Cast or Minted Gold Bar?

CoinBug

Recommended Posts

It may or may not be the right time with what's going on in the world to buy a 100g gold bar, but if I keep trying to time the market I'll probably never get one so I'm going to dive right in now and spend close to £5000.

Now all I've got to do is make up my mind about which style of bar to go for.

I was just wondering what everyone's opinion on this subject was. Should I go for a poured cast bar or a nice neat looking minted bar?

Please don't suggest I put my money into coins e.g. sovereigns as I have plenty of those already.

I think @CANV hit the nail on the head.

I had a 50g cast and to be honest it was underwhelming so I no that I'd still be disappointed in a hundred gram cast.

Under 250g I'd agree and go for minted, will look and feel much bigger.

Yeah shape wise, but as you know gold is dense so nowhere near that size.

At the higher end of your budget but I doubt you will find a nicer design in a minted bar

Does anyone have a photo* of a 100g cast or minted bar that is to scale with something common, i.e. a £1 coin or a postage stamp?

I think they probably are 'underwhelming' to look at, albeit awesome to hold?

*pre-boating accident, of course.

The minted bars do look big don't they, but I expect they're quite thin?

The cast bars look like thumb knuckle to tip!

100g silver is a nice size, but 100g gold?

I'd prefer a big coin like a 50 pesos or the bigger soles, but the OP has specified he wants a bar.

£2 coin.

Lots of great comments. I am definitely after a bar and have stopped short of going for a 250g bar so it's going to be a 100g bar.

It looks like a minted bar is the more popular choice.

Sharps Pixley is who I was thinking of buying the bar from as I have done business with them before and I can get next day delivery unlike other dealers who are quoting longer delivery times. Also, they have the 100g bar in both cast or minted.

For the extra £80 I'd go with the pamp ( you have to look at it for a few years)

Tavex I've used recently and they delivered next day, their presentation is second to none and they have an online chat option available and are very responsive.

It is always difficult to time the market.  I would maybe go for a few 1oz bars spread out over the next few months, for a pound cost averaging affect.

That way you can also pick a Pamp, Una and the Lion, etc., bars or whatever takes your fancy.

My time-tested advice is to buy at the lowest premium within reason.

had you not said not to suggest it!

It’s better to go for 1oz coins rather than 1oz minted bars.

But having said that, if you’re just looking to buy gold close to spot then buy what’s available.

With regards to bars, I prefer cast bars such as the 1oz and 100g TSF silver bars that @BackyardBullion makes each year. I appreciate that this post is regarding gold but I’d still rather have a cast gold or silver bar over a minted bar.

If it's purely for a bullion investment then I'd advise to buy 5k worth of 2022 bullion sovereigns as these are likely to fetch a premium and will be very easy to liquidate.

I know you said bars but 100g gold bar is underwhelming in size, I think we dream its a 14.5kg bar like the one on the back of the bus in the Italian Job.

If it's a case of just wanting a bar for the stack then just go for the nicest one you like.
