For me obsession... I always start collecting something, at least with shiny stuff the value is unlikely to dive and make me a massive loss in the long run!

I read this quote back in the mid 2000s and it really resonated with me, since i had some issues with debt in my early 20s and never looked back since

“Gold is the money of kings, silver is the money of gentlemen, barter is the money of peasants – but debt is the money of slaves.”

I've always been a collector of stuff like many small kids are, postcards on holidays and key rings from interesting places i've been but after a bad motorcycle accident and a house fire my priorities changed. I became free and loose with wine women n song and this is where precious metals stopped a downward spiral into marriage and children. I saved some old UK 5p pieces the old one bob (very like 5Dm coins of the time) and on  trips to west Germany i bought several porn mags from the vending machines at motorway services. Good times were had drinking in Germany and the mags helped pay for the trips. On a later trip to Berlin after the wall i was walking around a flee market and spotted some old reich marks and some Bismark metals going very cheap so i bought them and quickly sold them on too. Unfortunatly the old coins buy turned into getting any coins gold or silver from home or abroad to turn a profit. A pocket full did make for some very good holidays in europe. The lads holidays away stopped but the coins have remained.
A few years ago i made the biggest mistake / regret of my collecting life i sold nearly all of my collection and bought some gold. I have since rebought most of it
Today i'm a collector of mainly silver and more recently gold. I still buy any old / new coin i like but now i keep most of it, I'll trade with a small group of friends into metals to get what i like.
I do like the Perth Mint products with their three lunar series, kooks and wedge-tailed eagles favorites. Annual typeset collections of these and other coins keep me away from the pub like the old days but i still go to music gigs in europe and bring back some gold bullion hidden in my wallet. I never go anywhere without some empty filps in there too.

    Hi All
I have seen a number of people here and elsewhere thinking of giving up with silver.
Firstly, I am not any sort of expert or guru.  I just have had a good think about silver.
I have a not inconsiderable stack of silver, collected over the last five or so years.  My stack is varied and ranges from English Hammered through to QB’s.
Personally, I have stopped stacking silver, and have shifted focus on to buying non proof interesting coins - like Morgan’s, George Shillings etc.  Coins that I enjoy owning.
Will I be selling my silver stack - no!  Not at all.
For me, it a long term bet and I want to keep the coins that I have collected.
Everyone has their own ideas and strategies but for me, I will be keeping my silver stack and selectively adding interesting coins rather than bulk purchases.
If I was starting again, I would still buy silver but from private buyers on the forum.
Would be interested in hearing other folks thoughts.
    Best

I have a lovely fake pre47 Half Crown, so easy to tell it's fake but sometimes they fall into the bag on batch deals, with something worth so little people don't check as vigorously
Totally right on dealers giving you a raw deal, just because the costs are more for the smelting, but easy to achieve spot on the forum or a premium on Ebay (especially individual listings or smaller batches).

The smaller coins tend to only be worth spot unless a real special date, might be worth getting a book for reference ease, I have Spink's "Coins of England & The United kingdom". Larger coins it is all down to condition (relatively no clue) and production numbers, which is why i tend to buy at weight rather than looking for individual years, really down to whether you are stacking or collecting.
All that said, i will be buying an Elizabethan shilling this year

There is always the option to use a reputable member like BYB as a go between, where the extra cost is a small fee to the member and having to pay postage twice. This method will mean that you won't have to sell in small batches. This will be a lot less than you are losing via Ebay and will avoid those charge back scammers that are prevalent on Ebay.
Stefan is right in saying that members are less likely to drop large amounts on silver from a new seller.

That pre 1947 stuff is nice as you can buy loads and feel like you're getting value for money, 😁. But the new shiny stuff looks nice and they are always calling my name out, 😀 especially the ones from the perth mint. Been meaning to get a kilo silver bar but haven't managed to yet, I just want to feel a hefty bar in my hands. But im just trying to keep a narrow focus as theres too many temptations.
I feel nothing is at a decent price no more 😭.
My proudest moment so far is that I found a new hobby and can fulfil my lust of buying things that hopefully wont depreciate in the long run, lol. Like where tf have I been living? feels like under a rock!

I think everyone will agree that the future price of any precious metal is unknown and is just guess work, i think that average cost will only really matter if you plan on selling in the next couple of years. My stack will be for when i retire and that's off far in the distance, so my average is likely to be less than the price in 15 yrs plus so that does the job for me, also worth thinking that as the years go on, more coins will be lost from each year, so what you buy common now will might be irregular or maybe close to rare in the future
I think if i were to start stacking now, i would go for old UK silver like Half Crowns and the like, a lot easier to get close to that £20 mark at the moment, won't spot and the designs are stunning  tbh that's what i buy now except for a few to continue my yearly sets.

As a seasoned stacker I agree with your comment that silver is in a bubble and the price is manipulated but in my world the price of silver is marked down and not high so once the bubble bursts silver should rise in price not fall. Gold on the other hand has had a good run of late and people panicked into gold believing the end of the world was imminent - think about the doomsday folks saying leaving the EU would sink the ship - so maybe gold is due a correction downwards.
Problem is nobody knows and regardless of "expert" advice the jury is out.
