Worth working out the cost and ease of selling. A few gold sovereigns are very easy to sell as well as being VAT and CG exempt on purchase. Potentially there could be quite a lot of effort and expense selling numerous 1oz silver coins to the same value. If the silver 1oz coins are bought new with VAT included it can reduce the potential profit even if silver has risen at the Spot price.

Well, today both Coin Cabinet and Coins of the Realm have auctions. Over 500 items between them both ranging from plain edge gold gothics and jubilee gold 50p sets to quarter sovereigns and silver sets.
Most would have been available at direct from the mint for Mint Marque customers without any concerns but for the general collector the auction is the only opportunity.
Looking at the prices, it’s not a surprise that Paul is bang on (as he usually is!). If you wanted the 2022 Jubilee gold 50p set from the Mint you would have to be a Mint Marque customer and pay £2,305. Currently it’s available to anyone for £1,800.00 at Coin Cabinet. Interesting, right?!
Also, a 70 graded Gold Gothic is still in reasonable territory and you don’t have, as Paul said, the issue of QC and then the wait to grade. Who knew!!
Anyone else cancelling their Mint Marques and going in for auctions only. I’ve always had a balance of the two but now wonder if it’s worth it at all. I am probably going to remain in for a short while longer to see whether they look to change things up a bit, or not.
I will probably just depart modern coins and instead stick to collecting old bullion and hoping for scare/rare items that will grade well. Far more interesting as you learn about the grading process and also discover new things - history, politics, even geography! Do you get that by buying a James Bond coin??

I did the same as the amount of milk spots, hazing and rapid tarnishing on newer Royal Mint silver proofs is too much of a risk. Older silver coins including proofs are fine as they have generally settled down and unlikely to change further beyond gradual toning.

Agreed the quality control seems lacking and generally do not buy direct due to higher price and quality. For newer proofs I tend to buy graded to avoid issues and anything else from here and other places with a good reputation.

    Cameo or Ultra Cameo?

I agree with you to a certain extent, I keep my Silver coins raw in a cabinet so I can occasionally pick them up and view them up close however,  I think grading the older Proof coins is prudent, so as not to have an accident and potentially cause damage.
The lighting on the shiny photographs was just the January daylight.  The photos showing off the Cameo on the coin was under a table lamp and the body of my iPhone shadowing the coin.

I am concerned about crypto for many reasons.  Mainly because I don't understand it.  Also, what happens if you can't get online because there's no power or you don't have an internet connection or you forget your password or any other number of reasons?
For me, crypto is a big no.  For others who know more about it I'm sure they are comfortable with their position.  Each to their own.

The 2016 proof, certainly in the 70 grade, is a couple of hundred pounds more than the 2022. I'm not sure what the raw in box version is valued at.

    Hi Everyone
Thank you all for the lovely things you have said about our team at Bleyer and kind words of support, even from Lawrence at Chards.
Things are very difficult at the moment for everyone. People have been set against one another and bent a bit out of shape - whether about Brexit, Covid, Ukraine or something else.
We recognise this and try to combat it by showing compassion, rather than getting angry as that doesn't help anyone.
I think it helps to think of us as all being on the same team.
I hope you all have a wonderful day, I have a bit of Devon sunshine here to put a smile on my face as well as knowing that many of you have our backs.
    Thank you again.

Chorlton reacted to LawrenceChard in Marsh Scarcity Rating - How Accurate?
I don't have a great memory for dates, numbers, facts, or anything else which needs memorising. I am better at understanding things, and can remember events which follow a logical sequence or chain of events. Our detailed stock records don't go back so far either.
I do seem to recall photographing 2 of the 827 sovereigns, but don't think we have ever owned any, unlike Ansells, of which we have owned a number, perhaps 4. I think we may have bought another one a few days ago.
Some of the Marsh rarity ratings are based on higher grade coins, and downplay lower grades. 1899-P are not rare in low grades, but higher grades are scarcer.
I remember a TSF discussion about some of the "C" rarities being changed, but don't remember why.
Sorry if this doesn't help much.
    🙂

First image appears to be a fake. Fonts are wrong - flat tops to the D & C + plus inconsistent wear. Looks like a few deliberate dints in the neck area to age it, in an otherwise clean image. However image three is genuine IMO. Just examined 15 shield-backs to get a sense of normality. There are 5 varieties of the 1845 mostly R+ Unfortunately I don't have any of them!
