Isn't hindsight a funny thing.

Wouldn't it have been nice to have a crystal ball back in 2012 to look into the future when this auction happened in my local area

No takers for a 1989 proof sovereign at £200

or an 1817 sovereign for £320  or a 1817 half for a ton

Do you know what date in 2012?😎

Gold was £1078.23 on 1st November 2012.

That would make the intrinsic value of a sovereign £254.77

OK 1st June 2012 £1026.63 would make a sovereign = £241.63

1st July 2012 £1021.50 would make a sovereign = £240.41

I guess there may have been buyers' premium, which might account for some prices or lack of bids.

Bit of an unfortunate typo on that listing, they put it down as a 1898 sovereign 😀

I'm pretty sure it is in the past 4 years where the prices have gone up sharply.

As an example for the 1989 proof sovereign I've seen a few youtube videos from back then and they were pricing it as £900 and nowadays you can easily pay double that.

In 1990 you could get them below issue price, it was not a popular design at the time at all.

Makes you wonder where some of the unpopular designs of today will be in 20 years

What were the prices when you were a lad in 1864 @LawrenceChard?

89 of course!

89 groats, someone took you to the cleaners if you swapped a sovereign for that in 1864! 😁

I wondered where all these groats I had came from!

If the swap was minty for minty, you are better off with the groats!

Although no groats were issued in 1864, the nearest I can find is 1854:

You might have to settle for a Maundy fourpence, and th nearest I can get is 1865:

I am sure we have lots of 1864 gold sovereigns in stock:

What would be a fair price to pay for a raw 1957 Sovereign today?

fair:  scrap price only

Fine: 5% premium

VF:  20% premium...

😎

For clarification, the above was not intended as price / value advice, just the usual exercise of my humour, after seizing on "fair" price.

I thought the 5oz bars I bought at the Perth Mint in 2006 were expensive at the time….I was very wrong.
