I believe 2000 was the first time the current coppery, mushy bullion Sov was minted.  If my memory serves me correctly the last bullion issue before that was 1982 - can anyone correct me?

The first two sovereigns I owned were both 2019, which were gifted to me by my mother (early inheritance). They were ok to look at, and I was aware of the value, but I could not find any real beauty in them.
It was only when I decided to convert my savings into gold, that I started looking more seriously. A set of twelve sovereigns in a boxed collection caught my eye, being sold by this guy in Blackpool with a fishy sounding name 😉. It consisted of 4 Victoria, 4 Edward VII and 4 George V sovereigns, with an example of each from London, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth mints for each Monarch.
When I received them a few days later and began to look closely, I was immediately struck by the intricate detail of the engravings and subtle differences in designs of different years. Those two 2019 coins barely registered in comparison.
The Gillicks have their own charm, and as much younger coins, are less prone to the knicks and dents that the older sovereigns have, but that is what also gives the older ones their uniqueness.
As a relative newcomer myself, I would suggest starting with the later Victoria and George V. They are relatively easy to find, easier to sell and don't command high premiums. Once you have got the bug and learnt a bit about what makes individual sovereigns more valuable than others, then start looking but be patient.

And did you measure? Pictures please if you are able. Counterfeit?
A bit of a puzzle, that.

It's a real conundrum for those with the 1/4s isn't it? A strange release in a sense, but I do love it. I got the bullion and am absolutely delighted with it
If I didn't have one this would definitely be the one I didn't get but wanted, I can't think of any others (as a modern coin collector). Luckily I haven't seen the proof in hand or that would probably be the one!

My experience with beautiful proof Britannia gold coins, boxed sets and very low mintages is that I paid a premium say 20% over spot when I purchased and ended up selling at 97% of spot. I didn't loose money because spot had risen by the premium and a bit more but I was very disappointed that the premium was completely lost. I tried to sell to coin dealers that were advertising the same coins at very high premiums and was being offered proofs at 5% to buy over spot at the time. I couldn't find buyers here either at spot price so in frustration I handed over to HGM just to get rid of them. I kept the empty boxes though as it didn't make any difference to the price but at least the dealers didn't have the box and certificate to double their asking price when reselling. Moral - don't pay too much extra for a proof if you think it will retain its value.

£675 for two? And they have a bullion side and a proof (like - ?) side like the 2014s and 15s @GoldDiggerDave mentioned?
    That sounds like a steal
Anyone know how these get graded? Is it a mule?

What is the play here? By the TPTB and their stooge politicians. The current Fiat banking system, does appear to be on its last legs? New systems are being orchestrated in the background. Would appreciate feedback, wise heads on here. What are your thoughts?
the manipulation of our stacks by invisible hands is frustrating!!!

13 coins and a couple of bars is 13 coins and a couple of bars more than most of the people of the world have (and some can only dream of)
Definitely avoid vintage/expensive numismatic stuff till you've built up your knowledge. I started with BBP too till I found this place (when low-tax silver from Europe still existed, but BBP are still too expensive for me - I think they have a 'sister' business that sells the exact same stuff cheaper - ?).
Good wishes, and oh yes you'll have fun!!!

    How do all

    Quick hello from me.

Ive recently started 'stacking' silver.  Well I say stacking in inverted brackets because I only have 13 coins and a couple of bars so far but anyway, I can see this is going get expensive so Im here to learn.
Im in my 50s, realistically is this too late to start ?  I understand that as an investment silver wont yield the same results as stocks etc but as long as I break even ( eventually) then it seem like it might be fun along the way. Also a small nest egg for the fam maybe if I croak it?!
So where will I find info on the best places to buy ? Im suppose I'm more interested in standard coins and bars rather than vintage stuff as at the moment the risk is too great not knowing anything about that side of things.
Ive bought all my stuff so far from the Royal Mint and a couple of coins from bullion by post !

Anyway, here to learn. Thank you

    welcome and hello,
never too old to start a love affair with the shiny stuff mate... ive been doing it since last year and in my mid 50's... everyone on here can give you advice on various ways to go from old stuff to new shiny stuff and pros and cons over silver and gold, its just a case of finding your feet and deciding your path which may change as your knowledge builds, i mainly do the new very shiny silver, (both bullion and collectables) it all depends on what i see or like tbh and yeah it can get pricey but at the end of the day you are buying precious metals which will keep value and grow hopefully over time... i may delve into gold more at the end of this year or early next year as my treasure chest fills up with silver...  look for good deals... on here is a good place to start too. all deals built on trust and good prices to be had

Good review and I'll take a look at your channel
I will say that imo these lovely little bars make 'more sense' (and are much more alluring!) when you have two or three to jangle together in your hand. They are really tactile and a pleasure to play with. So, if it's your first year and you could only get one, make sure you get subsequent years (or perhaps make an offer to the owner of your bar's number from previous years)! There are also discounts for membership levels and some postage discount on multiples, which all helps.
Silver's really shot up since last year and I couldn't afford all my last year's bars. I was very pleased that when I put some of last year's up for sale at this year's prices they not only sold out within an hour, I was swamped with people wanting to buy them!
