The first system I recall was windows 95, not sure what came before, but that moved to Windows 98 and then the big deal (as M/soft swept millennium I think it was under the rug) and behold Windows XP.

I still have floppy discs kicking around, amazing the changes we've seen in a relatively short period - although not all for the better IMO .............

I think we were on Windows NT as my course was around '94/5 but may be wrong. It was quite a few months ago now. 🤣 We did have printers, yup  dot matrix. And FAX, can't forget that. We even had a telephone. And the X Files. There was a group of us who used the library our pc course was based in to form an 'alien discovery team' We didn't get very far. Without the invention of the internet all we could do was sit around wondering if the librarian was ET.

    I've gone off on a tangent again haven't I? 😜

I'll return with something gold in a bit.

Didn't have spread sheets back in the 90's, or at lest I didn't,

but I do well recall 3 digit gold, and the 1st digit was pretty damn low for quite a while.

    Gold doing it's job ............. ✔

We had spreadsheets in the 90s. I remember making macro formulas for my City & Guilds level three. Was a bygone era sans internet with floppy disc drives. Loved it. I could actually play the video games back then. Now it's all Fortnight and I have to connect to someone named Tamika on the other side of the world to partner up to fight a Sonic the Hedgehog Terminator hybrid and pay real money if I want to change my avatar's underpants.

Haven't yet got anything smaller than a sovereign, will probably get a few half sovs if the premium is not too far off that of sovs. Same with 1/10th Britannias, wouldn't hurt to have some if the premium can be recouped.

On a different note, some might question the phrase 'gold coins' and 'investment' in the same sentence.

I see it more as a form of inflation-proof savings.

Investment implies a yield, PMs have none

Some of us don't care about that grown up stuff and just like shiny things 😄

They seem to trade at pretty huge premiums to spot Gold, unlike the full Sovereign, which is the first drawback.

But they are so TINY. Weighing in around 3gms or so, they are more like fancy buttons than actual coins.

And then there are a growing number of different ones to choose from.

Or is it just down to the affordability question?

When you're in the midst of deepest gold fever - and you'll either fully understand what this is right now, or will certainly experience it in the future - any gold will do to satiate it. And if the money's not in the piggy bank to buy your preferred type of gold, sovereign, brit or whatever, those one tenners will look like a refreshing glass of water while traipsing though a desert 'n those 'buttons' will look like an oasis of gold cascading down upon you relieving your fever and helping you feel whole once again 😅 Buy them. Store them. Love them 🤪

    Edited to add:

Those 3 grammers and positively weighty compared to the legendary one gram bar. And even they are worth collecting 👍 imo. You don't need to aim for the morbidly obese 1oz coin, there's plenty down the food chain just as attractive. And when the price of gold rockets, and the economy collapses, you might find the smaller weights far easier to shift than Gran'pa's one ounce bald eagle.

Going off that picture I’d say yes it’s a complete duff .

I've never seen such a flat looking 2023 sovereign tbh. The ones I've come across irl have been really pleasing with a good amount of detailing. What's the obverse like?

    Here's the half sov obverse:

Could you have a duff 2023 sovereign? Here's my 2023 half sov and the detailing in it is top notch. imo.

One day, it will become so flat, that they will just laser the St George and Dragon on blank and only Proof will have been done with dies. While people buy, The Royal Mint takes the P

The evolution of the sovereign is becoming like 'The Emperors New Clothes' Eventually they'll not be a physical sovereign at all, just an image online held by whichever bullion dealer you paid to have you name added to the list of purchasers. Then on 'Today I Received' we'll all be proudly displaying our name next to the cgi sov' happy to have shelled out 10 million digital credits or whatever they'll go for by then. Mind you, they have that kind of thing already with the RMs 'digital gold' what a wonderful idea, gold, that's not gold. Or even really there.

Give it 50 years of being examined by avid collectors and it’ll have a lovely sweaty fingerprint lustre, dinks where it’s been dropped and enough scuffs to give it the character people crave.

Only in as much as anything matters.  I'm simply musing on the implications for price as this development becomes clearer to investors over the coming weeks.  If shipping insurance is denied, the world's number one fertilizer hub would be taken offline.  It all depends on whether this new approach is condoned or condemned by our illustrious leaders.  If our ally is allowed (or even quietly encouraged) to continue this new course of action, inflation (and by extension further rate rises) is the most likely outcome.  Perhaps there are some who would wish their national debts inflated away, all the while blaming others for the inflation....

As you say, most of us here are just into gold or silver as a hobby.  But the price does matter, and I see turbulence coming if this development isn't immediately halted.

I view our western governments as lovers of waterboarding the populous. They'll never quite let us drown, but love to keep us feeling like we are. I have every faith in politicians keeping their gravy trains running indefinitely. They're excellent train engineers and the rest of us are along for the ride. Perhaps in cattle class, but we're on the train nonetheless.

I tried in May 2022. They wouldn’t let me in the door as I didn’t have an appointment…Id travelled from Australia 🤣 seriously. ..that’s not a joke

Awwww. I was told by appointment too. It's the way to go these days. You don't want Benedicto Del Toro turning up unannounced and jumping on your counter and waving a shooter around.

I suppose you could have rung them up while you were outside the shop asking if they could fit you in. They can't be that busy. It's not like a book signing for Micheal Ball at WH Smiths. That was busy. Almost a dozen fans turned up 🤣

I think that another round of inflation is coming, and hence by extension further rate rises could be on the cards.

Does it matter? Has anyone got enough gold put away to retire on? Not here, nothing much past a hobby for me and I wonder for how many others too. Nope, it's the good old state pension for me when I retire, if there's anything left in the pot. And if not, well, I've invested in ruddy good tent. Maybe spend the last of my days by a camp fire under a tarp watching the heavens and the stars. Maybe not. Probably be in an old folks home getting beaten to death.

We should just refer to it as ‘the upsidedown ’ Alla stranger things. Great find for Lawrence. Interesting QA from the mint🤣

I want to go to Blackpool and meet Mr L Chard. It'd be like going to comic con and meeting your fav TV star. Maybe get a selfie and a signed carrier bag. Not kidding. I love memorabilia. 😀
