Best/Favourite Britannia Design

Heirlooms

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

While it seems the 2014 is widely been chosen as the best Britannia design thought I'd ask the question to see if this generally is the consensus or if there's other designs people like.

So which is the best or your favourite (as these could be different)? Any design is fair game even the classic standard one. Here's a link to all so far to jog your memory:

Good question!

My favourite design is probably the 2014, but I have an aversion to all things .999 so I'll choose 1997 instead.

To be honest they are all good and, in my mind, highly collectable.

As an avid Britannia collector, my gold collection is largely made up of 1/4 oz Britannia proofs, it’s hard to pick a favourite. In fact, the different designs compliment each other nicely.

I do have a fondness for the largely ignored 2013 design and I think 2020 will become a firm favourite.

I like the 2021 with Oriental border, and the Boudicca version. But really they're all quite nice. And before the sharp increase in silver I had been tempted to rebuild my old Britannia collection, wherein I had been collecting one of each design before I'd sold off the entire stack.

I would say the 2003 but they put a load of lettering over the picture which spoils it a tad, but I'd think the 2015 would edge it for me.

If I were the head of the royal mint I'm not sure I'd of approved 2008 or 2017 for release, she looks a bit like she has been subjected to a cloning experiment gone wrong.

I agree the 2008 is a bit cartoonish, but that was thought of the 2005 sovereign at release too and now it's very popular.

The 2017 is marmite. I like it, I have a few and it was a good attempt by a young man learning his trade. I get it that others disagree.

The 2015 is a good design. It's probably the cleanest attempt at portraying Britannia in person.

Wow, the only one that has been mentioned twice has been the 2015 which is a surprise. Seems most designs are well liked. I'd go with the 2001 myself but I must say the RM have got these designs right more often than they've got it wrong. Also like the 2005, if only I could find the BU version, they are so hard to find 😩

My favorite Britannia designs are the 5 by Philip Nathan. All with the crenellated border designs. The 3 classic designs (Standing (1987), Charioteer (1997) & Seated (2005)) are faithfully traditional, while the Britannia with the lion (2001) and helmeted Britannia (2003) are fresh and modern representations.
