Yeah, you're missing something. Buy an oz of gold that spots for $1000, and when spot goes up $50 from the price you paid then sell it, surprisingly you're going to find out you lost "unless" you know a place that sells gold for spot and buys for spot. If you find this place let me know.
Not long ago I sold a 1/4 oz platinum coin for $305, which a year before I had paid $250. How did I lose? This was an online transaction.
It sounds like you're thinking only of buying and selling from dealers, store fronts. You can buy from them for decent prices but they won't ever give you decent prices. That's why you don't sell to them unless it's a real emergency and they're your only option.

Yes, I admit I said that and I wouldn't buy it at the present because the gains will not outperform the loss. JMO
But if you buy gold and it goes higher then you will only gain. Right? Or am I missing something?

I do like something different from the norm on occasion. Thanks @StackSellRepeat. Really nice coin.
Oh that must be the mythical beast known as the Congress that actually produces a balanced budget, reduces debt, abides by the Constitution, and does the work of the people!
I've only heard of this thing in faint whispers, and in accounts of dreams long forgotten.

For the $5 pesos coins I use the tube you have there on the right. I think it's an A-size Air-Tites, and I use the Air-Tites 19mm direct fit capsules, since I prefer to see the sides of the coins (why hide that golden color?) I've also noticed that in many instances 21 capsules will fit in most Air-Tites tube sizes.

And if they don't actually include Sid and Scrat, it'll be a missed opportunity. Just include them as very limited editions as part of the series, one in the middle, and the other at th end, and you'll add even more collectibility.

Provident has $5 half Eagles at spot.
-
The website says 12.50 pounds, including shipping.
But isn't a sovereign a legal definition, as in, the gold coin of approximately 1/4 ounce is legally a sovereign?
-
It is an opportunity, maybe, but every time I look at the more affordable sizes (1/4 ounce, for example), the premium is still very high. Too high for me. For that price I'd rather buy gold.

I added another modern half eagle to the stack, a 1997 Jackie Robinson memorial. And managed to pay under spot by about $12. Pretty happy about it.
