Seasider got a reaction from GoodAsGold in 1989 5sovereign or 4coin set
As people have said you can't guarantee getting a 70 grade if you do that.  Someone had a 4 coin set for sale on here earlier this year.  They had had it graded and only one of the four coins came back as a 70 (the others including the £5 were 69s.
So if you must have a 70 get one that has already been graded.  You could try putting a wanted ad in the Trade section on here and see who bites.
You have picked one of the more expensive coins to want.  For this year of 1989 the desirable coins are the £5 and the sovereign.  Have you thought about the £2 version - halfway between the £5 and the Sovereign but for 1989s you can pick them up for about the same as or perhaps even less than the price of a sovereign.

    Just don't use a 1989 £5 for that.  Pleeeease.

Which is precisely why Third Party grading like NGC and PCGS came along in the first place.  To give consistency, remove the subjective nature of dealer's grading and protect the consumer from getting "done".  That's the theory anyway.

That is not a problem with grading it is human nature - to want the "best".  Combine that with an auction like the Coin Cabinet and suddenly you see a big differential.
But think about the Three Graces coin which was issued exclusively as PF70.  Is that expensive because of the grade?  Or is it expensive because it is riding on the coat tails of the RM Three Graces?  I would suggest that that is a case where grading may be irrelevant because none of the coins is any better than any other.

Yeah agree... I wonder what a PF69 would have commanded as a premium 🙂

Without wishing to stir anything up we are in the Gold forum.
Which prompts me to ask does anyone's favourite change according to the metal?  Do some designs look better in gold than in silver or platinum?

Interesting combination.  I only have the 2017 Britannia in Platinum and it's not my favourite design but the metal seems a bit flat like a sort of Matte silver
With the 2017 there are more lines in the background on the platinum one than the silver.  I am not sure if there are design differences for any other years  between the metals.  Okay I know there is 1999 but I was thinking of years where the design is basically the same just tweaked a bit.

The next Coin Cabinet auction has a Douro Treasure 1864 Sovereign (lot 106).  It will be interesting to see how its price compares to the other 1864s in the same sale.

This comes from the HMRC manual (CG78305)

    "Foreign currency
Currency may take the form of notes, coins or travellers cheques.
You may need to determine the location of currency if you are dealing with an individual charged on the remittance basis, see CG25300+. There is no rule in TCGA92/S275 specifically governing the location of currency. You should apply the rule in Section 275 (b) for tangible moveable property.
Coins are to be regarded as currency only if they are legal tender at the time of their acquisition or disposal. Coins which are currency but not sterling, for example Krugerrands, are chargeable assets.
Sovereigns minted in 1837 and later years and Britannia gold coins are currency but, like all sterling currency, are exempt because of TCGA92/S21 (1)(b).
Coins (including pre- 1837 sovereigns) which are not legal tender are not currency. They are chattels and qualify for the chattels exemption in TCGA92/S262. A gain on such a coin is therefore exempt if the disposal consideration does not exceed the limit in CG76573. You should bear in mind the possibility that the disposal of more than one coin may constitute the disposal of a `set’, see CG76631+.
The chattels exemption does not apply to coins which are non-sterling currency, TCGA92/S262 (6)(b)."
and then a bit from CG76573
"There is no chargeable gain on the disposal of a single chattel (tangible moveable property) if the gross consideration does not exceed £6,000.
Where the consideration exceeds £6,000 the chargeable gain may be restricted, see CG76577."

    2018 Fabulous F15 Roos
The RAM silver roos are minted in both proof and "frosted" (BU) editions. The design is changed every year, some designs favouring the proof, some the frostie. 2018 was a year in which the proof coin was the clear winner, earning a "Fabulous 15" rating and privy.

Similar to me - he had 20 when I first looked and then when I came back they had all gone.  And it was a Sunday too - I thought that was supposed to be a day of rest.
