What no bean tins? Two birds, one stone. That way you can keep all your valuables together, gold and beans.

Nowadays the older sovereigns would be considered high relief by todays standards. Modern coins hardly have any depth to them. Quite a shame.

Actually, all modern coins are much much flat comparing with Victoria's era.  The low relief designs, maybe down to costs, made modern coins not good for appreciation purpose.

Anyone tempted to buy a memorial sovereign and use it as a pocket piece for approx 20 years and then submit it for grading? See if it could grade F, then sell it on eBay as rare? It'd be the only one in the population, so automatically rarer than the PF70s. There'd be some satisfaction in owning the worst graded memorial sovereign as well.

Totally agree especially those reasons related to the number of launch in past few years and PF70 coins.   I have no plan to sell in near future, and hope can pass to next generation to have a small sum of profits.  Also, i skip the purchase of Coronation sovereign at launch, as I don't think the increase in price is reasonable, which was already very high before the adjustment.

Premise; i myself bought the Jubilee, Memorial and Coronation proof, along with the Sotd Coronation sovereign, and the 5 coins coronation set. I am a collector and i will not miss anything i like, as long as i can afford (and to be honest i reached my limit, like many others in the last couple years).
As a collector i buy with the clear intention not to re sell in a (near) future, nor i bother checking if a specific coin appreciates or doesn’t. Once is in the collection is in the collection.
But since the Memorial emission, and after all the comments i read here on the forum, i confess i started checking how these late sovereigns were performing on auctions, on dealers’ webistes etc etc etc.
Straight to the point; Memorial was just a wrong idea. It was something that was “forced” and screwed completely this delicate equilibrium; can you all imagine a world without the Memorial emission?
    Jubilee 2022
Coronation 2023 (with all sets, Sotd etc)
    St George 2024.
    Easy.
Now squeeze Memorial into that, and voilà, disaster. And i honestly dont understand when i read comments like “it will perform in the future, just hold and see etc etc”. No it will not. Where is the problem in admitting it is a failure of a coin, and up to now it has just been an economic loss? We cant predict future, but we can analyze past and present. The market is SATURATED by this coin. (i also dont personally like the adjusted version of the Coats of Army, but thats another story)
First big problem; there are thousands of PF70s. And thousands more will come as people will keep sending them to NGC or PCGS. Total population (considering also sets) is around 20k. Ok RM QC issues, but we are still talking about thousands and thousands of PF70 coins. What creates price is scarcity, and the Memorial will never be a scarce coin to find in highest grade (as well as Jubilee and Coronation for sure but, as said, its been the memorial that created this coin jam…)
Second big problem; people are just getting mad with this slab mania. Certification is not really something profitable (i mean, it is profitable indeed for those who make the slab) when applied to modern coins. One thing is (just to give an idea) having a Ms64 18whatever year sovereign. Another thing is holding a PF70 2020 or 2022 sovereign with other thousand people. On this forum, as in other fora i visit, people buy a coin and send it to slab even before receiving it! Or they receive it and check every single millimeter to find the smallest imperfection and then claim a substitution…. The collector in me cries…what about enjoying the coin first??
Too many coins, too many top pop slabs. How can you honestly think prices stay up?

The releases of the Jubilee series, the Memorial series and the Coronation series have hit collectors hard in our pockets as we all know. Likewise the cost of living crisis.
I wasn’t too sure about stretching to a third quintuple purchase after the first 2 special releases. In the end, I decided to give the Coronation quintuple a miss, simply basing my decision on the fact that the Jubilee and Memorial special designs appear on the front of my slabs, whereas crowned Charles would only appear on the back.
The 2016 sov with the one-off effigy of the Queen suffered the same fate.

Similarly you can compare the proof versions of, say, 2023 and 1981 St. George and Dragon and the newer one is much plainer and more lacking in details than the old. I guess this is probably because of some "new technology" RM now uses to "improve" accuracy. Hmmmm

i don't think this plating, or whatever it is, has affected the definition. If you look around you can find these cast copies of minting medallions. Some people make silver objects using lost-wax casting. A copy mould is made and then wax reproductions poured. This was repro is then put in a sand mould with sprues which is a treelike structure of wax that will eventually provide paths for the molten casting material to flow and for air to escape. This is why i asked if the lump at the top of the metal was a sprue. You get a pretty good copy but it isn't the quality of the minted medallion.

Just a bit of fun really, been playing around with my laser engraver, never tried coasters before, so didn't have a clue on design, so I thought I'd have a go at some special year sovereigns for a start.
Wanted to make them look they had been pressed into the coaster surface, rather then a perfect picture. Little bit of a clean up with the sander, and some sort of finish on top and I think they will look alright 😁

I bought one in 1/4 oz gold. I was a dragon year baby (I think dragons were still around back then).  I like the design and have a couple other years for family members.
They are usually not big sellers outside of the Asian community but it’s a fun addition to my collection.

I have a bunch of the '50 years of the fifty pence' BU coins without the privy mark (4 with and 4 without)- in this case a Spirograph type privy that should be next to the 50.
Initially i thought i had picked up a rare profit making opportunity, but i wouldn't be surprised if this was a common mistake for the RM 😐
For this to happen (on the fifty pence) they must have separate dies, some with the privy and some without. Makes you wonder why they would produce dies without it when it is part of the design. The two pound coin i can understand because it's a standard obverse but the fifty pence has 'new pence' substituted for 'fifty pence' and is unique to this coin.
