Hi kookaburracollector 😃 Those are lovley. I’m happy with my two and I’m not looking to get anymore at present. They are a nice little addition to the 20 franc collection. I quite like the leather ones. Difficult to get in good condition tho. I hope you win them.
Just watched the auction end on the etui Porte Louis (seller in France) and decided not to bid on them..On closer inspection I noticed the lid on the brass one did not fit, so had probably been cross threaded at some time. The blue one had no internal mechanism, so only the red one was probably ok...no mention of this in the description either!!
Having recently got a full refund from a French main dealer (PM me if you want to know who) for selling a coin with concealed damage I decided to pass on this one. Probably the right decision. Think I’ll give the French a miss for a while...
They sold for €61 inc postage...
ps
I am impatientently waiting for the next instalment of the WW1 thread @augur

You got any Belgians in your collection or do you prioritize getting your French collection complete?
Hi, and welcome to the forum.
I am being very careful not to start another collecting ‘project’ before I have completed the ones I have already started. So...I am still looking for a few 1oz Kookaburra Privy coins, and one is going to be difficult to obtain...the 1993 Eagle has a Mintage of 500 and most are held in tight hands.
On the French front, just 1 rooster required (1900) which is easy to obtain, but I am trying to avoid French dealer high prices.
I am also short of about 7 or 8 Guardian Angels. When I have secured a few more of these, then I will give some serious thought as to what to collect next.
What I don’t want to do is start collecting a particular coin, only to find out later that one is incredibly rare, thus preventing me from completing my collection. For this reason, I would find it hard to collect sovereigns...the 1937 Edward V111 Proof could never be obtained, along with several other rarities..there are also financial constraints to be considered..
With the above in mind, I will be doing a fair bit of research before I take the plunge..and hopefully find a coin series which is interesting, obtainable and hopefully inexpensive!
All applications will be given due consideration...including the Belgians...of which I currently own none!

@KevinFlynn Allow me to try and make up your mind as what to collect next....
Am I helping at all 😀😀😀 lol!

Hi @augur You have some very interesting coins on display. I especially like the 20 Korona coin which would sit very well with my collection of angels...The MS66 grade for your 1914 rooster is very high, NGC have only ever graded one MS67 (for 1914) and nothing higher, so we’ll done on that pick up!
I have yet to have any of my coins graded..The thought of being denied ‘access’ to any of my coins doesn’t sit well with my psyche...just my luck one day I will catch the kids playing tiddlywinks with them lol!😂
Having looked at my roosters, the restrikes (post 1906 I think) are certainly in better condition as you would expect, and if I ever do get one graded I think I would test the water with my 1914 as well...not sure it would compare well to your MS66 but I was very happy with it when it arrived..although it did cost way over spot! (£193)
I have no idea what the dark area to the right of the roosters head is, but I guess it adds to the authenticity and charm of the coin..
Happy hunting to all ...I have just added a Gruffalo to my wanted list, but they are not released by the Royal Mint until March me thinks!

I am stacking bullion grade coins without a regard for date. If you start with Vrenelli one day, drop me a message and I can tell you which dates I have. I would swap coin for coin.
Do not expect any rares though, as the real numismatic pieces will surely have been sorted from the more mundane pieces from which I select.
Hi, you are lucky to have a shop close by to call in on..I can only dream...
Not sure if you have noticed, but only two years ago, I could call one of several dealers and get them to select the years I wanted, cherry pick the best condition coins, and also send me a photo in advance...what a great way to buy..
Now...hardly any stock to choose from, and they have cottoned on to the fact that the different years have different values...I think the honeymoon is over.
Regards to the vrenellis...I literally couldn’t decide for ages whether to collect those or the roosters...it was a close call..
regards..

@Lea79 whoa! What a great selection of coins you have their...I kind of wish I hadn’t asked now lol!
The table is also a nice backdrop..is the inlay mother of Pearl or abalone?...reminds of a time when I used to deal in violins and bows...the slide on a bow is made of the same material...way off topic now!
Just buy the Italian coin you want...money can always be replaced....that’s what I keep telling myself anyway...
Hopefully see it on ‘Today I Received’ next week....

Are you thinking about branching out into the other francs equivalent coins?
I have some LMU follow ups with the swiss Vreneli I am stacking, and I was thinking of getting others, as well.
I am eyeing the original LMU Helvetia, then in a first go coins of the other LMU founding nations (France, Italy, Belgium).
Designwise, I like the french Rooster as well as the Angel.
Call it OCD, but I like to complete date runs of the coins I collect. So for the roosters that’s 1899-1914 (16 coins) and on the angels it’s from 1871 to 1898 (22 coins). 1879 and 1896 have two different engraver marks in the same year which makes them tricky, and there were several years when no coins were minted...
(1848 &1849) are also to be included thinking about it!
So far....I have all the roosters except 1900......hold me and to ransoms if you have one!!
The angels are proving elusive having got 14 different years so far..
Looking at the prices of the earlier French 20 francs coins, I think I will have to find another country to collect...Vrenelli looking good me thinks, although the ducats also appeal....
Regards to HGM...I can’t get to see the coins before buying which is a pain..The only time I used them in the past did not go well, as I received a really poor condition coin...once bitten. Being ‘Up North’ restricts my choice big time unfortunately.
I have considered using the ‘Wanted’ facility on the forum but that sort of spoils the fun of the chase somehow, and I’m in no hurry (need to find some £££ first)
So..for the few souls that read this thread, drop me a PM if you come across any of the following French 20 francs coins...must be in good condition...and hope I am in a generous mood...
1848, 1871,1879, 1887,1889,1892,1894 and 1896.
PS... I know lots of people use HGM, do you actually call in the shop to select the coins you buy or do you buy blind and then pray before opening the post?.just curious..

20 francs are still my favourite coins. I’ve got 12/13 different designs and still lots to get. Quite fancy the hungairian one above.
Hi, any chance you could post some photos of the different designs you have (just your favourites), it might give me an idea as to what I want to collect in the future...just a thought!

A year down the line (and a little wiser) I can now answer my own question from the past..both coins were minted..
A pity this thread went quiet, as I love the French 20 francs coins..been collecting a few as and when...best pickup by far is below...
Not cheep but a tricky one to obtain secured.
Would be interested to hear if anyone has any Angels for sale ..or where I might be able to get some from..they are becoming harder to source from my usual suppliers..

Today I received a load of hassle from a Parisienne coin dealer...sold me this coin as TTB+....you can get your fingernail under the crack!
Caveat Emptor indeed...return opened so let’s see how it goes with you know who and PayPal..
Beware a scanned image and not a photograph...they can hide such a lot!
