them all.
In short I do not trust banks....have you read the new terms and conditions?  Thinking up to 85k per finical institution is safe is not as safe as it used to be because they have changed the laws, they can limit how much you can have in an account (this amount is up to them and can be changed at any time) they can also "in economic difficulties" can limit how much money they will allow to withdraw........It's not even your money the second you deposit it into the bank did you know that?

Unfortunately the masses accept government intrusion as though it's normal, and so we are stuck with VAT among other things. Even income tax was only supposed to be a temporary war measure but a century later it is still here.

People are selling 1 Oz coins right now whilst spot is £16 for £22 to £23 'cheap' I've not seen any 1 Oz bullion for ages selling even at £20 an Oz so it would be far better for anyone to flog the silver eagles for £2k and buy a 1 Oz gold for £1550

With the present economic outlook, I would go for cheapest % premium recent years (most recognisable, best condition). Chards do a 'Minty' but I've not recently checked prices, maybe go for more specific years if they are not much more expensive.
The 2022s are a decent bet, but lots of people are stocking up on those expecting them to do well - I think it will be one of the highest mintage years personally and not hard to come by.
Look for other recent opportunities that others haven't spotted yet, the ones with privys (e.g. 2017 are selling on the secondary market at a small mark-up at present, I would go for these rather than 2022s, especially if you already have some).
There was no bullion 1989, and the proofs are now prohibitively expensive imho unless you're looking for an expensive purchase that might increase even more (but that's not stacking). 2017 bullion just had a privy - not special reverse - still worth picking up at a low % if you can. 2002, 2005, 2012 - sorry I forget which, but one or two of these may still be picked up for a decent % premium.
I think this is a very good call!

Fill in a CN22 form and declare weight cost etcetera..when describing item then say souvenir, which is all it is.
Nothing to stress about here, you're genuinely sending a cheap item with no monetary value. It will sail straight through to recipient.

OK I've searched my specific query on Google already without finding an answer so in order to ask it here, I'll double it up and say GOLD to the US in case anyone else finds the answers useful.

But my specific query is sending a gold PLATED coin to the US. I'm trying to send a fancy letter to prospective employers out there, but it would obviously kill my efforts if US customs opened the package to check it's not a real gold coin being smuggled under a pretence of it being gold plated.

Anyone in the know? Of course if normal gold doesn't usually get intercepted then I guess I'm safe with a gold plated coin.

    Thanks in advance.

I sent Gold to Canada, looked for the code for it for the customs form,  plated would propably not fall into legal tender so declare it as a medal maybe? you need to put what's in it for sending anything and pay for it through Royal Mail site, they then pre-fill the cutstoms form for you save you having to fill one out yourself

While it's true that literal VAT is not charged in the trading section of the forum, to manage expectations keep in mind the 20% margin is pretty much still there, plus the usual mark up as well. Probably fair enough given the UK marketplace is VAT saturated, a seller on here can just add the "ghost" VAT with a slight undercut (say, 18%) and still give the buyer a "bargain" while taking close to full price.
