ArgentSmith reacted to stefffana in which wore fastest in circulation .925 or .500 silver
Hi, all!
As I have promised you, I've done an experiment using four coins threepence, different years, to cover all four compositions. I have tried to have relatively similar initial weight and grade.
I have rubbed them on seven rounds, applying the same treatment for all of them, the same finger pressure and the same number of up-down courses, using sand paper 40 grit for Round 1, 100 grit for Round 2-3 and 220 grit for Round 4-7.
Of course, because I have not specific tools to measure the pressure and very accurate scale, this experiment it is not a very scientific one and my results are only pseudoscientific. But it is better than nothing. I have weighted three times every coin, and the recorded and valid weight was an average or the weight showed by scale two times. The recorded weight can be a little different than in pictures, with a difference of +/- 0.01g.
The coins used for this experiment are below, with pictures before and after:
1. 1917, 0.925 silver, 0.075 copper, weight initial 1.43g, final 1.23g, losing 0.20g.
2. 1921, 0.500 silver, 0.400 copper, 0.100 nickel. Initial weight 1.40g, final weight 1.19g, losing 0.21g
3. 1925, 0.500 silver, 0.500 copper. Initial weight 1.41g, final 1.20g, losing 0.21g.
4. 1936, 0.500 silver, 0.400 copper, 0.050 nickel, 0.050 zinc. Initial weight 1.40g, final 1.15g, losing 0.25g.
The initial, intermediary and final weights and total loss of these four coins are recorded in this chart:
The pictures are not great, but I've done the best I was able.
Conclusions:
In term of resistance,
0.925Ag/0.075Cu alloy lost less, 0.20g, but what is interesting, is almost blank now, unrecognizable.
0.500Ag/0.400Cu/0.050Ni/0.050Zn alloy lost 0.25g, apparently the worst, but again it is interesting, it is not blank, still having some details.
0.500Ag/0.400Cu/0.100Ni and 0.500Ag/0.500Cu lost the same 0.21g. Nothing to add about condition. George V is still there a little, in the mirror.😊
I hope this experiment will be useful for all of us. Can be repeated by another TSF member, having a total cost of @£10 (coins, sand paper),but is time consumer (@3h for me).
All the best!
Stefan.

Out of interest, because its really quite annoying me....
Does anyone else always get redirected to the beta page of RM's website.
The navigation tabs on the beta are GARBAGE and to find anything I have to manually search!
Chrome seems to be the only browser redirecting me to beta, very annoying!

ArgentSmith got a reaction from TeaTime in Damaged 1oz Silver Eagle bought from EMK
spot + production + sensible profit margin + delivery + VAT
A lot of bullion coins are sold in monster boxes to buyers who won't bother to open the box let alone the tubes let alone take a loop to each of them, a growing number of people don't even take delivery.

If you are giving as a wedding gift it is probably better to have the correct year. 2022 Gold Sixpence is £475 🥴

Thanks very much for this information. All very interesting!
The price tag of £475 is too rich for me considering the weight, but I would have been interested at £315. It is such a shame that it doesn’t have a limited mintage. That would have been the icing on the cake.

Average Joe lists a coin here, he would like to part with and it's on page 5 unsold and invisible before 24 hours is out and on page 20 once the bump brigade are out sorry to moan, but trading here is not a bit what it used to be

I asked my local pub landlord if I could have a search on his land , I have found that its the smaller parcels of land that turn up some interesting finds plus on this permission a few pints and a meal after 😀

There is a world of difference between asking and selling!

There are more sales coming to the forum. There are a few who have fallen on hard times and had to sell - or they are raising money for other reasons. However the sales thread is being flooded with commercial sales, many coming from north of the border.

ArgentSmith reacted to StackemHigh in Power coin 15% cancellation fee
The whole idea of pre-order and inflated stock of precious metals really does infuriate me. A lead time of maybe a few days after the mint has confirmed dispatch of goods is ok, but several weeks or months is downright shocking and such practices show poor working practice even serious cash flow problems paying for orders by gouging customers weeks or months in advance.

ArgentSmith reacted to stefffana in Power coin 15% cancellation fee
Dear @PowerCoin , If somehow I can make a customer to pay in full for something I have not yet, I am using his money few month and when the customer is frustrated I am giving him back only 85% from what he paid, I am not very sure it is a good practice. Even it is written in contract.
I can sell to you a Tesla, 2022 model full options. This car is not yet in my garage, but if you are paying in full, I promise you when I will have it you will receive it as quickly is possible for your fully satisfaction. If you will ask for your car or for your money, I will partially refund 85% and I will offer you a voucher from my generosity for next Tesla you will order from me in the next six month.
My example is only to see how weird is this practice. I am sure after you are reading all these opinions you will decide to change something in your T&C.
Regards,
Stefan.

ArgentSmith reacted to MancunianStacker in Power coin 15% cancellation fee
They do this all the time. They seem to say they have stock then hope to buy the coin on the secondary market for less than mint price to complete their order. I ordered several coins and whilst everyone else received their coins direct from the mint, they couldn’t fulfil my order from several months prior. I even gave them another month. In the end bought some gold pieces I didn’t really want which left a sour taste. Unlikely to buy again. Previously had very good experiences

ArgentSmith reacted to goldhunter in Power coin 15% cancellation fee
I ordered a coin from them 2 months ago, has not been despatched to me yet, so decided to cancel.
They charge a 15% cancellation fee(about £60 for my order) which is excessive for a distant selling product that they have not even despatched yet.
Something to consider if ordering from them.
