The camera will automatically calibrate its colour balance based on what it sees in the background.  In order to do this, it's making a sort of intelligent guess about the lighting.  For a typical photo scene it normally gets this right, but for things like macro photography of a coin, it's easily confused, particularly when the coin is filling most of the shot.

You can fix this by getting a grey card (this is what it's called), which is a calibrated neutral grey colour.  You can buy one for a few quid off Amazon.

Put this in the camera's field of view, and the camera will calibrate on it.  Somewhere there will be a control to lock the white balance, possibly hidden in a menu somewhere.  Lock the white balance while pointing at the grey card, and you should get a sensible white balance that renders the gold colour of the coin correctly.

It can get expensive! Would this work and which of the four options would be best to buy?

  3. I have a space that is 24" wide by 20" deep (shut it @HerefordBullyun, I know what you are thinking) and would like to create a photo booth that will give me more room to take pics than the portable LED lit one that I currently use.

What is the best way to go about it in terms of lighting, material to use, coating for non-reflection.

What is the best way to set it up? I was thinking of the LED strip lights you can buy. Would this work and how much lighting would i need and at what position? Is more better? Would lighting from in front make the reflection off a proof better or worse?

And anything else that could make a difference on this topic...

  4. What is the affect of different coloured backgrounds on how gold and silver appear in photos?

Sometimes a coin/bar looks great, sometimes it looks sh*t.

    What are colours to avoid?

Does where a colour is on the spectrum define its affect on the subject matter? Is it graded from white through to black on its level of impact?

And any other things that might help with this topic...

  5. 2014 Andorra 4x 1oz .999 Silver Atlas of Wildlife – Europe

£350 incl SD postage (I have also put this set up for sale on other platforms)

This set is quite stunningly presented with the fake book box, map, CoA's and CoA holder and original outer box, all in pristine condition.

This set was rocking horse terrible, impossible to find anywhere, I hadn't seen any for sale until two sets appeared on eBay recently, I guess once they are gone it will be very hard to find a set. There were a maximum of 1,000 of these sets produced, I have seen some of the coins sold individually so some have been split.

The intended large collection started, and finished, with the set featuring European animals when the initial aim was to produce six sets featuring animals from across the world - Europe, North America, South America, Australia, Africa and Asia - with antique finish, superb quality minting and a stylized book-shaped box

Presented in a luxury box, the “Atlas of Wildlife: Europe” consists of four coins in total – Wild Boar, Perch, Pond Turtle and Wood Grouse
