Hi Melon, just to let you know that I read your topic with great interest and it inspired me to make my first offering on the forum in the way of a potential swap of a few of my surplus coins for similar ones to tidy up my stack. Let's see what happens, it might beat trying to sell and re buy if it works.
If it does, I might come looking for 3 maples!!👍

Amazon van got stolen in the village next to me today and parked up on my land to transfer the parcels to another vehicle. They were disturbed by a DPD van delivering to me and hurried away with their back door open spreading parcels over the field and down the Lane. (Called it in and they were caught the next village over). Anyway 4 of them held the Amazon driver at knifepoint for his keys and this could of been any courier. All parcels are now tagged as evidence and obviously won’t be delivered. I wouldn’t and don’t post/courier anything without the correct insurance and today was one of many reasons why.

I’ve recently bought this job lot of coins, shown here is a fraction of what I bought.
I hadn’t seen them before buying so it was a mystery what would be in there and I’ve had lots of fun going through them this evening.
Another member here suggested I make this a post of its own, so here it is.
Apologies for the poor photos as they’ve all be taken this evening.
    What did I find?
I found mostly old pennies and some nice examples, Victoria, George V, Edward VII, George VI and Elizabeth. I also learned that the Victoria young head portrait was on the old pennies as late as the 1890’s.
I also lost count of the amount of th’repenny bits there are. No jokes needed. We all know what it rhymes with!!
I also found a nice 1948 quarter dollar and a few 1 Franc coins from 1945-1947 made from, Would you believe aluminium!! I thought they were plastic when I first picked them up. I can only imagine France was short of PM’s after 1945. No prizes for guessing why.
I did find some very nice George V Florins and three pence coins that I believe are 50% silver which I was pleased to find.
There are many world coins both old and new which many I have no idea about.
The curiosity with this got the better of me and it’s quite enjoyable. My family however looked at me in bewilderment as I tipped them on the table ready to rummage. 😆
Anyway, there’s still a lot more to go through and if anyone is interested I’ll update the post with my ‘finds’. This is the first time I’ve ever bought a ‘job lot’ and it certainly makes a change from sovereigns, crowns and silver stacking.
(I'm wearing the gloves as some of these coins are a little grubby.)

Here is a nice offering from the Perth Mint. It is a 1oz silver proof. Not sure if any UK dealer will have one in stock. But it is available from LPM in HK.

Royal Mint Plush Blue Velvet Box 2000   Following the worldwide slump in the price of velvet seen in the early 1990s, the Royal Mint - a company known for its attempted Brer Hunt-like cornering of the market in OTC Velvet futures - happened upon the idea of encouraging the purchase of velvet-coated boxes by including complimentary silver coins.   The first stage of what was to become known as The Velvet Revolution was the release of the lesser known "96 Burgundy", a stunning cuboid with a crushed velvet covering which included the seven free silver proof 1996 UK definitive coins from 1p to £1.   The millennium brought the second and, ultimately, final thrust to ramp up the market in the shape of the "2000 Navy". Accompanying this parallelepiped was another freebie, the eight definitive silver proofs from 1p to £2, plus the commemorative ag £5 and a silver proof quadrant set of the four Maundy coins - penny, tuppence, thrupenny bit and groat.   Although stage 1 had seen some success in ensuring a bullish velvet market - even today the 2000 Navy box sells for about three times the price of the 96 Burgundy - the market peaked a short time later, leaving many investors stranded, left high and dry astride yet another tulip bubble.   Today 99% of the world velvet output  is used in the production of handcuffs and in the marginally smaller, albeit considerably more lucrative, market for coronation crowns.    The production of velvet boxes, sadly, ceased in 2019. The last known example, a genuine miniature masterpiece, is believed to have been created to house the testicle(s) of Alexander de Pfeiffel Johnson. They were presented to Carrie Johnson upon the occasion of her self-appointment as British PM.

I am at the stage where I do not really care what it looks like. I just hope it is reasonably priced with a good mintage. It will be graded and held for a long time and when the time comes it may help me buy some food when I have retired.

Skyfiller reacted to LawrenceChard in Ghosting on Gold Sovereigns and Other Coins
I often notice "ghosting" on coins.
I tend to see it most on gold sovereigns, particularly George V and Edward VII, but it can and does occur occur on many other coins. Pennies of the same two monarchs also often show ghosting, but what it it?
A "ghost" image is where a faint or hazy part of a coin's design is reproduced elsewhere on the coin. The ghost image I see most frequently is a soft outline of the head or portrait of George V can be seen in mirror image on the reverse. This is mainly on the earlier "large head" coins from 1911 to 1928 inclusive.
Recently, I came across a remarkable-looking sovereign, a 1922-P Perth Mint example, which also had strong ghosting of the head on the obverse side, as well as on the reverse. I almost had to reach for some eye drops when I saw it.
    Here are some photos:

Here, you can see a "halo" effect surrounding the portrait, and roughly following its contours. I have seen similar effects before, but on this coin it is far more pronounced. The halo area appears to be slightly concave, and I am still  trying to understand what process or events caused it. The concave parts extend to the circle occupied by the lettering, where the field flattens back to normal.

Here Doug has drawn a line showing where to look for the ghosting.

On the reverse, you can see a large depression corresponding with the portrait on the obverse, mirrored of course.
This effect is caused be the fact that the volume of metal displaced by the portrait is greater than that of the reverse design. This had been a constant problem, even back to the old head coinage of Queen Victoria from 1893 to 1901 inclusive.
There were some experiments with changes to the portrait on minor coins, from about 1922, until a smaller head portrait was adopted in 1929, which appears to have solved the problem.

This side by side image helps to demonstrate the effect

This 2x2 composite image, with drawn outlines further demonstrates it.
    Just for good measure:

    Another interesting feature:
A sub-surface air bubble on the obverse. I have explained air bubbles elsewhere.
This old page http://24carat.co.uk/frame.php?url=1926modifiedpenny.html is about 1926 "Modified Effigy" pennies, which are scarce, and the same portrait was used in 1927. It also mentions ghosting.
Some collectors worry about various effects seen on coins, particularly because of counterfeits, and I hope this post provides some help and interest to all collectors, new and old.

I have 3 sovereigns on back order from Chards. I bought them at a price I was very happy with. It very clearly stated they were not in stock and there was no estimated delivery date. I was happy with the contract and parted with my money. I have been informed 1 is now in stock and given an estimated date for the other 2.
I don’t get what all the fuss is about?
The contract is clear and they have been very good with their communication.
In fact I’m really confused. If you don’t like the terms of the sale just don’t click the buy button! 😳
what other company gives you first dibs on a coin or grade of coin via internet, and let’s you pay for it there and then at that days price whilst not knowing what it may cost them. That’s a hell of a service for me as a stacker.
