Royal Mint Gillick Set

I have never been impressed with the RM as it is today, but it’s offerings such as this which are particularly….foul.

A few Sovs at EF which could be bought elsewhere at a few percent over spot plus a box makes them circa 2.5k overpriced.

I suspect some punters will be impressed with “extremely fine” but they will take a bath if they come to sell them.

Disgraceful.

I suspect many members could put together a 'similar quality' set at a fraction of the price. Expensive box eh?

  • A rare opportunity to own every bullion Sovereign featuring Mary Gillick’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II from each year of issue between 1957 and 1968

Cough...

Cashing in for Christmas?

Given that Gillicks were never circulated as currency, I think the majority of them should still be EF at least, if not About Uncirculated.  I don't think I've ever seen a Gillick come up here that wasn't.

The Sovereign is the quintessentially British coin.  It has a German queen on the front, an Italian waiter on the back, and half of them were made in Australia.

Quite, and the problem I have with it is that pretty much anyone could build the same set very quickly at EF, but the RM sell it as a premium product.  In my view it is not.

Actually, in the absence of Sir @LawrenceChard, allow me to put on the Pedant's hat.

If I could buy every bullion sovereign featuring Mary Gillick's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II from each year of issue between 1957 and 1968 for £6495, I would. That'll be millions of the buggers!

Anyone fancy challenging the mint over this offer?

I shall have to think about that for a moment...it could be rather too pedantic, even for our forum's own @LawrenceChard! :)

OK...I have thought about it enough in that split-second - it's definitely not! 🤣

When is our favourite budgie-smuggling skier due back? I would like to ask him about his company's page (article/guide) saying that dealers pay The Royal Mint 3% of spot for gold bullion coins. I am willing to offer him a lot more, so easy profit for him and a great deal for me!!! :D

The Yorkshire bit in me screamed "'ow bluddy much!"

If they sell these it proves, not that we need proof, that morons and their money are easily separated.

Maybe somebody at t'Mint has calculated the stupidity level of the average punter and deemed this a sure fire way to get a Christmas bonus from boss!

I have literally, just completed a full Gillick set (10), having bought all of them from TSF members in the last 14 days. Six in hand, and four to be posted after the RM strike is over. Cost? Under £3800…Quality..make your own judgement.

This beautiful set sold a couple of times a over the last few weeks 😅

Unforetuantly it's probably old timers who don't know any better.

But I'd still say its better than some of the utter c**p selling out at Westminster collection or once in a lifetime, super low mintage proof isles coins I've been called about. Not miles better, but at least these are gold.

The RM don't stop punting stuff out do they. I agree with way over priced like much of their stuff. The mintages on the new Sovs also just makes no sense apart from making as much as they can.

The RM could maintain integrity by selling volume (quality) rather than confected sets.

But they don’t.

Quantity via variations?

Perhaps they are and perhaps they are getting it right... The British Monarchs collection is a great high premium idea, though still balancing it with mintages

I am feeling really guilty now, always recommending 'Gillick' Sovereigns on TSF. So own up! - Who told the RM that 'real' gold sovereigns were minted in the past and even 'circulated.' I am very angry because this was supposed to be our little secret!  Now they've jumped on the band-wagon to make a killing: not withstanding the inconvenience someone has caused the RM to 'buy-back' 500 bullion Sovereigns from somewhere. No wonder the're expensive!.......😁
